 A press release by Toei Animation revealed on Thursday that an anime film based on Go Nagai's Mazinger Z franchise is in production. Tentatively titled Gekijouban Mazinger Z, the film is commemorating the series' 45th anniversary. Toei Animation is producing the film, and Toei will be in charge of distribution. More information will be announced at the project's special stage event at AnimeJapan 2017 on March 26. Mazinger Z was serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump for 33 chapters between October 1972 and August 1973. A 92-episode TV anime adaptation by Toei Animation aired between Winter 1972 and Summer 1974. The series has inspired four TV anime, three OVA series, and several movies. | Awesome news, looking forward to it. People are completely right to criticize modern Toei though, they put out terrible quality in pretty much everything including their modern sequels to old IPs. Them animating the original adaptation is completely irrelevant. That said, I'm still excited to see it despite it likely being of low quality at least animation-wise and not feeling the movie format is a good fit for Mazinger. |
