Why are people still talking about this? Imo this season and last season were the best seasons we had in a while. I enjoyed so much anime.

Do you think anime is declining? Why not and why yes?

No. It's stagnant. Most of what we have is up to par and good but has the medium progressed at all? Not really.

Depends on what you mean by declining. More are being made today than ever. The question is whether the shit to quality ratio is higher and if the medium is pushing creative boundaries. I'm gonna guess yes and not really, respectively.

This is just a matter of perception. Anime becomes stagnant to you when you've watched enough of it for it to lose its novelty. There's actually about twice as many highly-rated shows per season (>8) than there were at the start of the decade.

As said above, it's not declining, just stagnant. We don't get the same amount of avant-garde/revolutionary works as in the past nor very remarkable efforts in plot nor animation, but then, that's only natural to any medium that becomes popularized. There's still quite a few great anime coming out every year.

Na, I prefer newer anime as well.

People always say anime is on a decline, I've seen it being said since 2010 and people have probably said it even before then, it's the same with music.

I'd say anime is actually on a rise, more people like it now compared to before and more anime is being produced now compared to 2003, obviously the quality varies but with more anime coming out there will be both more bad and good.

Don't worry about being lame now, you were always lame anyway!

Here, I say it: I don't think any great show (outside of Sangatsu No Lion and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu) has aired since Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso (2014).

There are still very good animes nowadays, but I think 2010-2012 was slightly better.

It's the same as in 2017, 2016, 2015 and so on. And it will be the same in 2019 too. Some trends might be shifting, but qualitywise you will always find good anime in each year.

Well, as a person who's now watching seasonal Anime(shocker, I know), I can't say that it's getting any worse than it has in the past decade. So no, it's not really declining.

I've managed to find a decent number of Anime from this season to watch, and I'm definitely enjoying them.

I don't think so. We still get a lot of good shows but i think because of the sheer volume of titles that get released every season, some really good ones may get buried in the mediocrity. Its more of the percentage of good ones thats declining rather than the actual number

I enjoyed this 2018 much more than the previous couple of years thanks to two original anime and it's a rare thing lately.

How do you people even define "improving", "declining", or "staying the same"/"stagnating"?

I mean, other than based on "how much I like the current season".

As time passes, the good ones tend to make their way to the surface, while the mediocre experience some sort of light in the time frame of their airing (more or less) and then slowly fade.
Maybe these hidden gems won't get the massive popularity of others and there will be some stubborn crappy show that still hangs in there, but my opinion is that if an anime truly deserves attention, it will get it.

Well yeah, of course. But i meant it in the sense that people may percieve quality to be declining because of the mediocrity.

Depends. If we're talking about the mass-produced corporate garbage that gets shat out repeatedly each season, whose only purpose is to spend the least and make the most money possible, then yes, heavily.

But when it comes to actual art, passion projects, or anything with actual quality and care put into it, I'd say we're getting stuff that's better than ever.

I think anime is remaining at the status quo. Their are still great modern hits like Steins Gate Zero but still with a majority of anime being just average.

I'd say that trends and tropes in anime are getting worse, more and more detached from human emotion and more rooted in otaku fetishes.

Otherwise the rest of it is subjective...ish.

I personally would like to see older art styles from the 90s and 80s return and replace the moeblob. Less stick-like limbs would also be nice.

Depends on how you see this "decline". Popularity-wise, it's the 2010s that brought anime a higher fanbase than the 90s or the 2000s. But now it's rather quantity over quality, the tropes are disturbingly repetitive, with weak main characters, tsundere love interests, excessive and unnecessary fanservice and slow paced action making for everything that is cancer in anime nowadays.

I’m honestly more tempted to think anime is getting better. The amount of highly scored anime by my friends in Fall 2017 is nothing short of impressive, for example.

I couldn’t credibly claim that any more than I could claim it is declining, however.

By what metric financially anime has been seeing increasing profits every year for quite awhile. Quality well that is going to be subjective depending on who you ask.As for me no I feel anime is of the same quality as it has been since the 80's lots of great shows lots of bad shows. Some amazing animation and some poor.

I have been thinking anime has been getting better and better. The animation quality has more or less improved over time. The only difference is that more and more shows are getting advertised, nothing else. There were as many shitty shows back in the 1980's as they are in the 2010's

Public reach is higher than ever and people have much more 'selection power.'

I am starting to believe this so called ''declining oh nooe~" is all western paranoia, which only has access to limited anime compared to Japan and/or individual paranoia stemming from people who are choosy about what they watch.

Like from an animation standpoint? Not at fucking all, technology is good and it is helping make anime good. But you would be hard pressed to make a full-proof argument that anime as a whole is in decline. There are always good shows to pick out each season to prove the theory wrong in an absolute sense.

A bit. Only in some genres, because there is no innovation. In the shounen world, we see a lot of cliches and echii works, but you can already see some diferent animes, innovating, and that's what we need in the anime world...

Anime is fine. It's entering the mainstream which means we get a lot of clones of whatever sells, but it's not like we don't see new great shows every season. I'd argue that we're making more great shows now then we were even during the 90s Golden Age, but due to the 'seasonal' nature of anime cycling so many shows past us, the high density of good shows, and the way the anime community has developed, we don't really get a lot of conversation/hype going about any single show the way we used to. As a result it can feel like the industry isn't producing anything of gravity.

It used to be that if a great show aired, *everybody* was watching and talking about it, usually long after it aired, and you couldn't be part of the dialogue if you hadn't seen it. Nowadays it's hard to even keep up with all the quality stuff that comes out, and discussion usually drops off pretty hard once the next season with all its offerings comes up. But again, that's more about us than the shows themselves. Honestly I'd say we've gotten a bit spoiled and don't realize how good we have it (endless isekai/high school slice of life clones notwithstanding).
