A TV anime adaptation of the Boogiepop light novel series was announced on Saturday at the Dengeki Bunko 25th Anniversary stage event during Dengeki Game Festival. The anime adaptation, titled Boogiepop wa Warawanai, is scheduled to air in 2018.

The Boogiepop series, which has 21 volumes in print, is written by Kouhei Kadono and illustrated by Kouji Ogata. The 22nd volume of the series will go on sale on April 10. The series was previously adapted into a 12-episode TV anime produced in 2000 by studio Madhouse. That series was licensed in North America by Nozomi Entertainment as a DVD set in 2012.

A two-volume manga adaptation of the novel's first volume was serialized between 1999 and 2002. To commemorate the new anime adaptation, two new manga serializations based on the light novels will begin in Dengeki Daioh and Dengeki G's Comic magazines later this year.

North American publisher Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed both the original light novel and the first manga series in English.

Synopsis
There is an urban legend that tells of a shinigami that can release people from the pain they are suffering. This "Angel of Death" has a name–Boogiepop. And the legends are true. Boogiepop is real. When a rash of disappearances involving female students breaks out at Shinyo Academy, the police and faculty assume they just have a bunch of runaways on their hands. Yet some students know better. Something mysterious and foul is afoot. Is it Boogiepop or something even more sinister...? (Source: Seven Seas Entertainment)

The OG was done so well and I was nervous about this because they don't make/pace anime like they used to. So having Shingo Natsume (opm and ACCA director) tackling this project is a plus. It is in good hands and being at Madhouse is an added bonus even tho they did the OG series as well. Also this is adapting a new story not Phantom. HYPED!!!

Ehhh????? Really? Ok. I'm down with this. Phantom was pretty iffy, but it was quite interesting. Let's see if they do the same formula with this new series.

A surprise announcement :o

I'm looking forward to this. Been so long since I've seen the original Boogiepop though so might even give it a rewatch this year.

So what is this? a sequel? or a remake? or just a spinoff? I haven't watch the original series yet.

This should be great LN adaptation show sure considering the solid staff are involving on this show, and especially looking forward to another Kensuke Ushio's music another time this year :-)

It seems like I have to check out the original Boogiepop asap beforehand for greater experience watching this show.

EDIT!: Holy moly! the PV looks too much impressive! :O

Holy shit, I never expected this to happen! And the staff and PV look so good too! I'm so down for Shingo Natsume and Tomohiro Suzuki abandoning One Punch Man for this, haha
And for those who are confused, this seems to be a straight up adaptation of the novels. Boogiepop Phantom was not really an adaptation, it was its own sort of thing. So you shouldn't need to watch it to understand this, though it's still a good show.

So one of the very 1st LN adaptation in history getting a remake?
They better adapt all the novels for the sake of complete adaptation, i hope they still stick around on darker atmosphere.

OPM 2 didn't die yet. If J.C. Staff can get some talented freelancer animators, then it's all good.

This adaptation was a surprise since I've heard a lot about the LNs. Excited for this!!

I think Shimizu would be okay to reprise her role because of her deep voice which sounded perfect for Boogiepop, but I can understand recast, and Yuki is also very good seiyu.

Hopefully we get to see more of Boogiepop in near future, because I really like setting and characters.

These are the kind of revivals that I love.

Based on the trailer, it doesn't seem like the series will retain the originals surreal, Eraserhead esque atmosphere. Oh well.

Those are top-tier staff, even the composer. Really nice. I am not interested in Boogiepop Phantom in the slightest, but this is a different beast entirely. And the PV, of course it's great.

It's only March and madhouse has 7 anime to air in 2018. No wonder last year they were recruiting new animator for their project, but i didn't expected they produce more than 4 anime this year.

AFAIk there's like 20 volumes right now, and it's still not finished? That would require at least 80 to 100 episodes to adapt without rushing too much ...

The PV is preanimated like the other new Madhouse show (Most likely directed by Natsume himself). Don't expect it to maintain the same level of quality because ACCA was outsourced to hell when it was airing.

Holy fuck, never expected this. Solid staff all around, and although it won't retain the surreal atmosphere that I loved, I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully the new soundtrack by Kensuke Ushio lives up to the fantastic OST from Phantom.

If Shikao Suga comes back to perform the opening then I couldn't ask for more.

That is all because Studios want to look more polished and clean.
An unpolished look can give more atmosphere in the right hand.
Just look at both the old and new Kino's journey for example.
The old one is far less polished but has atmosphere partly because of that.

Same can be said about gritty. It is to hard to do now due to animation being so clean.

What a coincidence, I also thought about reviving Lain because of this Boogiepop announcement - they both have that similar early 2000s dark atmosphere, and Lain is also voiced by Kaori Shimizu (Signum).

Btw, saw your profile; 2000s kid who has Gunbuster and Macross: DYRL in his favorites, one rarely sees that.

HYPE! First Kino and now this. Judging by its PV It's not going to have the same mysterious atmosphere I liked so much. I wish another studio had done it. Sometimes Madhouse tries too hard to make it popular imo. And Kirima Nagi's new design really sucks.
