Angels Egg Blu-ray Release Outside of Japan

Tenshi no Tomago (Angels Egg), is a personal favourite of mine and a film I hold in high regard. Like such works of art, I have a tendency to buy and collect these works which expose me to new styles of art, story telling, and directing. Unfortunately, it seems that there is only one region 2 release for Angels Egg which is currently priced at £50 used, or £450 new on Amazon. On top of the fact that this price is far out of my budget for a movie, Amazon has kindly left out whether or not this release contains English subtitles. As of 2013 however, Japan has released a blu-ray release of this film going for ¥6,156, or roughly £40, but unfortunately doesn't contain English subtitles.

I'm disappointed that a movie just over three decades old, and directed by the legendary Mamoru Oshii, has yet to have a stable release. What do you guys think, is it worth holding my breath for Anchor Bay Entertainment to do something about this? It seems strange that (according to ANN), Angels Egg is the only licensed yet unreleased movie by ABE.

It's probably because it's old and obscure. How many people even know Tenshi no Tamago? There's no need for other distributors to license it so Amazon can have prices as high as it wants.

interestingly though, it's the second most popular pre-90s ova on MAL (after gunbuster)

Really? And I thought it was obscure as hell.

I suppose obscurity and popularity aren't so correlated - which is good to hear. Albeit niche, it still has a cult-like following.

Someone needs to rip it and upload it to nyaa for all the old animu fans to stumble upon. They’ll simultaneously drop their pants.

The thing is, I don't think the two statements contradict each other. The second most popular 80s OVA can still be obscure.
I probably regret this post by now.

You're right, didn't think about that. And looking at the amount of users again my point still stands.

It's worth watching to at least form your own opinion on it. I understand that many won't see any worth in the movie, and I readily reject this opinion. But this is besides the question - what are the chances of a release? It pains me to say they seem quite low, but I put the question out there for any information regarding its development which I might not know...

Luckily, I can confirm there are a few rips on nyaa.si with English subtitles - and I did drop my pants... But I wouldn't have time to drop em' if there was a release I could buy on blu-ray :D

Sure, I'll give a go. :D I hear it's very visually captivating and I am a sucker for that stuff. I also know it's really old. Kinda surprised I never saw it at video rental stores since it seems like the thing they'd pick up: short OVA licensed by U.S. Manga Corps....if I'm not mistaken....
