Winners of 71st Mainichi Film Awards Announced

The winners for the 71st Annual Mainichi Film Award, hosted by the Mainichi Shimbun and Sports Nippon Shimbun were announced on Thursday.

Hideaki Anno and Shinji Haguchi's Shin Godzilla received the Best Film Award. It is the 31st film in Godzilla franchise and the 29th Godzilla film produced by Toho. Shin Godzilla premiered in Japan on July 29, 2016 and earned 8 billion yen, becoming the highest grossing live-action Japanese film of 2016.

Sunao Katabuchi's Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In This Corner of the World) won the Award of Excellence, along with the Ofuji Noburo Award. The film adapts the the manga drawn by Fumiyo Kouno. Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni premiered in Japan on November 12, 2016 and earned over 1.1 billion yen.

Mainichi's Best Animation Film Award went to Makoto Shinkai's Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.). It is the second highest grossing Japanese film and second highest grossing anime film in Japan. Kimi no Na wa. dominated box office for nine straight weekends.

The award ceremony will be held at Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall in Kawasaki, Kanagawa on February 15.

Best Supporting Actress: Mikako Ichikawa (Shin Godzilla)

Best Cinematography: Koichi Saito (64)
Best Art Direction: Yuji Hayashida, Eri Sakushima (Shin Godzilla)
Best Film Score: Kotringo (Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni)
Best Sound Recording: Mitrsugu Shiratori (Satoshi no Seishun)
