THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The first half of this episode was tough to watch, especially when you realize the family relationship she had with her mother. Like damn, those first words she said to her...

Also interesting to hear about Erwin's past about his father.

I felt like it was an important episode that explored characters' past. This is a season of character study so far.

While this episode was almost entirely backstory exposition, it was still very well executed by those standards and helps to add a bit more depth to a couple of characters who, while interesting, haven't exactly had massive amounts of depth up until this point. Erwin's in particular was very interesting as we knew nothing about him besides his role in the Scout Regiment - we at least knew Historia's circumstances if not the specific details last season - and the theory his father proposed would certainly make a decent amount of sense.

That seems like a pretty wild hypothesis to get from that conversation, especially since it looks like we're meant to trust it as 100% truth. I'll give props if it does turn out to be partly wrong, and we were purposely mislead, though I doubt that.

Episode 2 was among the best regarding animation. Mangaka asked anime staff to cut some parts because he thought they were too slow paced :S

I wouldn't exactly regard Imai's cut that was produced secluded from the mess that this production is for months as a general indicator on how the show holds up visually. While it hasn't jumped the shark so far, there are already signs that it's all but a healthy production.

Outside of that it already shows signs of limited and merely functional storyboarding which is already a sign of what will be a veeeery messy production. I mean Wit's production are always messy, that's no secret but this one will give them a hard time. Wanpan is also no more so they can't be saved that way like they did in Season 1.

Overall I'd adjust my expectations accordingly and expect things to spiral down even more very soon.

I cant agree or disagree about you saying its messy because i didnt read manga so i would not know. But Levis escape was awesome, i dont see all that mess in animation here and i didnt see it in the previous seasons, so i dont get your point. Of course if you see the anime only for searching bad points, you could point out almost every anime created

Great start to the Season! Fast paced and the rearranging of events, by the creator himself, have been a pleasing welcome! I didn’t find the manga of this volume boring, but the anime has surely made it more engaging and enjoyable.

I’m glad Wit Studio is providing us with more glorious animation and most importantly 2-cours. It was quite obvious from the PV and all, but a confirmation is great regardless. On another note, Op was odd and hence disappointing at first I’ll be honest, but a Linked Horizon Op would’ve been a little awkward considering what this cour is essentially about. At least, we get Linked Horizon for the ED though, so I have no problems with that. More on to the Episode, the revelations of their pasts, including Ymir too, was great to see. We’ve a candidate for worst mother too, I mean for god’s sake at least say something for once before your death but instead she just had to make sure she would totter her little girl to death with saying all that nonsense. Clearly, she was just angry at Rod Reiss but vented her anger to Historia instead.

Best moment of the Season so far goes to either Hange just being the Hange we all adore or Levi’s escape from Kenny’s squad. I can’t wait for Episode 4 now!

In the manga chapter 52, there were some kids throwing stones at young historia. The anime cut this part from her flashback. I wish if they did not cut this part because it has some connection with the recent chapter 108 that came out yesterday

Also, her grandparents were also present in her flashback. The anime made it sound like she was living alone with no people at all except her mom.

I know a few scenes don't equal good animation overall, but are you really going to tell me that the chase scene in episode 2 had awful animation?

LoL if u pay attention, its gonna be mostly the manga readers that will complain the most!! Im not saying that just cuz Isayama requested the changes the series is immune of criticism, but if everybody ignored the manga's existence and watch the anime for what it is, they will see that it isn't fast paced and everything flows nicely!!

I think Erwin has undoubtedly shaped into my favorite supporting character. Not only has he held back against a gov't that put down his father, but he became one their regiment's commanders, willing to sacrifice life & limb (literally!) on the front lines. All for the sake of humanity's victory.

On a side note, something Hange said was really unsettling. The idea that the government might have its own human-titan is enough to make my stomach turn.

3 episodes in and looks already better than any other season. I like how the art now resembles more the manga. Those black defining lines get kind of annoying when you watch them to many times.
As for the cuts from the manga, I hope they don't miss anyting because there's already a lot that was cut off. And the tone... It's leagues under the manga. I wouldn't mind if they use some gore here and there.

Is anyone else getting the sense that Attack on Titan is starting to reflect real-world problems? At least, symbolically or metaphorically. I'll probably have to go back and watch the first two seasons and actually analyze to see if I can find (or not find) something.

yes ofc, Erwin talking about the complot to erase human history, how goverment is willing to even kill if needed to protect the narrative and thus maintain the status quo, it's a pretty straight forward metaphore about the history of human civ to me.

Good episode, it looks like the story is turning deeper, manipulated by decisions from someone there that we don't even know. Erwin's job here is very complicated, excited to watch his decisions.
