Excellent episode, Erin looks much cooler with her hairs messed up....

So we learn a bit more about the Mist People and their way of life. To sum up, they come with the mist and go with the mist. Apparently, from what I understood, they are nomadic and certainly possess incredible medicine and knowledge on nature and beasts. However, they seems to be xenophobic of the outside world. Pretty mysterious tribe so I hope they play an important role in the future (after all, Erin is half Mist People)

Very well written scenario that really successfully portrayed the parents' love and how saddened they feel when their daughter marries and leave the village. This reminds me that in the past eras, girls who marries usually stay with their husband's family , some to never return ever again, effectively making the day when they leave their family the last day their parents will ever see them again. Thinking on this, I can't help but feel emotional when Soujuu received the hairpin from her father. Hope her parents' love will forever stay with her and she may achieve happiness in her new life.

Keep up the good job, two more of this kind of episode and I upgrade my ratings!

Next episode on egg thieves?

there is probably some reason like, they don't want to share their knowledge carelessly or whatever. it was a good episode but this show seems like it has a long way to go before it gets good.

This was a good episode, but I wasn't really all that entertained or engaged. We learned a lot, and I like that they introduced the idea of that girl being betrothed, and then they followed through with it in the next episode. I think that helps set the tone for some very solid storytelling, unlike Real Drive. I also didn't really get what that purple flower was there for...I thought it was the poison at first, then I thought it was the antidote, then it ended up being nothing really.

I'm really starting to dislike Erin's presumptuousness...it's this attitude that I really dislike in series skewed to a younger demographic. No one admonished her when she told them she talked to the patrolman. She could have easily been the cause of that girl's death, and no one batted an eye. This is a character flaw that I hope ends up being the cause of her mother's death later on so she can grow out of it.

I liked this episode, because you learn about Erin's parents a bit more, but similarly to what has all ready been mentioned, I didn't really get what the flower was for. The only kind of explanation I can think of, linking in with the wedding, is a girl blossoming into a woman, which was kind of explored when the bride was shown standing in a field of flowers. If I was going to go really far with that I'd say that she'd 'blossomed' and accepted her fate. I'm not sure why they kept showing it though :/ it annoyed me after a while.

I also agree with what has been said about Erin's presumptuousness. When I saw the bag of herbs, I thought it was poison. On that point, I don't think that the food poisoning was an honest mistake, I think that it was deliberate.

Some very interesting plot points have been raised in this episode and I can't wait to see where the next episode goes ^_^

I agree with what noteDhero said...it would be very interesting to a see Erin suffer for that, then heal and become more mature.

The last couple lines spoken in this episode made me sad. =( Erin-chan wants to stay with her mother forever....but we know how that's going to turn out. =/

pretty sure the flower was a representation of the girls feelings, thats why it turned towards the light that started to shine on it. since the the light represented her understanding of her father's love.

personally expected her mom to yell at her for not dressing warmer and the father to say something about her eavesdropping on the conversation about his daughter (not necessarily scold her, but to at least say something one way or the other).

either this story is being butchered, the acting/directing really sucks, or the base material really just wasn't that interesting. the dieing girl just didn't connect with me at all, i can't say i would have cared if the medicine hadn't gotten there in time except for the fact that we would have had to have seen flashbacks of Erin's grief over it for the rest of the series.

am i the only one that finds it hard to believe that they wouldn't have the antidote to that poison on hand if it looked that much like something that was edible? or at the very least have a quick and easy way to acquire it? and why the heck would the patrol man run away without tossing the medicine at her first? even if she had been there to follow him it would have slowed her down. and didn't her mom say that the people on patrol were allowed to interact with outsiders?

if this series doesn't get better soon i'm just going to drop it

I really enjoyed that episode. Every time we learn a little more about their circumstances and way of life.

The Kiri people really seem interesting to me. I liked the part where Erin went and got the medicine.

The way they kept showing that purple flower was out of place, though. And it was sad how that girl had to leave whether she wanted to or not. I don't like to think of her little sister missing her. ;_; It was like exile.

Very interesting episode where much background is revealed on both the Mist people, the meeting of Erin's parents and the matrimonial traditions of this imaginary world.

I wonder, however, if anyone else was angry or annoyed because of the fact that the young girl (Soju) is being forced into marrying a man she doesn't love (or even know!) and that NOBODY seems to care!?

Why does Erin have to shoulder every burden? I find that quite off-putting and it leaves me with a weird feeling. Every episode does this to me.

I understand that her mother couldn't leave the sick girl's bedside but one of the girl's parents could have gone and checked for the medicine.

The mist overseer almost fled from Erin. If he did then Soju would have died. But it's not like anyone told her the Mist people were xenophobic so she couldn't have known the guy would run away.

Can't really call that Xenophobic since Erin is the spitting image of a mist tribe member . . .

Anyways, I kind of hope they spend some time covering the mist people in more depth, they actually seem pretty interesting, more interesting than the Grand Duke and Queen's country, whatever name it is called.

Okay so why is it that its always up to Erin's mom to fix every screw up in the village and then if she fails, she'll be kicked out or killed?

Then there's the constant racism she faces on a normal basis too...

I think she isn't under threat from being kicked out or killed in this episode, as it's about a humanbeing rather than a touda. Though most likely it's said as a warning of severity, that this has to happen, and that in a sense, he's leaving it to her.

Erin almost got someone killed yet again and it's only been 4 episodes. How did you expect the overseer to react after finding some kid inside the hidden spot where they trade/communicate with outsiders? That's some sketchy shit right there.

Also, why do the townspeople rely on Soyon when someone falls ill? She specializes in taking care of the creatures/toudas which makes her like a veterinarian, not a doctor. Do they not have a doctor for the village? Sounds pretty ridiculous especially since it's such an important place which is tasked with breeding Toudas for the duke's army.

Because they acknowledge her expertise.
Soyon also knows how to cure humans, Erin even said that she doesen't only want to be able to cure Toudas but aslo humans like her mother. They have a doctor Soyon, also there is another guy don't remember his name that is also a vet and seemed to be also knowledgeable about plants and diseases tho not as good as Soyon.

Also back in the days it used to be quite comon to have only one doctor that took care both of humans and animals especially in a small vilage like this one.

No wonder Erin is so cute, her father was as handsome as her mother is beautiful. I loved the flashback about their meeting, and how Erin learned a bit more about the customs and way of living of the mist folk.

Soju's side story was also nice, at first I thought she wasn't up for the marriage because of her husband-to-be or something, but then we find out that she was just scared at the prospect of a new life. far away of those she holds dear. I loved her little talk with Soyon and the hairpin her dad made for her.

The overseer looked a bit surprised
Probably he didn't expect a Mist child to appear

Really want to know why Mist people are despised.. We'll learn about that soon I guess?

Forced to marry into another village, probably not allowed to go back
That seems really harsh, but then everything about this anime is pretty harsh
Sometimes arranged marriage could lead into happy life, not 100% depends on the people
I hope she can lead a happy life
Who knows? We'll probably never meet her again

I'm interested in the Mist People. I hope we learn more about them and their relationship or lack thereof with the people of Ake and beyond.

Nice episode. Each episode has Erin being the saviour of a sudden dilemma in order to appeal to the kids who are watching. It doesn't bother me too much but it's getting old. Still I liked this episode more than the other one.

I know that Erin is innocent and good hearted. But her actions are putting people in danger, and that's really bothering me. I am not angry at her since she is clearly naive and full of idealism, but I am angry at Soyon for letting her do things like that. She just acts as if Erin constantly being reckless isn't that much of a bad thing since she always does that out of good attention, but good intentions don't make it any less dangerous for herself and for the people around her.
And come on, it's not as if she was a toddler, she is 10 ! If her mother raised her correctly, she would already know not to do stuff like this by now.
I really hope, as people above said, that something will happen that will make her grow out of this. Because for now, the show depicting this behaviour as something good is really starting to annoy me.

Aside from that, the scene with the girl realizing her dad's love was very heartwarming, I loved it.

Another okay little episode. Liked the showcase of matrimonial traditions and culture building in general in this episode to go along with the chaos, as well as some additional storytelling regarding the Mist People and how Erin's parents met each other too. Congrats to Soju though, and hope she has a good life in the show outside the village after leaving her parents and the other people in the village to be with her spouse from now on in her new journey.

So I’ve seen some people here referring to this show as a “children’s anime” and honestly I don’t see how. Discounting the fact that the rating is PG-13 and the manga was serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Sirius – which is aimed at ages 16-21 according to Wikipedia – that ear-web snipping scene was far too traumatizing to be included in a novel for kids. Honestly it eerily reminded me of how we neuter/spay pets which is almost as terrifying of a concept – but at least our furry friends are under anesthetic. This universe clearly doesn’t have painkillers for the Touda… so they’re just subjected to this medical procedure and forced to bear the pain. Adding on the fact that Lulu is so fucking adorable and I would legitimately die to protect her (although something tells me that later on, she’ll end up dying protecting Erin), seeing her absolutely petrified expression made me want to scream and I actually choked up when Erin cried too. Erin is such a good girl and is willing to do anything to prevent others from suffering. I have a bad feeling that she’ll be forced to realize multiple times throughout this story that there’s not always an answer – not always something she could do, which will definitely cause her to feel helpless.
Thus far I can definitely feel how significant the worldbuilding will be to the story as a whole. The plot is progressing very slowly, but we’re getting an indirect look at how their society works and slowly receiving more and more information that once again can be inferred from conversations and context clues. We’re also getting a better grasp of the cast of characters, what their views and feelings on each other are, and how they are as people – both the good and the bad. Ultimately, so far I really love this pacing. Even though it is episodic – which usually I’m not the biggest fan of – the stories so far in each episode have been pretty gripping and we can easily see the continuity from one to the next. Unlike some other stories where events happen and are never discussed again and don’t really seem to have an impact on the cast, we can clearly tell how Erin’s view of her society and the world is steadily being shifted. I continue to love this show and it’s going to be very hard for me to hold myself back from binge-watching, especially when the plot picks up. After three episodes I generally have a good grasp on whether or not a show will have a shot at cracking my all-time favorites, and this definitely has a good chance!
