According to a Facebook post by Adult Swim, the OVA series FLCL will be getting 12 new episodes on the Toonami programming block. These new episodes will be co-produced by Toonami and animation studio Production I.G. It will serve as a sequel and be split into two seasons (six episodes each) premiering in late 2017 or early 2018 on Adult Swim.

Production I.G announced last August that it had acquired the rights to the original FLCL series, which was created in conjunction with Gainax. In addition, it had plans for a remake and other related projects. The new series will be directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro with scripts written by Hideto Iwai and character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. FLCL director Kazuya Tsurumaki will serve as a supervisor for the new series.

A press release also revealed details about the upcoming new series.

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenage girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth?
What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota?
And where did the human-type robot Canti go?

The original series is about the story of a 12-year-old boy named Naota Nandaba living in the city of Mabase. His life changes one day by the arrival of Haruko Haruhara, a pink-haired female from outer space. Six episodes of the series were released on VHS and DVD between April 2000 to March 2001.

Looks like you can add another classic series for a comeback tour...seriously the amount of comeback shows these last couple of years have been truly astounding. i am not just talking about anime but also western animation and movies we have been getting a lot of classic franchises back lately.

This is not a complete surprise as i remember a post about a year ago they were thinking of reproducing more content for this series...looks like they actually decided to do it. we just have ot wait if this would be any good or even better than the original. i mean 15 years is a long gap for a new show.

Also this was partly possible actually due to western fandom..as stated by the article..you see..while rare even western audience fandom can have an impact for new anime season to come out.

FLCL is probably the last anime that comes to mind when thinking about series that need a sequel. It's easy to be skeptical and I am, but I won't right it off just yet.

Why?

Come on now, it was not popular in Japan where the sales matter.

FLCL is a modern classic and it really, REALLY doesn't need a sequel. The story is told: It's great, but done. Finished. There is literally no purpose to these sequels outside of milking a well-established old franchise.

So yeah: I will watch it, but I am very sceptical.

FLCL is an anime classic that will stand the test of time. It makes me nervous, as this could tarnish its reputation.

This has plenty of pros and cons. Pros are that The Pillows are back on board and the original creator and character designer are overseeing things. Cons are that Naota and Canti are not main characters.

Boy, I'm nervous.

Was not expecting this. I don't think it really needed any follow up, but I'm up for it. Even it it sounds too much like a rehash.

IIRC A new project was announced, but it wasn't made clear as to whether it was going to be a sequel or a remake or whatever and it is a little surprising that Toonami are funding 12 more episodes of FLCL.

It doesn't matter how popular FLCL is, it is the kind of story that doesn't need a sequel and now it is getting one? Is milking really that strong now? What's next to re-adapt from the classic?

Kinda surprised people aren't happy about this. Though there will be a lot of hype. Not to mention that many people seem to want the west catered to, yet they aren't at least happy about Toonami doing this.

Anyway. Might watch the original if I like the visual of the new series. I'm also interested if this will have just an English dub, or this is a Space Dandy like situation.

In all of my almost no time spent watching anime and browsing forums or otherwise have ever I seen people pining away after more FLCL... The show is complete and doesn't need anything else.
How to fix the review section, detailed here

The average reader (HS level) reads at about 200 WPM. So a 500-800 word review should take 3-5 minutes to read. That's an acceptable length for something you're interested in spending 25 minutes to 4.5 hours of your life watching.

Oh, and ANN requires any and all reviews to be 800-1200 words, no matter the length of the show.

Oh, so this it's actually legit.

It aired more or less 15 years ago, i just hope that they don't fucked it.

Weird, according to the "experts" of the medium that are on MAL (you know, the ones that would call you retarded if you ask for a third season of Spice & Wolf) , something that aired 15 years ago has zero chance the get a sequel. Weird.

Would I have liked FLCL to never end when watching? yes
Did it need more episodes? no

I thought the 6 we originally got were perfectly wrapped together in a small package wonder if the generation change will effect how this show is made? kinda hard to explain.

While I'm skeptical and FLCL certainly didn't need a sequel, I'm fucking excited. They plan to bring the Pillows back and key members of the staff are returning! It's going to be a long wait.

Wow, after reading this, I felt the same way I did three days ago, when I was told, a female version of "Ghost Busters" had been made and is hitting the theaters soon...appaled and dissapointed, whistl asking myself "Why, for the love of god, did they think that this would be a good idea?". Personally, I think FLCL does not need a sequel. I loved the show and I think it's perfect in it's own imperfect way. The ending may be open, but isn't it fine the way it is, what is there more to say?
And another thing I'm afraid of, is this ending up as a remake of the original with the difference in the main character being female...which is probably the main reason why I am so skeptical towards it - same old stuff, but through a female perspective?
Still I will watch it, like I will watch the above mentioned movie, which is probably going to be terrible (I watched the trailer and it is horrendous...according to my opinion at least)

I don't understand how this is 'milking' it... but hey, can't please everyone, right?
I myself look forward to this. Does it need a sequel? Not at all. Does that mean it shouldn't get one? Nope. I mean it's been quite a long time since the original. I think the idea of creating sequels for long forgotten shows is great. It gives you a chance to revisit characters that you may never get to see again, there's nothing wrong with that. I mean sure there's a good chance it could flop, but there's also a chance it could be great.

Kinda wierd how Eh people are about this, a Anime Studio is working with a Western TV Network, whatever you wanna call Toonami , to make a sequel to an Anime, that is unheard of apart from the Netflix thing done like a month ago. Pretty important shit. The fact that its FLCL too is incredible im so excited about this.
