They still do it with US Shonen Jump subscriptions too if I'm correct. It's a dirty, but effective strategy. |

NY Times does represent the whole country, the reason why the chart doesn't reflect what actually sells the most units is because it's what is being bought the most at one moment. Most of the chart you posted consists of volume 1s of series that released very long ago, people are buying those slowly but steadily so they don't have enough volumes sold at once to chart, with the exception being Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan as they are just that popular. |
