Magical Girl series can broadly be divided into Shoujo series aimed at young girls and grim-dark Madoka knock-off Seinen series. I don't think that a magical girl series need to be strictly kiddie or strictly depressing and hopeless. Madoka had a decent balance of darkness and hope, but there's certainly room for stuff beyond that. How about a Josei series about a Magical Woman in her late forties balancing marriage/a professional career with protecting the world? How about a Magical Co-Ed series where girls and boys work together in a team, promoting mutual respect between genders (a la Fairy Tail)? What about an explicitly Yuri magical girl series where the lesbian couple are the main characters instead of side characters and their relationship is explicit instead of confined to a homoerotic friendship and and their relationship is thoughtfully explored and played for drama instead of fanservice? Or what about a morally ambiguous Magical Girl series where the villains actually have legitimate reason for what their doing and the cute mascot isn't telling the girls the whole story, not because it's manipulating them towards sinister purposes but because it it sincerely believes the the bad guys need to be stopped and so it's reducing their apparent humanity in the fashion of war propaganda? |

| I love, love, love the magical girl genre. The current flow is fine with me, but I would like to see different protagonist and antagonist stances in those types of shows. Somethings that's slightly constant with a sprinkle of character development- whether it's good or bad- and a heaping serving of chill. Magical girl shows are emotional roller coasters and I'm always tearing up. I'd like to get through one without shedding a tear. |

| Before this season's Machikado Mazoku, I honestly couldn't find many new magical girl shows that would be of interest of me. Lots of edgy magical girls after Madoka came out, so I guess a bunch of shows had to ride that trend... Yuki Yuna was okay, but Magical Girl Raising Project was kind of a disappointment, and Granbelm I literally dropped in 4 episodes cuz I found it boring. I kinda don't have specific interests with magical girls— I like both edgy and innocent magical girl shows. I'm kinda in the middle— I love magical girl shows, but at the same time, maybe there shouldn't be too much of them...
