Can anyone dig deep, deep within their anime mindsets and think of the first example of a tsundere?

The closest thing to the first tsundere that I can come up with is Chi-chi from Dragon Ball. I'd say she's the mother of tsundere as Koji Kabuto is to badass.

I haven't seen enough older anime, but I think it's a safe bet Misty isn't the first one.

Think I saw one in the original Gundam, but I was probably seeing things.

I'm sure there had to have been an earlier instance of a tsundere than Misty, and maybe I didn't see enough of the original Dragon Ball, but Chichi really didn't seem like a tsundere. Again, only saw a little bit of Dragon Ball, so me being wrong is easily a possibility.

Earliest example I can think isn't from an anime, but I think Princess Leia's relationship with Han Solo in Star Wars Episode 4 seemed very tsundere-like.

...I believe I may have geeked out a little too much on that example.

it's not Misty

Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) was before Misty from Pokemon (1997)

Chichi is the definition of tsundere. She acts like a coldhearted bitch and then there's these subtle moments where she cares for Goku. I always despised her...

Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road is most likely the first modern tsundere.

To make this thread slightly more silly what would you consider the difference between a modern and classic tsundere?

The Tsundere Club has Urusei Yatsura (aired in 1981) listed, and one would assume the female lead is the tsundere in there.

I think a classic tsundere would be a girl shy and uncomfortable about expressing her feelings, releasing those feelings is misconstruing ways. A modern tsundere is more violent and bitchy by nature, to the point of abuse.

Witch is actually slowly changing. The most recent tsunderes we've seen; or tsundere esque characters take the idea of tsundere-in the shy lovehate relationship but do it in a more subtly nature.

It's hard to define modern in an artform-it changse to quickly. the question is like a very hard one to awnser.

'fraid not. The female lead (Lum) is the excessively overt and clingy type. It's one of the supporting ones ;-)

Also, I'm speaking of the original Uran, not the girly junker that we saw in the most recent adaptation.

If you ask me. Sayaka from Mazinger Z is the earliest tsundere I can think of. She had all the characteristics.

And Mazinger is what, from 75??

my first girlfriend back in high school would be the first tsundere I'd ever met...actually..she was just plain bitch but anyways..

..can't remember my very first tsundere in anime but one that does come to mind so many years back is Narusegawa from Love Hina. I'd say Fujiko Mine but she's in a class of her own.

the diff with tsundere's nowadays is that they try too hard making them cliche to the classics

I think my first tsundere was totally Sayaka Yumi from Mazinger Z.
She's the really prototype of modern tsundere... bitchy and cold at the start, and than she open more and more in the relationship with Koji.

But...hey... before mazinger there was DEVILMAN! XD
So the first is absolutely for me is Miki Makimura, she have a strong personality when Akira is a weak boy, but is loveable and gentle when he transform and take a stronger role for himself, defending her always.

Nagai, oh you!

Historically the first character to be called tsundere was Daikuuji Ayu from the excellent kimi ga nozomu eien in 2002.

AFAIK No character was recognised as such previous to her . So, even if there are now peoples to point out similar personality traits in older characters, the first tsundere is Ayu, and not an older character, as they only gained their "tsundere status" after Ayu.
Tsundere is an extension of the IRL behaviour of someone bullying the person he/she loves because he/she's too embarrassed to be honest with his/her feeling.
So if you're going to say that the "first tsundere" isn't defined by the first called tsundere but instead by the first character to have that same kind of behaviour before that, then we may have to go back to several hundred (thousands?) years old fiction stories to find that first character.
Which obviously is useless and fruitless.

So the first tsundere character is Daikuuji Ayu , QED.

Vegeta for the most part is tsundere towards Bulma.

But Vegeta x Bulma came in 1996 tho.

If this topic was an argument, you had totally won!

though My maybe should fall in that sub-group of small Tensai Tsundere! (compare Haruna of Zombie desu-ka)
Being smarter than all of Moominvalley combined, but totally loving them and a really good friend.

-----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
I honestly don't know, and even if, then they are not the earliest, but do the following fall under "tsundere" ?
Faye Valentine of Cowboy Bebop (1998)?
Natsume, Akiko of All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (1992)?

just curious.

Classic tsunderes are the kind of love interest that start their relationship badly, but warm up to the other person over time.
Modern tsunderes have a personality problem that causes them to rapidly change their apparent personality between good and bad, especially if any love interests are nearby.

You basement dwellers are giving dumb fuck anime creators an excuse to continue adding lazy character archetypes into their garbage shows. Instead of having genuine inspiration for a character to add to a story, neck beard anime makers will just go " heyyyy I'll just add a Tsundere to my show. Western weebs love Tsundere girls. I'll make $100000 off of my shit show. Gg nerds". This industry needs to die. Fuck.
