| P.A. Works has long been viewed as one of the “good” studios. Like Kyoto Animation and Sunrise, they treat their artists as people and are sympathetic towards the tough luck their younger employees face – as evident in their original projects Shirobako and Sakura Quest. But a new job posting has fans do a double-take. The studio is hiring new recruits for a Spring 2018 project, with starting pay at 770 yen ($6.75) an hour. Discounting overtime, a new recruit could earn 1.8 million yen ($15,790) before taxes. That’s a pretty terrible rate for animators. P.A. Works is located in Toyama Prefecture and set the pay at the 770 yen minimum wage for the area. Japanese fans have blasted the studio for offering less pay than McDonald’s (980 yen / $8.60 an hour) and convenience stores (920 yen / $8 an hour). That’s right, working on a potentially beloved anime for one of Japan’s favorite studios is financially less rewarding than food service. Even crazier is that P.A. Works’ pay is above average for the industry! Most animators only make 2 to 5 yen per drawing since most studios can’t afford to pay artists an hourly rate. The average animator only makes 1.1 million yen ($9,658) so P.A. Works’ wage is a step up from the competition. http://goboiano.com/p-a-works-now-pays-new-animators-22-less-than-mcdonalds/ this studios are making the animator shortage crisis worse lol |

| Hmm yikes, so in other words they get less money than the others by comparison? That sounds like just bad and compared to Puerto Rico salary when it comes to $ per hour. Imo at least. But yeah if this is true then its not really helping their case. |

This is something that has been going on for decades. Unemployment could be really high causing people to take what they can get. Maybe there is some prestige with being a animator and it looks good on a job application or resume for future places of employment. Maybe these animators are doing work for multiple studies at one time so the money evens out. Who knows why people are still working as animators today in Japan. As long wage that job is I am surprised there aren't animation sweatshop filled with illegal immigrants from China and other countries just mass producing animation.. |

| EVERYBODY needs to eat, but nobody NEEDS to watch anime. I'm not saying that its right to offer such low wages, and if the industry continues on like this it will collapse on itself, but the above statement is true. Corporate greed produces situations like this all over the world. Sell for the highest price possible, while paying workers as little as possible, to maximize profits for the top executives/shareholders. Their pockets are the only ones they care about filling. Its only when the well-spring of workers willing to work for that wage dries up, that they'll shell out a few more pennies to attract a new batch. Often, they'll cut costs elsewhere, usually at the expense of the employee in some other form, so that profits don't drop. I quit a job because of that. They gave us a raise, but at the same time they increased the employee's share of health insurance costs. What looked like a good deal for the employees on paper actually cost us money, because that raise only covered half the cost of the insurance increase. |
You're never too old to watch anime. If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead. I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime. Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language. |

I'll blame the industry first before the pirates. In my country people who work on McD had about 5-8 bucks salary in my country that's pretty much standard o think. Though all they need to do are pretty simple compared animators. Catalano said: I earn 310$ a month (in a poor country South-East Europe), I barely afford the internet to pirate anime. That's why I don't complain when I see bad animations. Congrats to the animators who keep their professionalism at such a low wage. I can feel sad story in your lives. Tell me if i am wrong. But that said i agree, i cant complain much about the anime. To be sure it's better to recruit rookie VA for middle tier to lower studio. Then keep the animation minimal but not that bad. Also even if anime dead, i kinda hope that every manga and ln got translated fully so i can buy the whole collection instead paying for overpriced BAD/DVD. Likewise though they should find a better way to make profit.. |

Unless I know the fact and information behind the studio and the industry i cant argue about it. | Seriously.... if animators get paid less than working at McDonald's, then GO! Boycott the industry ffs. What the heck are these animators sitting around with that kind of pay? We can criticise all we want from the outside, bottom line is, animators still choose to stay there and earn that pay rather than leaving the industry. Sure, maybe less anime will be created or all the animating jobs get outsourced, but I don't see how that's a bad thing for these animators because it will mean THEY GET PAID MORE to work in the service line. If animating is a passion for them, they could always do it as a hobby. No matter how much the animators complain or the consumers express their disgust, if the animators are still willing to work for that pay, why on earth would the studios be inclined pay animators any more? |

Kittens-kun said: inb4 people blame piracy for this... I would support anime, but there is absolutely no way of doing that. Even in USA all you can do is buy a blu-ray (which comes out months after the anime aired) or subscribe to a streaming service, that's it. Normal pricing policy, fast availability and good service - if they do that, only poor people that really can't afford anime would be okay with piracy. |

The current cg effects surpass a lot of the 2d animation from the original series in terms of conveying personality as well as making the dances more readable. If this is what cgi is capable of, then I welcome it with open arms. |

| Where I live the minimum wage is $10.85/hour ($8.5 in USD) and you can bet McDonalds isnt paying any more than that. Here an animator will earn around 4x as much as someone at McDonald's so that's the big difference. One of the problems is that in Japan animation is seen as the grunt work of the anime industry and instead of it being a good job in its own right its really only valuable for people to go into if they want to work their way up the ladder to become a director or producer. Miyazaki started out as an in-betweener. You should be able to make a living from a job you have to go to school for. |

| If the animators want higher pay, the companies will just outsource them. Anime is often just an advertisement for the source manga or light novel anyway; that's where all the real profit comes from. |
