thats like being insecure about liking rock music or playing tennis like what the fuck it's just a harmless interest basically like comic books, everyone goes to see comic book movies now why should anyone feel alienated for liking Japanese comic book culture? Are people racist against Japanese culture?

I think anime is dope and can easily be the next cool thing, it's way cooler than the whole rap culture thing the mainstream keeps pushing

People often stereotype it as being either all battle shounen or all hentai. One is "mindless action for kids" and the other is "tentacle porn" (both of these are also stereotypes of these genres) and people tend not to want to be around people who like these things. People are often judgmental about things that they don't understand.

most people assume the audience for comic books/cartoons/etc is children. manga is made for a wide audience, but even in japan, typically the largest consumers of most mainstream manga are children. you're seen as childish, immature, or underdeveloped if you admit you like it without reserve to the average person. it's only logical that one would hide their interest, even if it happens that that perception is misguided. in fact, it's usually spot on if one freely shares their interest without determining the other person's stance or if their positive opinion is necessary.

If you have confidence you can make people like you tbh people that are judgmental like that are the most boring people so why would you even want to chill with them unless you're using them for their connections or some shit like I know a hot girl who likes anime and she's a good friend of mine she has friends who I don't know but they're cool I'm sure and like anime and shit i don't get it I've been jealous of dudes who love anime and have hot girls like its delusional to think anime is lame

Once you grew up, you realize that the world doesn't revolve around you. Actually, it's pretty weird to see someone ranting about anime IRL and even if they did, I just wouldn't care.

Being an adult doesn't mean you gotta be a boring jaded buisness man you can still be goofy and like fun shit like shonen or what not especially if it's a good story like fuck the haters man. Being black was the most uncool thing like 100 years ago but they turned it around and now they rule pop culture so like why can't anime people do that

It isn't anime they are insecure about, it's about "them". Being mostly kids and young adults, it's kind of expected.

About A year ago I was having lunch with some of my "friends" (In quotes because out of the four only one is an actually friend). Anyway another friend that I haven't seen in a year comes up to me during lunch and me wanting to start a conversation said, "Do you still watch Naruto Shippuden?"

He had an odd reaction as if he didn't want people to know, "No I don't watch that stuff anymore." Yet he actually still does.

The reactions of the people at my table that were directed towards me were, "You watch that shit?" "Man you need to stopping watching that." I told them, "Yeah I watch, what of it?" After that they continued on for a little while, then I nudged them off.

Oddly enough 4-5 months ago, The one @ the table who was my actual friend for over 4-5 years who said something along the lines of "I can't believe you watch that stuff." Indirectly admitted that he also watches Naruto (not the guy who said he stopped watching it), by me catching him watching it.

The funny thing was two kids in my class were watching Naruto S, and he was watching the from about arms length away from them. He knew everything that was going on. So I questioned him about why he knew pretty much most of the details of the series, he said "I used to watch it when I was really small so I know most of it." Right because some how knowing 2014 (Manga, 2015 anime) Material was "Really small"

He got caught up in his lies and I caught his ass. Finally he admits, and we talk about some naruto (Even though I'm not the biggest fan of the series), for like half an hour only to never talk about anime again.

So overall two friends who wanted to hide that they watch anime. However, when talking to people who are familiar with anime and are both fans of the medium they don't mind talking about it obviously.

Also someone better have read this wall of text I just wrote.

If you are wondering about me, I'm pretty open about it.

That's so retarded personally I'm pretty conceited so I'm the opposite if someone is like that I think they're stupid. I'd be like "Naruto is dope tho, why you trying to front and tell me Naruto ain't dope like you trying to judge me huh? Come here say it to my face"

Personally nobody has stigmatized me for watching anime, its not like their opinion is going to stop me from watching it. Just like if one of my vegetarian friends tells me not to eat a steak, i'll eat it. Nobody's words are going to affect my actions unless I let them

The way I see it , if I'm around friends It's fine with me so long as I can give them crap about their hobbies also . If you can't handle a joke from a friend then you aren't very good friends.Other than that why care what some random person thinks.

I agree with this its fine to roast each other but I would never like let someone treat me funny just because they know I like Naruto just like I wouldn't let someone treat me funny because I have blonde hair

As for me, I really don't let it bother me what others think about anime. Everyone in my family thinks it's dumb and wish I would just quit already and I'm the only one in my group of friends who likes it. At least I have my friends on MAL who I can talk about it with :)

Most of people don't like anime because they don't even know what it is. I know many people who've said to me oh you like those cartoons? Aren't they just for kids? What I do? Invite them over , grab some popcorn and show them a genre of anime they will like. Guess what, they might not watch it themselves like I do, but at least they understand why I love it, and friendship is about understanding one another.

There are very good reasons to be "insecure" about otaku-style interests in real life. I'm not sure if insecure would be the right word for it, but I do definitely hide my "powerlevel", I never tell people in real life that I like anime and doujin media because at best they would assume that I'm a weirdo, and at worst assume that I am a pedophile and call the police or even react violently (and the evidence doesn't matter in these situations, the accusation is what holds weight). Of course not everyone would be like this but enough people are to make it too risky to just tell everyone that I have these hobbies. This may sound like overreacting on my part, but just one look on social media websites if enough to show you that there are a lot of people who think that anime = child porn. So basically I only disclose my all of my hobbies to close friends.

However, people who are insecure on the internet should fuck off. On the internet there is unlimited space, and social stigmas do not apply. You can assume whatever identity you like, and change it at any time. There is no reason to hide behind a veil of insecurity on the internet, like some of those "ironic" weeaboos do and such,

The biggest problem is the impression the otaku culture has left: anime girl wallpapers, pillows, booby mousepad, ...

Yeah this is kinda the issue here, there's nothing wrong with owning such items, but a certain vocal minority of well... weeaboos has created a social stigma and a sterotype that all anime fans act like these weeaboos.

This has also contributed to the misconception some people have that anime = pedophilia, because of a vocal minority of lolicons who force their interests down others' throats and act like all anime is lolicon-stuff.

Until this sterotype blows over I will remain very cautious in who I decide to disclose my interests to.

I don't think the idea that anime = kiddie cartoons is the idea. Since the "geek culture" boom of 2007 various kids' cartoons have become very popular among adults in the west (stuff like Steven Universe, Adventure Time etc.) and it is perfectly acceptable to like them. It is just the idea that anime = porn that makes many triggered by the mention of anime.

then after about 2 years of college when i met other people who were open about it, i said fuck it.... why should i care?.... and watching youtubers who did ecchi and hentai reviews only helped my open up more.... now i'll say the word hentai or loli out loud in public where others can hear me and not give a damn

Hey OP. I get it, you're insecure about your tiny anime list. So you have to compensate by trying to show how compasionate you're, by loudly telling everyone that you're a passionate fan of the medium, even if you haven't even scratched the surface of the medium at all. Come back when you have watched over 40 days worth of anime, before making this kind of thread. You fucking tryhard.

When a person's interests are challenged or mocked it makes them feel like they are, and they're not wrong. What you do is an extension of yourself. Denying this just because you care less for external validation, or think you do, is just as 'petty'.

Well, teens and young adults tend to have adultness pretentions. One method of reinforcing an adult persona is to avoid stuff that can be perceived as juvenile or childish.
I've never really aspired to assimilating into the ranks of normalcy, but with each passing year I can't help but notice that I care even less than before. I'm too old to care, being well aware of what I really like and that I won't "grow up" as it were. Not saying that young people don't know anything about themselves; just saying that interests can really change with time, but this slows down considerably.

It's 'cus many people consider anime to a be a dweeb thing and/or something that's for kids.
Then those same people go and watch Transformers 4 and think it's a really good movie for "mature adults"
So yea with idiots like those around I get why some people feel insecure about watching anime.

Personally I stopped caring about it a long time ago. It's my choice of entertainment, so I don't really care about what other people think about it.
