There is sometimes confusion over what is considered older anime. Let's see what different fans think.

90s or older, basically anything that uses cel animation and was made before the industry became dominated by the production committee model.

That's the only distinction that really makes sense to me and that isn't just completely arbitrary.
I probably regret this post by now.

"Older" is a comparative term, it is relative and means nothing alone. It's grammar.
"Old" means anything prior to the 2010s on this website. XD (or even from before 2015 for some weird persons here)

@Pullman I thought this system became prominent in the mid to late 1990s before the full digital era. o_o

@Pullman bad english, I guess. I didn't read it this way, sorry.

Probably 1990s, at least for me.

Someone would consider 2000-2004 anime to be old just because of their graphics, but that shouldn't be a big problem. If the plot is good, the graphics don't need to be at a KyoAni level. Besides, Death Note is made in 2006 and it's extremely popular even nowadays. Can't say it's "old".

mid to late 90s is literally in the 90s, before 2000 so not sure what the issue is? Both transitions happened at around the same time.
I probably regret this post by now.

If you voted for 2010-2014 does that mean you think anime from 2014 are old?

My interpretation is that the most recent year you consider old falls somewhere in that range. It need not apply to all of the range.

It means that if I would make a comparison, it would be an older anime as compared to recent anime.

Sure, then just substitute 2010 in my question, same difference.

The guy I quoted literally said 1999 and older would be old, but voted for 2010-2014. Just doesn't make a lot of sense. Not to mention that 2010 being old is just questionable.

Just because something isn't completely recent doesn't make it old. Is it really sensible to reat 95% of anime as old and not make a difference between something from 2014 and 1971? Some anime are just anime, without being old or recent.
I probably regret this post by now.

I just use as a definition of "old anime" to mean pre-60's animation, 'cuz in the 60's came the modernization of animation and first animated TV show changing Japanese animation scene. 60's-90's anime I call retro.

I'm gonna say the 80s, but it's not a clean differentiation.

I'm mainly going by styles of shading, and to be honest those older styles of shading persisted well into the 90s and even into the 00s, but stuff like thatched shading also started to get supplanted by other shading or just solid-color in the 90s and 00s.

And now that I've voted 80s I think I should have said 90s. Oh well.

I voted 1980's because of my recent exposure to the Macross franchise this past summer. The OG series actually made me wow at it's 'classic charm' from initial glance all the way through. It was really refreshing and definitely needed.

Good to see people pointing out it's relative applicability, as such I express accordingly.

The good old days when people knew how to draw and didn't rely on CG gradients, filters and backgrounds traced over photos.

on-topic: 80's, obviously. Are you saying I'm old?

Pre 2k. Fall of cel shaded and rise of production committee aren't really sharp changes, but gradual, albeit rapid changes. At least a clear cut date (changing centuries) feels less arbitrary, and it's at the time where some of the transitions were happening.

Man those poll options are weird. Correct options have to be of the type "pre-XXXX", because that way you are setting a cut-off date where you consider anything prior to it as old and anything after it as new or modern, not options limited by intervals.

Anyway. To me the cut-off year is 2006, because that seems to be the year from which on premiered anime shows the current anime community still seems to care for, discussing, mentioning and talking about them, with shows like Death Note, Gintama and Code Geass kicking off. All the time prior to 2006 is almost like a graveyard for them.

Being generous, older anime could be considered anything before the 2010s. But otherwise, I would say that older anime is from the 90s and prior.

Interesting question that made me realize my own contradiction.

When I watch a 90's anime, I identify it as 'older anime' since I recognize cel animation and all, but whenever I refer to 'older anime' I'm explicitly thinking of anything from the 80's and earlier...

So I guess the year 2000 would be my cutting point? I mean, it's a more logical place to make a divide if we really must.

I don't know what I'd consider old, but I generally separate 'old' from 'classic'.

For example, I'd consider the original Lupin III a 'classic' because while it's an old series, it's still alive today. Anything that's 'old' is something that's not around today outside of what existed in it's own time period.
