Now that you think of it yeah you're right. Maybe she learnt while on the war? But then that can't happen since first off she can't have time to learn to write while fighting XD and then in the first episode she didn't know how to write. I think she lied or smt? Or that the novel said she learnt it a few years ago while the anime (which is mainly original content) got it mixed up... Maybe the director didn't check it up or something...

Anime producers made a mistake. In the novel, she doesn't say anything related to her having learnt writing a few years ago when she is typing for Leon.

However, the only time where she mentions learning something is during the conversation with those other men. She says this

“It has only been a few years ever since I learned how to read.”

So they should've said 'read', not 'write'.
Makes sense. You gotta be careful when doing an original show loosely based on an existing media as well. Btw, you are a big fan of Gilbert aren't you? XD

Yeah. Doesn't get enough screen time though.

My God can we tell her Gilbert has died already. Every time she mentions him, it feels strange. I mean. I have heard she doesn't mention him as much in the novel so it definitely feels off.
This episode was a downer until the last few moments. Previous episode and even 3-4 ones were much better imo.

Not much happened, but it makes me wonder how they'll culminate all these emotions Violet is discovering. Probably by making her realize that major is dead or something.

Regarding the episode, it was much more about Leon than Violet, which is fine, but usually Violet would develop more as a character while getting to know other people. In this episode it didn't feel like it.

Wasn't too bad though, just nothing to celebrate (apart from the awesome art as always).
Average episode (3/5), good series so far (7/10) but I feel it's gonna have a great ending so the rating might go up.

Remember at the start of the first episode Violet was already trying to write a report to him concerning her condition? She already knew how to read and write before becoming a Doll and it's most likely Gilbert was the one who taught her (particularly since he wanted her to grow up as a normal person). Only reason she couldn't write was because she wasn't used to her prosthetic arms yet.

Nice. Chapter 4 has been adapted. Good to see Luculia again.

This episode went so fast, felt a bit too rushed. I think they reduced quite a lot of the dialogue between Leon and Violet. This could've been the best episode but they didn't do well on it.

Would've preferred the novel's ending of chapter 4 as well. I'm not sure why they changed Leon's hair colour...

Also I was surprised that they didn't include the fact that it was actually Cattleya who was supposed to be there, not Violet. The dolls had to stay for 30 days, and since Cattleya was already busy with other jobs, Violet replaced her for a week and left earlier than all the other dolls.

Sorry for bothering you, but where did it come out on. I can't seem to find it anywhere whatsoever. I am only finding episode 4 titled episode 6.

Actually, she learned how to write from Hodgins after getting her prosthetic arms. Gilbert only taught her how to speak and maybe read, since during the war he didn't have much time to teach her writing due to missions. After all, they were in a special unit. She only knew how to write Gilbert's name before Hodgins taught her. But in the anime, they got rid of all that and made it look like she knew how to write already. A pity since there was some interesting development between her and Hodgins while he taught her.

I finally grew to love this anime! (or rather the episode before, if this would be the second ep I would have dropped it)
First I nearly dropped it, but Violet really grows to my heart. She learned that she is indeed lonely. It will break her heart once she realizes Gilbert is no more.

I really really would love to have some OVAs set during the war, explore more about what person Gilbet was, what backstory Violet has and yes some nice Kyoani high budget war scenes too.

Also it is me or did we have some time skips? I did not notice a set time, but it feels that way with Iris working for a different company now. I think we should have gotten another episode with Claudia before this one, this way it feels like we had a huuuge time skip.

Thank you for your insights. I'm looking forward to reading the original source later on, too. For now, I decided to go with the animated series, otherwise, I might spoil it. Currently, I really am enjoying this series a lot and even if it isn't 100% adapted and at some points were changed a lot, I think it is one of the best series I have seen for some time. Looking forward to your comments on these topics as well.

Now, this is what I want to see from this series.

The direction here is amazing, the music placement is suiting, the animation is beautiful, the story is interesting, Literally, everything in this episode felt great for me!
There is character development for side characters here as well, though it works pretty slowly on Violet.

Damm, I really thought tsundere boy was a girl at first lol...

5/5 This is what I want to see from Violet Evergarden.

I totally agree with you on the first points. Hahahahaha, no idea why, but him being a girl didn't cross my mind, at all. Though, now as I read your comment, I kinda can imagine it. So glad, that they didn't put more tsundere typical behavior to it. Otherwise, it might have become non-natural for the flow of the series.

Translation: "If I'm not good enough for you, then BTFO." PWNED! +1 to Violet!

Among the side characters we've come across, I think Leon is the best one yet. He's a little similar to Violet, and he got to converse with her a lot about who she is and what she feels. Nice episode overall.

I like how they showed that this profession is criticized, it hints a little bit at the rules and the moral thinking of the society. I wonder how they will include it further in the upcoming episodes. Feels promising to me.

Hahaha, to be honest, I thought at first, that this "meet-up" was an excuse for them to get their hands on the beautiful woman. XD #datingconvention
Luckily, in the end, it seemed more professional. But,... who knows what the other guys and gals were doing... ;)

I also like Violet's salutes. .___.)/ But I think, we will see it again at some point.

Actually, I liked all side characters so far, but it was really nice to see Luculia again, as I wasn't sure, if that will actually happen in this type of episodic storytelling.
So far so good, the put a lot of thought into the Violet Evergarden series.

Me, too. Still hoping that the major will make a comeback. After all, the animated series is different from the novels, right? From what I've read in previous episode discussions, in the novel he died, right? Wouldn't it be nice if the series would end in a happy end for Violet?

I really liked this episode although there were some changes from the novel like Leon's appearance, I don't know why they decided to give him white skin and dark hair...
The backgrounds were pretty, I imagined it like that when I was reading the novel. Leon's character, his interactions with Violet and his background were faithful to to novel, although I think they should have spent more time on his story. But it was really moving.
They also changed the farewell scene, and Leon's confession, but I think it was well done in the episode.

So despite the changes, I liked this episode, my favorite one with Luculia's, and I hope the next ones will be based on the novel. Episodes with Erica, Iris and Charlotte were a waste of time for me.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who's kinda disappointed with this episode. I was looking forward to the adaptation of this chapter, but it feels completely rushed and several scenes are skipped, if not altered completely.

No mention of Cattleya whatsoever; no description of how Leon's view toward women changed after that, and how Violet is basically the first one he ever fell in love with; Leon's infamous green hair didn't make any appearance and instead changed into Gilbert's hair color; no confession from Leon at all; and most of all, the one I'm most disappointed about is the fact that there's no meeting between them in the future like in the novel. IT COMPLETELY DESTROYS THE MESSAGE IMO, AND I'M SO SAD

Well, this is pretty much a "nothing" episode. Heck, you can't even track the Leon's progression as a character, retroactively trying to cover ground for his characterization, but it's just backdrop anyway. Even his behavior can't be inferred enough because he is so condensed by the screenplay.

Even moreso, this episode tried to put over Violet even more, despite still being as personable as a wet noodle. She's shown to stick up to others, despite her cold attitude, now she learns longing and loneliness, another metaphorical "step" to "learn what love is". And sacrificing Leon's character in the process by making him a fanboy of Violet in the process.

So now, we see that Violet is perfectly competent by developing her emotional reading skills offscreen(yay timeskips), and now we see how she makes fanbois. It's hilarious what military training and a bit of WAR does to an orphan.

Leon blamed his mother for leaving him, and saw love as something that makes everyone act irrational, he also seems to have resentment towards women in general. When Violet tells him that she would leave to find that person she loves, Leon is surprised, he didn't think even someone like Violet, as robotic and perfect as she seems to be, would act the way her mother did. He's acknowledging that part of human nature, and decides to step out of his comfort zone, maybe unconsciously wanting to go look for his parents even though that's an irrational action that will most likely get him killed as well. I haven't read the novel but I didn't think this episode was "nothing", far from it. if you can't track his progression that's on you more than the screenplay.

I'm sorry, I know the novel might have told a totally different story or depict it in another way. For me, this episode didn't feel out of the place as I haven't read the novels, yet. There might be more background on this and more reasoning why exactly Violet was there, but if they had included it, I guess it wouldn't fit into "one" episode. I'm quite interested in the changes they made. What did Leon originally look like? After watching this episode, I thought he was a fitting character to this series.

Actually, I can imagine that the mother of Leon just wanted to protect him by leaving him behind. After all, she was going on a dangerous journey.I also liked this scene, where EVEN such a person as Violet would do the same and do everything for the other person. Although, what I even liked more was her response. It was about how to apologize to Leon because of leaving him behind and not fulfilling her given task aka the duty to finish her work there.

Last but not least, I know that the last episode ends on a cliffhanger, but Violet asked at some point during this episode, if she is allowed to have such a beautiful profession, it didn't feel as if the didn't continue at all. Of course, I would have seen more of the conversation between Violet and the mysterious guy who knows more about her past aka Naval Captain Dietfrien Bougainvillea, but the talk she had with him left his marks within her. Even if we only were able to recognise a little bit in this episode. I think at a later point we will learn more about that particular conversation. The cliffhanger puts even more importance and weight to it.

EDIT: One more thing, I grow to love the ending song more and more. It really fits this series and somehow it is placed quite well at the end of every episode.. Or let's say, they made the end of the episode fitting to the ending song as well as being an interesting conclusion to the episode.

I've read the novel and episode 6 didn't feel out of the place, even with the changes they've done (according to me). I do think that Leon's story deserved to be told as it was in the novel, but you're kinda right, they focused on the most important parts.
In the novel, he's more a tsundere than in the anime, but in the anime they didn't really developped his "hate" for women. But the fact that he didn't cleary tell Violet that he loves her is consistent with the fact that in the anime, they didn't manage to show everything about him, his story. So I think that despite the changes, it was a good episode, it was as interesting as the novel chapter. Although they really could respect his novel appearance (brown skin and greenish hair according to the description since in the illustration we don't get to see his face).

While I was reading the novel, I was also thinking that Leon's mother wanted to protect him by leaving him behind but we can't be sure since we don't get to know what she was thinking, we only got Leon's point of view.

You're right about Dietfried in the previous episode, but what annoys me is the fact that we got to see few novel content adapted and too much fillers since the beginning. I don't know how they'll handle what's left since in the novel, after the war Dietfried doesn't meet Violet this early in the story. But it seems that Charlotte story will be include in the Gaiden...

I suppose I'm the only one who doesn't like the ending song lol...

Interesting, thank you for your insights. Wow, Leon... I wouldn't have thought of this combination of looks. Actually, it is difficult to imagine such a character behaving like a tsundere.

About the ending song, at first I wasn't that fond of it, but I still thought, that it is fitting to the ending of the first episodes, but somehow, now I'm growing to like it more and more.

The first strong episode to date. Violet's longing towards Gilbert felt genuine and affectionate. It even brought a tear to my eye. Leon and Violet played off nicely off each other. If only the show would continue the momentum around and have the characters like Luculia and Leon be involved, it could turn out as something great. KyoAni needs to figure out some other music for important moments. Kyoani has been using the same song for every emotional zinger, and it is really bringing the show down, and it was no different in the Alley's Comet scene at night between Violet and Leon.

Well, looks like we'll all be shooting for the stars now!....Wait, what's that? (chitter chatter on the phone) Oh you want to go to Germany? WHY NOT!?!

So, looks like I missed talking about last episode, so I'll talk about it in a later discussion. tl;dr, I did not like the middle part of the last episode, the beginning and end was great, but here, I want to talk about the latter. For those of you who don't remember, last episode Violet met a man who was apparently a survivor of one of her.........missions, and asks her, "How can a person like you be a ghost writer?" or something along the lines like that. This episode, WE'RE IN AN OBSERVATORY IN THE MIDDLE OF...............I think, the Himalayas?

If you couldn't tell from my tired unenthusiastic ramble to do little to no research, I was a bit disappointed with where the series went, not the entire episode as a whole, we'll get to that (Spoiler Alert: It's actually a lot better in retrospect) With an ending like that, and an episode like this, is like a whiplash of epic proportions! Some of you might have had a flashback with how 'Kino's Journey' (2017) was handled, with the show only featuring the best episodes. I'm getting the same vibes here. So with that out of the way, how does the episode hold on its own.

To be honest, GREAT!
In this episode, we see a boy who, seemingly, don't like women (I say seemingly, because that's not the case, which we will get back to later) and it just so happens Violet Evergarden just so happens to pop in, and Lucullia and her friends from 'Tornadus' School for Girls Who Can't Write Good, Who Wants to Write REAL Good' are there too! The Dolls have to pair up with one of the boys, the establishment Leon works in is apparently an all boys institute, and Leon and Violet just so happens to be paired up!

What are the odds!

So Grumpy boy decides to intentionally screw Violet over by reading too fast, but it only ended up making them look awesome instead. (PLEASE NERF) In the library, Grumpy looks for some books and he just so happens to hear some boys trying to hit on Violet by berating Leon. Low blows assholes! But Violet defends him by saying that if societal grounds are dictated by your upbringing and that she's an orphan too, so what? Too which the boys leave and their virgin boner hangs dry for another century.
Hearing this, Leon feels a Zing! and gathers the courage to ask her out for stargazing. There he reveals his tragic backstory.

And I might have to be bring up Pokemon once more, (for those of you who are not familiar, I made one in my discussion of one of the Re;Creators episodes involving Gary)

If you remember the Episode 'Showdown at Pewter Gym', most of you remember how Brock, a gym leader, had to look after 9 CHILDREN (Holy SHIT!) since his father left on his own Pokemon journey and his mother, sick of this, left (Not faking her death out of spite, like the dub led us to believe) Here we see a family suffer because a man puts his own aspirations before his own family's well-being, and the burden Brock had to shoulder. In this episode, Leon's father left, likely during a tempestuous time, and disappeared. Determined, his mother sets off to look for him, leaving poor little boy Leon all alone. She too disappeared. This is why Leon had a resentment towards the Dolls, it's not that he hates women, it's that he hates people who travel around, since it's reminiscent of his parents. See the comparison here? In both cases we have parents who put their own aspirations ahead of their loved ones (for Leon's father, it was manuscripts and literature, leading to his mother leaving him for her husband) and we see the consequence in its fullest form.

So, after that, Violet shares her story about 'The Major' (girls squeal in the background) and Leon puts 2+2 together, and just when he tells her the solution, Jirachi's comet makes an appearance across the Aurora Borealis. Surely, this is no ill omen!

Finding a new purpose for life, Leon finally respects and appreciates his father's goals and is set to go on a journey of his own. He shouts it out to Violet and we end on a more optimistic note. Pity that Leon's solution never reached her.....OH WELL!

Unlike last episode, this felt a little more satisfying, and it opened a little room to make a reference to a plot point in the Pokemon anime.

Let's see what the wind of Tornadus' chiseled abs brings us next time.
ONWARDS! Away from homework and on to more anime!!!

Wait so where goes that scene with "this guy's brother" from last week? I thought it was importat, but now we get LOOK AT STARS...COMET.
"The future is always blank. Only your willpower can leave footsteps there."

"Ruling over death means ruling over life. Death is the climax of life. To have the best death, you must honor life."

I didn't really like it. It's okay as a side story, but chances are, this has little meaning in the grand scheme of thing. Violet had arguably no character development, the plot progression has stagnated for the second episode in a row (and maybe more), and the character they developed the most (Leon) is probably never going to show up again. A full episode, and all they did was develop the side character that we won't see again, not developing the actual protagonist or progressing the main story and plot. The progress between the two didn't really make sense (probably because of the cut-out source material), and it was rushed. Granted, it's not like I wanted this extended to two episodes for this short story, because that would be even more time away from actual core development. In a vacuum, the episode was okay, not spectacular, but also still had the trademark beautiful animations (besides random as hell look into Leon's room before the comet). But in the grand scheme of things, the long game, this was little more than filler, minimal impact on the future, minimal plot and character development, and failing to make a lasting impression on myself at least.

I want to love VE, I really do, but there's been no development to keep me wanting more. These episodes are individual short stories with no bearing on her development, and that's wasted potential right there. Make the developments go through Violet, show her developing in a society where she doesn't fit in, show her experiencing the grief from finding out about the Major (This old dance around the question of "Is he alive?" is getting real old, real fast), show her doing SOMETHING that has a bearing on the future. One could watch episode 1 & 2, skip to 6, and not miss a beat, that's how little plot progression and character development there has been.

WOW! The OST feels like the works of Kajiura Yiku with a mash-up of Disney lolz but i know that it's from Evan Call.
So we have comet gazing huh and a dude who might be captivated and mezmerized by Violet!
OMG! that smile of Violet made her so gorgeously beautiful!!! (21:07 & 21:20)
Anyone does agree with me that the music from 19:07 - 22:10 is very similar to from the music of Madoka by Kajiura which is: "Sagitta luminis" ???
5/5.

MAL admins, please add the VA of Leon Stephanotis as Uemura Yuuto. thx.

I thought this was another really solid one. I'm amazed that I still find Violet to be as compelling as I do. And I think KyoAni has really sold this show by having so much detail put into the animation. I was thinking about it in the scene where it lingers on Violet after she's asked to go star gazing. Even though she betrays no immediate emotions. I was captivated by the nuance and small details in her shifting expressions. This show is always riveting and pleasant, if not life changing, every episode. Can't wait for more.

Not gonna lie, towards the part of the comet, my heart started getting flooded with feels, really hope we see Leon again.

We saw Luculia again. There's a good chance Violet would encounter Leon somewhere in her travels if they happen to be in the same place.

I meant a whole new anime. The setting and everything else made me realize I would like a strong slice of life with male characters. We dont get much of those. Or maybe I just suck at finding them.

Why are the dolls talking up/using honorifics to the librarians and the librarians talking down?? The librarians don't really seem upper class anyway, considering the MC of this EP

Enjoyable episode, went by quickly. Not an ace but a solid return
