Although he isn’t a “chosen one” due to the rules of the setting, the girls’ mentor and the one who gave them magic in Magic Knight Rayearth is a male. He really shows just how strong he is in the second season, too. It’s a thing even in the core of the genre. Having the gender ratio skewed more toward males is generally reserved for parody, though. |

| I mean a fair number of magical girl shows have boys who can also use magic, and there's a couple shows with all male cast like the ones already listed. But if you're asking why Mahou Shounen isn't an established genre then the answer is there isn't enough shows that would fit into it and it tends to be used for parody if anything. (Or genderbent cases where the characters are male but turn into magical girls is another common variation). |

| Who will that appeal to exactly? Girls who like feminine guys, maybe? I'd think that's a pretty small number of people. Most "male Mahou Shoujo" are only really utilised as a comedy element. If it's males fighting, there is definitely a larger audience who find more appeal in having them being full on masculine than wearing frilly skirts. |

| You answered your own question, it's in the name. It's a genre for female leads, but that doesn't mean magical boys WITHIN these titles don't exist. Transformation sequences or not, they're there. Otherwise, magical boys would just be put into fantasy or superpower tbh.
