Me, personally i love dubs. I was surprised when i joined Mal that most people
hated dubs or prefered subs over dubs.
Why is that? Why do you guys like subs so much or hate dubs?

Because they can't afford or don't want to hire competent voice actors and translators. Also everything is generally better with the original voices anime or not.

I kinda prefer watching something the way it was MEANT to be seen first. I have no problems watching the dub afterwards but a lot of times, I don't.

Some dubs ARE superior to the original voice acting though.

Pretty much this. It is not only limited to anime. Be it K-doroma, European movies etc., I have always preferred watching them with reading English subtitles.

I am sure the Simpsons would suck if I saw it in Japanese.

I will never admit dubs can be better, but I'll at the very least appreciate what they doing even if I don't particularly like their voice acting. Because it's for the sake of anime. :3
if you tell me female goku is better than english goku you have a screw loose (also in some lewd comedies like desert punk and Air Gear the english version is just funnier, cant speak about the voices though as i dont remember the jap version)

Good dubs are a scarcity. Original voice have been always preferred, even if it isn't anime. Usually, it's portrayed rightly than the dubs. Of course, there are some that I consider better than subs e.g.g Cowby Beebop, Space Dandy and FMAB.

No, I'm never gonna watch DB in the first place....
damn thats like a really good example of dub being better unfortunately.... i also hear cowboy bepop obviously but as heretical as it is for an anime fan to say i havent watched much of it (and none sub). and no wonder you didnt rate Air Gear better, you probably watched the weaker version :p

I don't hate dubs, but for someone who wants to learn Japanese and maybe even take a trip to Japan I would love to hear wtf they are saying. Also, from the dubs I've seen, they've either been okay or hilariously bad. If you want a good laugh, go watch the Danganronpa the Animation dub, it's funnier then it should be tbh.

I used to love dubs. But once you start watching subs and you start enjoying them you notice a big fat difference
some voices dont fit the character.
some things just sound wrong

also after a good number of dubs its like its the same voices over and over

plus some great anime dont have dubs

I recommend you to stop watching dubs and watch the superior subs like a big boy

The very idea of an English dub in an anime is criminal to some people it seems, regardless of actual quality. It either stems from some sort of superiority complex or just an irrational bias. Maybe both.

I definitely agree with this. One of the first dubs I tried to watch was Special A, and one guy's voice was a lot deeper than it was supposed to be. It sounded so weird.

Hopefully the english dub is fine as it is. I mean I've encountered some other language dubs that made the english one sound like heavenly music in my ears. XD!

Dubs don't sound as good as subs. Like they sound kind of weird and just don't fit the characters' voices as well as subs, I don't know how to explain it.

Just wanna go with what was intended by the director instead of some random choices for dub. And it's not even an anime-only problem, far from that actually.

Also applies for translations...

To be honest, I like watching shows in their original language. For me, it would sound weird in a different language. There ARE good dubs out there, there are even some that people consider superior to the original. It's just that it has been overtaken by bad dubs. There are also times where the voices just doesn't fit the characters, bad acting, etc.

Help, I'm hooked into the Fate series (not all) and am obsessed with Shirou x Saber!
Also, forever hoping for a ufotable remake of the Fate route!

Most of them do not sound anywhere near as good as the original voice actors, to me dubs sound corny while the original voices sound authentic. Also, translating accents/dialects requires finding an equivalent, which makes the voice acting sound much worse. Just compare the performances in these two clips, the English voice actors for Chiyo and Osaka don't fit their characters as well as the originals do. I prefer watching anything in it's original language anyways, the way the creators intended.

Although I might want to check dubs if only they have subtitles too. Most of the time I can't really follow on what they're saying because of their accent and the possibility of misheard some words.

Professional dubs are ok, however I would still prefer to hear original voices of seiyuu,
since they are more emotionally vivid (not sure how to say it better but I think you got the idea).

To me, voice of character is important, this is how I perceive their personality traits and make an impression about them.

Fandub ruins that impression of a character and even the whole show.
And I probably won't appreciate advantages of dub if voices are ugly and sound is poor (which is usually the case with fandub)

I'm used to watching with subs from a long time ago no matter what the original language is. I always preferred to hear proper actors' voices and now I can't stand dubs at all. They just seem so wrong.
And yeah, I'm not talking only about anime, cause english is my second language and just imagine how many great acting I would have missed out if I stuck to dubs.

Idk, I don't hate dubs, I just prefer the original audio for whatever I watch in general and I can't understand why anyone would not have that same general preference. Doesn't mean that you can't enjoy some dubs or have to hate them, but it just seems natural to me to prefer the original ideally. Dubs are a compromise where you get more convenience but sacrifice some of the stuff that gets lost in translation as well as some of the intentions of the creators because there are new casting decisions, new scripts written by people who were not involved with the original project. And that's fine, sometimes I like to watch a dub too for convenience and in some cases the different version can be very good in their own right and some VAs even better in a role than the original VA. But that doesn't change that it's a different version, not the one the original creators intended, but more of an interpretation made my people who weren't even there when the show was created and who might not be aware of what it was going for, or miss some nuances or subtleties.

Add that to the fact that stuff gets lost in translation in general and you can't prevent that and the only reason I can see to still prefer dubs is just convenience/laziness with subs, or a strong affinity with specific english voice actors that you just love to hear. Which are still fine reasons. And I don't think most dubs are bad either, I think they're generally okay but even a good dub is just not the original and therefore will never be my first choice. Even if there are a lot of good and okay dubs, there are no perfect dubs because there is no perfect translation.

But there are definitely a lot of people who irrationally hate and shit on dubs with a weird aggression to it and I don't like those people either because I've enjoyed many a dub (well, a few dozen I'd say) and don't think most of them are shit (at least not outside of old OVAs). I divide them into three categories:
1. People who also prefer the original, but kinda end up developing an exaggerated superior complex based on that where they are so closed-minded they can't accept the different and specific role that dubs play.
2. The audio weebs who just love the japanese language so much that they even watch western productions like Castlevania in japanese audio. They don't care about the original even if they say otherwise. They're just married to japanese.
3. The political weebs who glorify japan and their society and everything and hate the west for stupid, generalized reasons and want nothing to do with any western media and don't want western media to touch any of their 'unique' niches. You'll know them by their excessive use of the term 'SJW', among other indicators.

So yeah, you gotta learn to tell the difference between these kind of people and people who just prefer the original in general because it's the natural thing to do. It has nothing to do with anime or japan, I wouldn't want watch a swedish TV series, a portuguese netflix show or a french comedy special any other way than original audio with subs either.

American TV shows being dubbed in my local language (german) sound just as weird and fake as a german series being dubbed to english. Dubs are always fakes, impostors and you need to be aware of that when you watch them. At best they're trying to imitate the original, at worst they're rewriting it into a different kind of show and might have very little in common with what made the original appealing (inb4 someone quotes Kaiki on me, and yeah the fake can be superior in certain ways but as a general preference I'll always pick the original unless I'm proven otherwise. Some exceptions surely exist, but as the name says those are exceptions and not the standard).

And lastly I'm pretty sure that one reason for this whole conflict is just that people get married to their first impressions, first experiences when it comes to dubs, and then never budge ever again from what they see as the superior version of a specific show. You can see it in this thread, and it's usually the dub fans who are making elitist statements based on that like 'Anyone who likes japanese Goku is a weeb cause it's objectively terrible'. No, it's not, otherwise it wouldn't have become one of the biggest franchises in Japan.

I do have some titles where I prefer the dub (Bebop, Slayers, Kino's Journey) but DB is not one of them. I never grew up with the english version so I don't have any attachment to it and I like the original audio a lot and can't even remember how Goku sounded in german when I saw him on TV as a kid. Any dub elitist who can't get it in their head that their Goku preference is just a mixture of their personal taste and first exposure bias and no god-given truth, is just as bad as the weebs I talked about above and they deserve to argue with each other in youtube comments for all eternity.
I probably regret this post by now.

Mainly since most dubs voices sound awkward as hell and don't generally fit the characters, but also cause it's generally better to watch the original translation for understanding

It's like tryna justify that the Japanese subbed version of a western TV show like Game of Thrones is better done than the original English version. Dubbing over any show in a different language is gonna sound awkward nonetheless, since they can't match the exact pacing and tone of the original voices

The picks for VAs are appalling. They sound dead. Some of them are overdone to the point of extreme cringe. Characters lose the intended aspects. The language peculiarities are gone. Some translations are just bad.

For me, the sub(original audio) > dub notion applies to every language and medium, not anime exclusively.

Suddenly, someone slaps you with a brick wall.

I personally don't like it because I find the voice acting in English dub to be monotone and boring; English VA's are just reading from the script and not giving emotions where as Japanese dubs, well everyone here can argue that it's better for obvious reasons.
