I know a lot of females who are into yuri, it just seems less embarrassing in comparison to males who openly admit that they are into yaoi.

Lol that is bullshit.

When women don't like yuri, it's fine.
When men don't like yaoi, it is fine.
Unless they make a homophobic statement, they are not homophobic. And nobody sane would accuse them of being homophobic.

However sometimes, when I see a guy saying, I do not like yaoi. They do not say just, I do not like yaoi, they say it in a way that is insulting gay people. Which is why some guys that do not like yaoi, are flagged as homophobic.

Those that are the loudest about their dislike of yaoi, are usually homophobic.

As far as I know, women are less shy to show public affection (hugging, kissing...) for another one than men. I have also seen a lot of women who seems to like or tolerate yuri more than men tolerating or liking yaoi.

But I'm no expert, so my opinion may be bullshit.

Yup that's true... I've never have contact with someone who is male and like yaoi but that's totally different than females and yuri

Yuri is a little bit more appealing in some places because it's more relatable. I mean, shoujo ai aka girl x girl action in anime. Heh. Yaoi or Shounen ai is something that I personally am not a big fan of, I've seen some stuff, and I have enjoyed just a tiny bit of yaoi. I'm more of a crackship person which may be why I don't really find myself watching Yaoi or Yuri that much.

if she was lesbian or bi i think especially if it was yuri hentai if it was shoujo ai also to enjoy it she must be a little bit attracted to girls at the very list like who will watch sakura trick for the plot
the same thing for guys and yaoi

I don't like Yuri in general, but I can live with a few explicit scenes. I really like Girls Love, but it depends on the personality and character designs of the girls. They have to be at least like 16 years old and look like that.

My all time favorite so far is a manhwa called Fluttering Feelings. Unfortunately, the artist fights against cancer and can't draw currently. I hope she gets better, regardless of her manhwa.
My second favorites are Citrus and What does the fox say. I didn't get that far in the second one atm, but it looks good and hey, they are grown up women, which makes it way, way, way more appealing than little girls with big eyes and unfeminine body shapes.

It depends on the content. If it's an expilicit scene and they don't like it: Completely fine.

If they nag about single characters being gay or just harmless kisses, then well... it's a kinda homophobic statement per se or at least to say, I always thought about it how childish it is, if older teenagers and adults can't cope with harmless kisses of same sex pairs etc. XD

Actually if you watch the first two shounen-ai OVAs ever it almost feels like one of the two guys is a girl. Plus considering they were made with all the classic shoujo flair possible.

But those were the 70s/ early 80s. Shounen-ai nowadays is really hard to enjoy if you're a straight guy I guess (not willing to give them much more of a chance myself). Also it appears to me that the subtext in older titles wasn't that much about homosexuality per se but rather that being a concealed way to hint at women's problems overall (creating a different product and style in the process that yeah, would still only appeal to females).

Responding to OP's question, I can understand why women would like titles like Utena in spite of having yuri undertones. It's again about the subtext. Sakura Trick on the other hand has two girls kissing all the time throughout the show without any particular purpose besides sugary fanservice. I see that as niche for an almost exclusively male audience as the majority of current shounen-ai titles are for its respective audience.

Oh do you think? Why? I think it gets better, if you compare with the 00's - 10's, and many of those animes with clearly or subtle Boys Love content relinquish dumb Ukes, who look like a girl etc...
My point is that both shoujo-ai and shounen-ai were born in the shoujo demographic. This guy is saying "yuri" so it's a bit harder to tell.

Even in that case, some shounen-ai were intended for male audiences. Like, I read Stop!! Hibari-kun! and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was mostly a parody for the romcoms of the 80s and a comedy, but they never made fun of the guy who was crossdressing, but rather of the reactions of the straight guy he was in love with and a whole yakuza subplot. I found his character and attitude commendable.

Also how yaoi as a term has another origin and opposed to the previous shounen-ai trend of the 70s, that was apparently quite "complicated" and dramatic, and so some mangakas in the 80s started "going straight for the juicy parts".

Admittedly though, I never went past 2-3 episodes of Junjou Romantica (that I started watching years ago without even paying attention to the fact it was a shounen-ai xD). I think that sort of series ows way more to the later trend, but at the same time I can't tell it's representative for the state of the genre nowadays. But it's a bad experience I can't forget before stepping into any current title. If anything there are series in past seasons some that have some strong bromances going on, and even if they're not gay at all you can see it's part of the appeal (Rakugo comes to mind).

@Aquamirror I know you are getting your fun but I have to intervene too.

Ok so When men don't like yaoi, it is fine right? Buuut this is not fine : I don't like yaoi because there are gay people.

Yaoi: is a Japanese genre of fictional media focusing on romantic or sexual relationships between male characters. Meaning gay couples.

So how come not liking yaoi is fine but not liking the main aspect of yaoi is not?

Try one of those:

This is a Class S yuri, meaning those ambiguous "spiritual love" stuffs. The Class S is as old as shōjo is, it was born in shōjo literature before the war with authors like Nobuko Yoshiya.
An example of a Class S anime would be Maria-sama ga miteru.

If you want a proper lesbian yuri in manga, ie a "modern yuri", you have to wait Shiroi Heya no Futari for the oldest one. And yeah, it's shōjo too anyway.

Oh okay, understand that. But the thing is: I don't know one single gay guy, who is into the bara genre, which is meant for gays. Well, I just know those, who think extremely masculinity is dissuasive as well, I guess. So I think the decent Boys Love nowadays isn't meant for girls / women / especially Fujishis only.

There are also straight guys, who like some BL-pairings, because they just like the characters... if they aren't so sensitive like some other straight men.
I have never seen a girl saying "ewww lesbians (will grab and molest and hit on me, when we get close)", neither about real bis/lesbians nor about fictional lesbian girls.
So, it's not the fault of a(n) (good / respectful towards the gay characters) anime with Boys Love content in the demographic statistic, if guys don't like it. The problem are some / a few sensitive straight men themselves, because the get offended by the solely prensence of non-straight man so easily and try to "protect" their manhood against them.

Most women just don't feel the need to protect their feminity against lesbians, because the aren't offended by their existence, presence or touches. So, it's way easier to make all girls and women, regardless of their own sexuality, to a target audience for Girls Love imo. They aren't creeped out by the idea of girls, who are close, because it's fairly normal for straight girls to cuddle as well. The step from cuddling to kissing isn't so big. And they don't mind so much, if their best female friends are straight, bi or gay. Most girls still don't mind hugging them.

... I made it through... like five episodes of Junjou Romantica and stopped after 15 minutes of Super Lovers. XD

I'm a girl and, personally, I really like shoujo-ai anime and manga, but not if they are also ecchi. Lesbian relationships exist outside of fiction and should be treated the same way as other relationships. They should not be fetishized and aimed towards men. Too many shoujo-ai anime are made by straight people for straight men which I find to be unacceptable and a disservice to lgbt people who hope to be actually represented in media. That being said, as a lgbt person myself I sometimes have to take whatever I can find that represents lesbian relationships, even if I am not the intended audience. The same thing goes for shonen-ai anime which is marketed to and fetishized by a large female audience. So yes, women like "yuri," and I think even more women would like "yuri" if the relationships were represented more realistically, and in a less fetishized and sexualized manner.

The issue is because anime tends to fetishizing things anyway, and are globally more oriented toward the male audience than the female one (but it's changing).

In manga, the yuri scene is more mixed, if not more oriented toward female.
If one day you want to try some manga, I invite you to read stuffs from Ebine Yamaji, especially Love my Life and Free Soul that are my fav' from that author. Or others manga like Moonlight Flowers, Pietà or Applause. Well, mature shōjo/josei yuri manga.

But honestly, homo people fetishize themselves a lot. For gay, look at bara production, the manga from Gengorou Tagame speak for themselves. For lesbian, for example there is the manga from Akiko Morishima like Hanjuku Joshi which are über-erotic too. One of her manga was made into an anime : Yuri Kuma Arashi. Even if it is made by a bisexual female author, it's very erotic and totally entice male audience.

Yeah this is pretty much my take on the whole matter. If I'm going to read about a same sex relationship I'd want it to be written how most other relationships are written. And if there are any anime or manga like that I'd be totes down for it. I've recently been reading one called Shimanami Tasogare about a gay guy though it ain't really about relationships at the moment, it's written as a quite realistic drama, and I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

That's definitely true, and I think that the markets for anime are changing somewhat.

I'm not very familiar with yuri manga, but I'll definitely look into some of the things you've mentioned. I did recently order a paperback copy of a shoujo-ai manga called Kase-san and Morning Glory which looks to be something I will enjoy.

I'm not really sure if I agree with homo people "fetishizing" themselves per say... I wouldn't that everything that involves sex is erotic either. I can really speak to your references as I have not seen them personally, but I think often, lgbt authors want to write about their own feelings and sexuality, but also want to make something that will, of course, make money.

I believe in some ways it is much more difficult to market anime towards women than it is to men, especially when making stories that do not include, to be frank, guys. The largest female audience for anime tends to be very different than the male audiences, which makes it hard to make sincere shoujo-ai anime that straight women would watch like any other romance anime.

It's not impossible to create good, non-sexualized anime that contains wlw relationships. Take Madoka Magica for example, which contains two different wlw relationships and contains little to no fanservice. The series was widely successful and beloved by both males and females. Unlike most wlw anime, the romances in the show weren't the main focus which could be why the anime was able to "get away with it."

Additionally, manga that have taken a more sincere approach on wlw relationships such as My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness, have been widely well received, and I hope that there is a bright future for manga and anime with lgbt themes.

I've recently been reading one called Shimanami Tasogare about a gay guy though it ain't really about relationships at the moment, it's written as a quite realistic drama, and I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

Exactly! Just give me realistic lesbian romances!!!

This can be a good topic , well i've actually seen a couple girls that like Yuri , but yaoi more , since their Unraveled taste for anime males and obsession.

Well...I don't have anything against Yuri but I would prefer Shoujo-Ai.I'm more into Shounen-Ai and Yaoi.
I like Shoujo-Ai and Yuri but not that much.

I will not believe that everything is controlled by fate.

Yep, as much as I like both yuri and yaoi, I like yuri more. So far, I only know one girl my age irl who likes yuri too.
