Aside from fantasizing, I don't understand why romance is such a beloved genre.

Long story short, I have a shitty history with romance (10+ crushes in 5th and 6th grades). I believe that most fiction confuses hormonal urges and familiar, platonic attraction, with actual romance, something should take years to properly develop.

I like how with romance anime, I can fantasize of having a sweet and likeable girl (I hate real girls). I especially find it hot when the girl is a powerful supernatural creature.

Sure man, if you like them because you can fantasize/self-insert yourself, good for you. That's a valid reason. Personally I think most people like romance anime because they are often idealized. I know what I see in anime is unlikely to happen in real life. Despite that, I still continue to watch because, well.. I like to see the unusual occur. The fantasy of the story is the appeal. I'll look into my life instead if I want a boring romance story.

I don't. It's even my least favorite genre according to my malgraph and it's impressive how it's even managed to be lower than harem, which generally is my most disliked one. And seems like the fact that 2 of my 10/10s (which is 50%) are tagged as 'romance' didn't really help - I'm not sure what happened.

But yeah I'm generally not a fan of romance anime, most of the times they don't make me feel anything except cringe. I like romances with adults who don't overdramatize little things, and I also like the ones that focus more on comedy than the romance itself (like Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun or the first season of Oregairu), I kinda like the sad ones with supernatural elements too (if done right without too many ass-pulls), but I cringe when I see all those teenage dramas, shoujos or forced stuff like SAO. Maybe I'm too old for this, dunno.

I like it, but not a fan of it. Sometimes, watching romance anime fills the hole in my heart and feels so comfortable. I know it's just a fictional and scripted, but that's the reason why I watch romance. The unreal sensation, the bittersweet moments and all of the good moments that's not possible in real life can be happened in anime.

As far as I know, people in real life like to encourage certain individuals to get together. Within fiction, it's a nice feeling to have this idea of an ideal couple where they seem to be made for each, something that most likely will not happen in real life.

I'm pretty sure in real life when people first get together, they confess with "I love you" too. I don't quite understand the point you are making here. You want your fiction to specifically have characters distinguish romance and hormonal urges/platonic attaction, when no one in real life does anything of the sort with their word when confessing to the one they are attracted to?

I get this feeling, it's genuinely strange and actually a little shocking when you ind that you have an unexpected genre you rate worst than the harem genre.

In my case, according to MALgraph it's managed to be ranked lower than 2nd lowest, slightly above ecchi but below harem.

That said, I agree that anime that are more focused on comedy trying to switch to romance in its 2nd season often don't work as well

Love is joy alongside with an idea of its cause, which means that love, as a kind of joy, increase your power to strive. So, we can all assume that people like to be affected with joy.

Anyway, concerning Romance anime, that's simple I guess; when we go along with the idea of love, by emulation, we're affected of love as well. And by a moment there, you can fell your power to strive increased. That's why people probably like to watch, and I include me in this analitical process as well.

A good romance makes me care for them first, so I want them to be happy. It doesn't work in real life, of course, but it does when the people in question are fictional characters written specifically to be interesting. It's like having sentient pets.

Weeeeeell I often wonder "why do teenage boys need so much fan service in anime? shouldn't they just be watching porn if they need something to wank to?"

I watch romance anime for the same reason I read non anime/manga romance novels.

I enjoy living vicariously through the girl in the story.

I wish it was more common in anime to resolve the romance more so. Shows like Itazura na Kiss are just too rare (where it isn't just the 4 years of high school).

I like romance novels because it has a beginning and a resolution with all the drama in between. The girl always gets the guy.

I wish my own life had the happy ending part too. I'm still waiting here, and after 3 years of online dating, well, I have nothing much nice to say about online dating.

Anime doesn't do that. In anime, two characters find each other hot, they spend some time (like everyone does), and just "fall in love".

I never got why Louis and Saito fell for each other in Familiar of Zero, when there's literally nothing about their personalities that are compatible: Louis is 90% of the time a stuck-up bitch, and Saito can't stand that, and Louis can't stand people who don't submit to her. They don't seem to share any common interests.

Pretty much. I like the idea of being with someone as the "less convenient option" so it really tests how much a character is devoted to the person they like.

This is my ideal romance to see:

Two characters start off hating each other. As they hang out more, they learn they have more common interests, and so on. As they continue arguing, they feel closer.

For the same reason why people write and tell each other lovestories since forever. There is barely a stronger inner drive and motivation.
So most people look for it in fiction too.

It's not even the self-insert for me, because I really hate that. I just want to see both of these great human beings together and interacting with each other. <3
Ofc you can relate to them in many ways, just because you know these feels, but that's different than a self-insert.
Btw, I don't even prefer romance as a genre, but as important sub-plot. It feels so unnatural, if no one falls ever in love or has a relationship etc...

Besides, a romance doesn't take years to develop. Months yes, years for some people maybe. You can't speak for all people on earth.
Also, I think platonic love and a deep friendship is the basis for a good romance. In many cases, it's not that important in what ways you love someone. You just do.
The lines between platonic and romantic love are blurring and the only difference between a really intense friendship and romantic love is the way you are looking at someone.

I don't think most romances in anime I've seen, actually focus on a platonic love as a starting base. They seem to always focus on that, "spark" which will dissapear within a year anyway (I linked the article in one of the above posts).
Like, I'm watching Ah My Goddess right now, and the MC's attraction to Belldandy primarily seems to be idolization, that "spark".

Maneki-Mew said:

That's what I mean by people confusing platonic attraction to actual romantic attraction.

The lines between platonic and romantic love are blurring and the only difference between a really intense friendship and romantic love is the way you are looking at someone.

But doesn't it take years to develop an intense platonic relationship?
Because a strong relationship is one where you have argued to a point where normally you'd end things off, but don't, have exposed your inner weaknesses to that person, and develop similar interests. That's how I became best friends with my, well, best friend.
Speaking from experience, every crush I've seen in anime, is really just hormone-driven, and a fantasy the character has stuck in their head.

5th grade romance leading to spouting bitter nonsense and generalizing, is this real life lol

Yeah, it's simply a cute thing to watch, can be fun or relaxing depending on how it's done, sometimes you want this over following a more complicated plot. It also works very well as a side thing to actual story, and most people seem to enjoy that, or at the very least not mind it, that's why it's so popular.

I like watching stuff like that, unless the parties are stupid/annoying like in most shoujo romance. Couldn't handle how retarded the characters are in Ao Haru Ride or Wolf Girl and the Black Prince.

I don't care if it's realistic or not. I love Shoujo Animes and most of them don't have realistic romance stories. They don't need to have something like these. I just want to be able to love the couples.

Tsurezure Children was fine and cute. I didn't mind it but most the couples were so, what's the word, awkwardly slow? Like the only two couples who were fun to watch were the comedy duo and the class rep / rebel girl because they actually kissed and tried getting to second base without too much dicking around.

It's mostly the fact that 90% of romance anime are building up to the confession / dating status and then you usually don't get time with them after that or if you do it's so painfully slow, I didn't read or really even watch Kimi ni Todoke but the fact that it took them 2 seasons to even confess and 71 chapters to even kiss sounds so nauseating.

I never mentioned anything about people being open about their sexual attraction. In fact, when people have a crush, they usually do everything to make sure their crush does NOT know that they are sexually attracted to them.

The couples I've spoken to in real life, they said that they fell for each other within less than a year because of their personalities.
Romance in anime doesn't usually seem to focus on whether two characters like each other for their personalities. The reasons usually are:

1) Spend time with them (no shit, you'll do that with everyone, but it's a step)
2) They're hot (sexual attraction ends after a year)

I can't think of any other reasons why romance in anime happens.

My girl friends usually watch romance anime because they want to fantasizes themselves as the girl MC of that anime. Since, the story usually fluffy which is the "ideal" kind of romance in life, and the Male MC usually a bishounen (which rarely exist around them.. Like me).

As for male, I only have one male friend IRL that loves romance anime.. When I asked why he liked it, he just said he liked how the fluffy-calming story in most on shoujo romance..

So.. Maybe that's the reason..

And people like romance for the fantasizing/self-inserting. Plus it generally leaves a good feeling for the viewers (granted it's done right). It's human nature to want to be loved after all.
What's your rush now? Everyone will have his day to die.

So romance in fiction creates this subconscious fantasy where the viewer self-inserts as one of the characters who are being loved, and that makes them feel good, because, well, living beings want to be loved.
Did I get that right?

Bruh, you think way too highly of humans. People fall in love for the most stupidest and frivolous of reasons.

For attractive people, the initial physical attraction catches your attention initially, just speak to them a few times are you're thinking of them constantly and when you ask them out (if the feeling is mutual) you'll eventually get to know them hanging out alone.

For people that you don't initially notice, you'll eventually see them doing something and take notice(though there are sometimes where you just can't see them as anything other than friends). Then the process from previous paragraph starts again

What complicated stuff are you expecting here? You mention time spent together, which is the same thing as getting to know someone's personality. Give me a scenario of a possible relationship development, and maybe we can access if that makes sense or if it's something that commonly happens.
I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

I agree with nearly everything you said. I don't actually think highly of humans. I think humans are a filthy race who will do anything if they are pressured by society.
But I think the people you are describing, they only think they're in love, but are actually not.

[b]This is what I would call a 100%, romance/b]:

Step 1: introduction:

Guy is a cynical asshole like Hachiman who hates girls.
Girl is cold, hostile-to-nearly-being violent-person who hates boys, because of her shitty background.
So naturally these two f*cking hate each other. The first time they meet, boy says sexist shit, girl threatens him.
BUT...their personalities are also similar.
Already, they have:

A) Seriously argued (key to falling in legit love and a long lasting relationship, because overcoming conflict and being familiar with someone, makes you more comfortable around them), something that romance in anime rarely seems to explore.

B) Become familiarized with each other by knowing their flaws beforehand.

C) Discovered their personalities are similar.

Step 2: Spending more time:

They try hanging out again. They start talking about similar interests, like video games, music. Then they get drunk, play Smash, and wholler like idiots. So now they've found what they like about each others' personalities

Step 3: Personnel stuff:

Weeks later after they've become good friends, they start talking about their insecurities. Normal things, like not knowing what job they want to get, being socially awkward, addiction to drugs.
