No, but it has improved my ability to grasp the essential meaning of the sentence by just recognizing the main words.

If you want to learn Japanese then go to learning sites to take it step by step. It ain't nothing hard just needs commitment and patience.

No you don't. You can't learn any language just by watching stuff in it, not only Japanese. Reading raw manga will help your nip, but you need to know grammar. Anime might only improve your listening skills but that's it.

Thanks to anime my Japanese speaking skills are now more elite than that of a Japanese poet.

50% for me.

I have learnt some Japanese words and it's meaning but not how to use it properly in a sentence; when communicating and writing. So, in other words, I know the words but don't know how to use them grammatically correct.

Also, some of the words I learned aren't even the right translation.

I will some day learn more once I got the time.

Not possible to learn Japanese only via anime. Grammar is essential in this case.
Reading manga will help you much more.

that's all i need to know

but the best starting point to learn any language is by actually studying it and use anime as a complementary learning tool

Only words like NANI, haihai, HONTI NI, NISSAN ONICHAN SUGOI!!! SHISOU!!!, yokata, honkai, baka , kono hentai, sugimase , mate and so in but learning the language by watching anime alone is absolutely impossible, theres more to it than just that(can't form sentences, etc)

I only know the bare basic words that are very common in anime. I'm not that interested in trying to master the language or learn how to speak somewhat fluently.

Basically what everybody else wrote, but I wont call it "50%", seriously, its not even 1%. So my answer is "No". But I still plan to learn it someday. I probably would have already started if Japanese would use the Latin/Roman alphabet, but we all know it doesnt. ^^

Learn a language in the way you hope to use it. Even watching 1000 hours of anime won't give you enough understanding of the language to have a conversation or work at McDonald's. However, it can help you understand raw anime so if that's what you want then it's helpful.

I have been learning Japanese for the last 9 months. I've been watching anime longer than that - more than 14 years.
All I can say is that watching anime for 14 years paid off. Because when I started learning Japanese, I already had a lot of vocab covered. So I already knew words that almost no one in my class have ever heard. I guess it helped me show off a bit ( ͡ ͜ʖ ͡ )
Anime doesn't help with learning Hiragana or Katakana or kanji (unless you've already learnt kanji) or even grammar patterns. But it's a great way to learn new words.
I used to watch anime because it's a passionate hobby of mine, but now I use it as a supplement for my Japanese studies.

So yes, you can use anime to learn Japanese, but only as a supplement.

It could help you to recognize some popular words with their meanings and that is there to it. Trying to learn Japanese (arguably one of the hardest languages to master) from anime is nothing but an exercise in futility to me. I am not interested to learn it right now whatsoever but if I am predetermined in doing it I will give a way lot more effort than just doing that.

It's not torture to me. Besides, I've never liked subtitles and I'd prefer to hear things in my native tongue

Yes, I only had to study some basics years ago and on top of that just watch hours and hours of subbed anime. Now I can watch an unsubbed episode and understand most of it, or at least well enough to know what's going on. Untranslated manga/doujinshi scans are great for learning too. The more I read the more kanji I know by heart and the less I have to look up from the dictionary.

Affirmative. It was the original incentive. Afterwards comes learning basic Japanese grammar and sentence structure in order to expand your lexicon as much as possible. Later on, you meet a Japanese person and realize that "Orokamono! Kisama ni ha makeruwake ikan zo!! Shōbu da!! " is Anime vernacular and cringe inside of a black hole.

I knew I was gonna mispell a lot of it, I don't really care what it properly spells as long as u get the point. You knew the words right? Then it ultimately adds to what I'm saying that it takes a lot more than learning a language solely just by watching an anime. Look here --> ( grammar, forming sentences, SPELLING.... etc)

I watched anime like for over 10+ years, I can speak(tested when I went to Japan, you just need courage) and listen to japanese. But grammar side you will need to learn personally.

There's more - like I picked up some basic sneak-insight into Japanese phonetics. Also how their manner of speaking has breathing (exhaling) involved a different way than in the languages I actually speak.
Or also about Aizuchi.

And some other stuff I can't remember right now, plus likely some stuff I did not even notice (yet).

It can teach you very basic vocabulary based on exposure but not nearly enough to justify a 50% vote. But it's very unlikely to teach you grammar, formality, how to read, etc. Unless you mix some alternative learning at best you can guess the context of something based on how many times you've heard it with the accompaniment of the on-screen images.
I went to school to work on the rest and generally formal training is probably the way to go but that can very depending on how in-depth you plan to pursue it. Or cost and location are probably factors.

To make it sound a bit more epic, I learnt Japanese on the streets of Osaka. That was before I even got into anime. And I do not think watching anime helps in any significant way. You have to study and then you have to use it. That is the only way.

Yes you can lol. I learned english before i went to school without any preschool english classes(so basically from year 4-7 is when i learned it. at 7 we start school). How i learned it? Cartoons, games and regular usage in my every day life. Had straight A's in my english classes since grade 1 up until my 2nd year of highschool which is what i'm attending right now.

Watching is the key word. You have played games and used it regularly. Also you have actually attended English classes later on. The question was can you learn Japanese only by watching anime, not reading manga or playing JRPGs.

i recall watching a youtube video in which a polyglot is watching Psycho Pass for learning Japanese. i think it does help you to learn the laungage but it goes without saying only watching anime doesn't cover up everything. You need to read manga or play video games in that language to be able to read kanji and stuff.

It'll only help you recognize some words and their meanings but it won't teach you proper grammar which I think is the most difficult part of learning any language. I'm studying how to write/speak Japanese and while anime is a motivator, it won't teach you what you need.

Good thing is you can understand the memes about japanese words just by watching anime lol
