huge lack of respectable female protagonists or heroines in anime?

There is a HUGE amount of female characters who are just archetypes (anything that ends in "dere" these days), Moe blobs, cute for the sake of being cute, very generic, bland, needs to be "protected" and only there for fan service induced cancer instead of actual respectable mentally strong/have their own ideals which isn't something like "Kirito-sama!". (btw the list goes on) basically anything otaku bait. I am no feminist by today's definition but can we have someone like Shirayuki(snow white with red hair), Caska during gold age arc(berserk) or in non-animemovie some like Katniss Everdeen(from hunger games) or Beatrice Prior(from divergant).

It really saddens me when the top 50 most popular anime on MAL does not have a single main female lead that isn't otaku bait, bland love interest, female archetype or just a fanservice female model(I challenge you on that btw). even though its not in the top 50 most popular look at seven deadly sins as an example. Elizabeth is a bland fan service model who pretends to have her own ideals but in reality gathering the sins is an excuse to be with meliodas-sama(at least she does not take the goal seriously imo) and a 1 dimensional love interest. nothing respectable in the least. the same with diane "Meliodas-sama" and fanservice model love interest with no real ideals of her own.

What I am trying to say is that I can like these characters but I cannot respect these characters. Is there any prevalent respectable female characters in anime with their own ideals and why is this a very unpopular trend in anime fans?

I mean there are some (take Yona, Nana or Ryougi Shiki for example) but yeah for the most part anime girls can get away with just being cute and/or sexy whereas guys can't. Hence with about 90% of my 200+ favorite characters are girls

I'm pretty sure almost all of the female leads in Miyazaki's Ghibli movies are very respectable characters. There's also the Major from GiTS, Yona from Akatsuki no Yona.

I don't get it why you can like those characters but not respect them. Why do you want to respect them?? And what's wrong with them being otaku bait?

Why is this is an unpopular trend in anime? Because we don't really care much about respecting characters. We just want to love them. Sure, once in a moon, there will come a character that we will love and respect but, those characters are very few and far in between.

PS- Watch better anime. Git gud.

Frankly, your "very generic, bland" part is what is tripping you up. Being respectable and cool means not having major personality flaws and keeping the rest of them in check. Which means "bland" to those short-sighted people who are used to mad psycho characters.

So, I open the top 50 characters. The first female one I see is still Makise Kurisu the scientist. Totally respectable, unless something happens in the parts of Steins;Gate I have not seen yet.
The second one is Gasai Yuno. Mentally strong (for a certain value of strong), knows what she wants (which is Yukki) and stops at nothing to get it.
Next is Aisaka Taiga. Cute fierce girl, I guess few people would respect her.
I skip Senjougahara Hitagi because I have not seen her.
Holo the Wise Wolf. She isn't called "wise" for no reason, but ideals is not something she deals in.
Saber. This is the girl who provides all the idealism you wanted to see. Also, badass.
I skip Ackerman, Mikasa because I have not seen her too.
Suzumiya Haruhi - the archvillain of the series, who seeks to impose her will on the universe.
Yuuki Asuna - while she occasionally needs to be protected, her mental strength is admirable, and she helps a lot of people in turn.
I skip Rem because I have not seen her too.
Akemi Homura - another one of those who fight for love like Gasai Yuno.
Izumi, Konata - cute otaku girl. Doesn't need protection or mental strength because she is in a comedy series, and the source of much comedy.
I skip C.C. because I have not seen her too.
I skip Oshino, Shinobu because I have not seen her too.
Scarlet Erza - not sure about her ideals, but strength is something she's got enough of.

Overall, I think your statement is unjustified.

Frankly, there are few male leads I can respect too. Most of them are the "protect the status quo / my friends" type.

My Hero Academia has a great female cast imo, with outstanding individual characters, definitely noteable.

Other than that we have Mikasa from Attack on Titan, everyone who has seen the latest episode knows she kicks ass(even before she was great).

Then we got Nina from Shingeki no Bahamaut Virgin Soul, I also don't think that she falls into one of your mentioned categories.

These are just a few examples of the current season, you see not all females are portrayed in a "negative" way.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

I agree. Most anime tend to have very bland, insignicant and generic female characters and most of the time they are just there for fanservice and viewbait. Sadly, it works. I am actually quite guilty of watching shows just because the female characters look aesthetically pleasing or because the cover art is good.

Its true that Japan seems to have a harder time writing complex female characters compared to male ones, but that doesnt mean there arent any at all.

This statement is correct but you should never blame the industry, always the fans - they are the ones really dictating the trends and what gets made.

Well, if you look at his full list, you will find he watched a number of better anime with better female characters.
But still likes battle shounen for some reason. Which is a genre notably devoid of good female characters. (and low on female characters in general).

But in the end, it's all about his criteria. I'm sure he underrated Ryou-tas.

Look at Akagami no Shirayuki-hime as another example.

Shirayuki is a bland self-insert shoujo protagonist who pretends to have her own goals but in reality becoming a herbalist is an excuse to hook up with Zen, and is a boring overdone mary sue love interest. (At least she doesn't really pretend to take her independence seriously imo.) Nothing titillating in the least. The same with Zen "Shiryuki!" the copy-past ouji-sama love-interest pining after our heroine who has no real agency of his own.

What I'm saying is that I respect these tropes but am a discerning viewer, and I thus feel guilty when I realise I'm part of the anime problem.

There are decent female characters out there. Unfortunately the industry is male dominated and it was thought for many years that females were only interested in love stories, tragic or otherwise. You also have to take in the culture aspect. Women in Japan were meant to be subservient and have an male imposed image of how they should behave and even speak. Things are progressing though.
The overwhelming increase in fan service is down to cold hard cash. The reality is that there is a long standing male audience. The need to give the fans what they want sometimes over rides what could have been a great story, "mumbles though gritted teeth* High School of the Dead is a good example of an anime drowning in a sea of fan service. I'll watch romance stuff very occasionally as i find it slow paced and most stories have totally unrealistic characters, i prefer psychological, action, horror mystery, political, comedy etc genres.
The increase in god awful annoyingly violent and verbally abusive female characters, when a situation doesn't warrant it is my pet peeve. Maybe most writers are going through a 'Domination and Pain' fetish at the moment. Before i get slapped with a feminist label. I know us women are capable of violence and verbal abuse. But the scenarios in some anime look more like torture porn and as i said before totally uncalled for. I may have done a quick knee to the happy sac or the old faithful 'grab and twist' or been verbally abusive, but only if the situation really required such action.
In the end, if you require an anime with a solid female character/characters, then you may have to put pen to paper yourself for the time being. There is hope for the future. Writers are becoming more aware that they have a strong female fan base that is steadily growing larger and that money can be made from us too.

@Kenna_Pyralis
My brothers room mate said there is now a Female Hentai writer. Maybe not a strong anime character and not what your thread is about. But hell.....A female that has managed to infiltrate what is a totally male dominated genre obviously has strength of character and the conviction in her ability to enter this field, is a Hero in my eyes.

Let's see.
Steins;Gate has Makise Kurisu as main female lead, and she is quite respectable, as I have said in the "top 50 characters" overview.
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi is a Ghibli anime, meaning that the protagonist is a moe girl who manages to overcome all difficulties that stand in her way.
Ditto for Mononoke Hime, except with more bloodshed and conflict.
Cowboy Bebop has Faye Valentine, and although I have never seen that anime, I am sure you americans love every aspect of it, so she must be a strong female character.
Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki makes feminists squee, if I remember right.
Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu has the female lead wrest away control over the world from an evil god.
Fate/Zero stars Saber, and I have already told you she is the best.
And Kara no Kyoukai stars Ryougi Shiki, everybody's favorite serial killer.

Overall in anime, the females are just there for the love interest or to progress the story through a struggle in relationship, there really hasn't been a respectful female protagonist, I mean yes there have been series where the female characters were more powerful than the MC who is normally a male but then later in the series we suddenly see that the MC is super open being able to destroy everything etc

How is San from Mononokehime a love interest, archetype or fanservice model?
Same goes for Chihiro from Spirited Away. Ghibli isn't particularly well known for their amazing female leads for no reason.
I definitely don't see how Hana & Yuki from Wolf Children fit into any of these categories either.
And calling Faye Valentine bland or a fanservice model is something I even find offensive as she's one of my favorite female characters in all of anime.

So yeah, challenge accepted and challenge won :>

Claymore is good. The manga is way better.
In my knowledge, it's the only fighting manga ever published in Weekly Shounen Jump with a female lead.
The Claymore women basically don't engage in any performative activity relating to "traditional" female gender roles - maternal, romantic, sexual, physical weakness (the strongest female warriors are categorically stronger than the males).

I don't know what anime you are watching, but there as many great female characters as male ones and there a plenty of stereotypical or just unlikeable male characters as well.

Well, I liked ...
Youko from Juuni Kokki (she has a great development, many layers and I like her)
Yona from Akatsuki no Yona (same as Youko, plus, she's badass and so cute)
Mikasa from Attack on Titan (badass, loyal, great character) ... and Ymir. And Christa. And POTATO GIRL.
Bishamon from Noragami (she comes off as one-dimensional in he first season, wait for the second one, she has her reasons and she is a great character)
Hiyori from Noragami (she's a bit Tsundere for the comedy scenes, but she's very grown up and great person)
San from Mononoke Hime (that example speaks for itself XD)
Mimi from Digimon Tri (she's very strong, altough she seems stereotypical on the first sight.)
Kikyo from Inuyasha (I know, many people don't like her, but I think she is a great female character with her own resasons to act how she acts and well..)
Shinoa from Owari no Seraph (I didn't know what to think about her at first either, but I get used to her and yeah, I have to admit, she is a good female character and I like her)
Kaori from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (very passionate about her profession and cute)
Saki from Shinsekai Yori (I thought she's a little bit boring, but I don't think she's bad-written)
etc...

And what is a respectable female character?
Not everyone has to be a real badass. People can be strong mentally too. If people care for others, can handle with a disaster in their life and deal with complicated situations etc.. that's are even more important than combat-strength imo.
Btw, I really deteste it, when female characters aren't allowed to be feminine. They can be feminine and not a moe-stereotype at the same time.

I do not mind them be sexualised otherwise I would not be an anime fan but in anime there is a huge gap in the majority in respectable male characters and respectable female characters who are not just archetypes and yell something like "kirito-sama!" who are not always/only after the D

Majority of the times these characters come from shit LNs which were written by 'authors' with the mentality and comprehensibility of 12-year-old school-kids. Furthermore, majority of these 'authors' aren't what you'd call 'Socially Intelligent', they lack the comprehension of writing a 3 dimensional character and a female one for that matter.

Whilst on the other hand it's much more easier for these 'authors' to connect with their 'Otaku' audience due themselves have limited social interaction with the opposite sex.

PoeticJustice said:

That's not what the original poster intended. He does mention that he hates the "fan service female model" though his original implication was that he doesn't care as-long as they're well-written. It's not that he doesn't "respect a woman" (Why did you mention Women? We're talking about characters) as you've stated, it's quite the opposite. I'm pretty sure that the OP would enjoy seeing a sexualised character as long as they don't look like a "Moe blob" and more like an actual person.

To iterate my point from a different perspective, It's extremely difficult creating a beautiful character such as Faye Valentine whilst maintaining an equilibrium for success. Moreover, these types of characters pander towards more 'mature' audience which is a minority when compared to the cesspool of the 'Otakus'.

Although I answered your rant earlier with my own perspective, I wish to go into more detail about why you won't see characters like these in a large percentile amount. To understand my point first you'd have to imagine the best looking female you could think of, seems easy right. It's not. I've been planning a Novel and potentially series for the past year and a half. What I can tell you is that I've been toiling over trying to visualize a female protagonist. Being biased here I think my character is well-above any female seen in the industry, despite this, implementing her into the story will be a herculean task and one which could ruin the entire project I've been working on over the past year.

You act as if anime has a bad issue with casting female heroines. Have you even seen western media? Not only do they not cast females as heroines often but most are trash conveying nothing but low voiced characterization and fanservice. Low voiced characterization, what is that good for? Faux-melodrama and try-hard badassery?

Think about it, Anime's heroines often display far more human and feminine characteristics, and yes, they're actually roles instead of almost eliminated like western media.

Look at the female cosplayers, TONS of females identify with anime female characters and that's a fact. Far more girls are identifying with anime than anything western.

Besides if I were to list anything anime off the top of my head all I can find are good heroines: Saber, Mikasa, Asuna, and those are just starters. It seems to me your problem is two-fold. Not only do you watch shit anime but you have a shit non-sensical opinion.
