The illustrator of Shoji Gatoh's Full Metal Panic! light novel series, Douji Shiki, revealed on Wednesday that the first season of its anime adaptation will receive a "director's cut" edition, which will span for three films. The announcement does not specify whether or not the films will contain new scenes.

Full Metal Panic! was published in 12 volumes by Fujimi Shobo between 1998 and 2011. The first season, produced by Gonzo, aired in Winter 2002 for 24 episodes, followed by a 12-episode side story adapting the short story collection in Summer 2003, and the 13-episode second season by Kyoto Animation in Summer 2005. A new anime adaptation titled Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory will be produced by Xebec and is scheduled to air in Spring 2018.

I think they can adapt whole 24 episode into three flim but they will likely to cut off comedy episodes, which is also one of the charm of this show :\

GONZO's series was fine even if it left out a lot of the comedy antics past the introductory episodes. Re-adapting those three stories (I guess) into three movies by cutting out even more of this ingredient will make it look and sound like mecha "highschoolers conspiration number Xnth".
I suppose it's done to "test" out the waters and ignite a new clients pool for the upcoming series. The problem is the potential lack of success leading to a botched or cancelled Victory.

@starkfish Me too, since the last novels never reached America.

I'm glad to see Full Metal Panic getting more attention and I hope the remakes do really well similar to the Initial D movies which recapped that first season. I thoroughly enjoyed Invisible Victory and hope they'll continue to finish the story after these movies so some of us aging fans can see the journey conclude (hopefully with a very satisfying ending).
