Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu for sure. But Grimgar and Konosuba are surprisingly good considering everyone expected them to be the usual generic LN adaptation. It's also funny how both shows are like the exact opposite of each other despite having the same premise. i.e., being thrown into an alternate world with RPGlike elements and struggling to survive. One is light hearted, carefree, comedic and the other is dead serious, dramatic and grim (ha), yet both are extremely enjoyable in their own way.

I would say Konosuba or Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, as they fit the definition of "dark horse" the most. I would like to say Ajin as well but it has been criminally underrated by the community thus far, and I only expect that to continue.

its between KonoSuba and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

I wasnt even expecting these to be any good considering they are both done by studio DEEN

Kono Suba - I thought it was just going to be another run in the trash generic LN adaptation, turns out it takes those tropes and it actually makes it into something that is quite enjoyable

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - This wasnt even on my PTW list, but everything else was, i thought considering i know absolutely nothing about rakugo, i still gave it a go as almost all the time i do, and i am glad i did watch it, one of the most underwatched shows of the season and definatley deserves more love. I even want to learn more about Rakugo.

Shouwa Gen

It's shows like these that pull me back into anime. I wish there were multiple offerings of its kind every season...

^This.

They have two great shows this season. And the next season DEEN have Sakamoto Desu ga?, so basically this year is Resurrection of DEEN.

hai to gensou no grimgar. everything looking down on it because LN adaptation, slow paced, and generic theme.

i like it because one of those rare LN faithful adaptation that not totaly rushed and actualy give spotlight to character.

grimgar is indeed great the way it spent the first episode by giving spotlight of how fat the character was is amazing

do you even chit chat in rest time? talking about one char being fat is prefectly normal. also looking about ranta personality, yes it gonna be like that. it's much better than 2 guys act like guy each other for trolling another party member.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is the best effort I've seen from DEEN in a long time (they didn't fuck up the animation!!!), and it has a unique concept behind it that I never would've thought I'd seen in anime. It's just a joy to watch in general, always leaves me giddy with many feels by the end of each episode.

I went into it kind of fearful that DEEN would somehow destroy the animation or story, thus far they have proved me wrong. Good job, DEEN. Good job.

Probably Dimension W later on, it has a pretty interesting premise although the loli android keeps getting in the way of things for me. From what I'm watching Assclass 2 is IMMENSELY better than anything else I'm watching. Grimgar is pretty boring and Kono suba isn't funny to me.

Could anyone explain to me why KonoSuba is considered a "dark horse" when it clearly does what it advertised itself to do: make dirty, immature jokes in a "comedic" setting?

On-topic, I would say personally, ERASED, as I was not at all interested in it before I watched the first episode. Though it has its faults, it's an anime I can enjoy, unlike a certain comedy fantasy shows that is far shallower than it.

because that is the purpose and they acchieve that. i don't see anything wrong with that. it's already on it premise.

Dagashi Kashi, so far for me has been the best anime of the season, keeping in mind I haven't seen Erased yet although that won't count for the dark horse of the season. Dagashi has just a good fun anime about sweets/snack items which has appealed very well to me. If I can't choose it as its currently in the top 5 for the season on site I use, then I'll go with Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu or Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm.

Although I don't have many choices since I've already dropped two this season (Musaigen no Phantom World and Cupid's Chocolates, granted the Cupid's Chocolate started kinda in Fall) and I'm considering droppng another two with Hai to Gensou no Grimgar and Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut.

Simple it's because it's done by Studio Deen, has the setting "transferred to another world" and is a pseudo harem. All of which are a recipe for an average at best anime, yet what we are getting is anything but.

The Konosuba love is catching me offguard, didn't think so many people would be into it. Maybe it's because the comedy induces more of a chuckle than a full on LOL for me, I just think it's okay, but darkhorse I can't go that far. It's a fun chill time watch though.

For me I would have to say either Konosuba or Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

After watching the first episode of Konosuba I wasn't expecting to like it much, but by episode 3 I was in love with the series. The biggest draw to it for me is that it'a harem anime, but it's not really an echhi anime which is a nice change of pace.

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju however, I was in love with from episode one. Going into the series I knew nothing about it or about rakugo in general. The pacing is a little slow, and it hasn't picked up much of an audience but all in all I think, for me at least, it'll be one of the more memorable shows this season

This is MAL. People dropped Maria the Virgin Witch episode one and shat on it's rating because there's a succubus in it.

Don't pay too much attention to the ratings, until at least a year after the show has aired. When the marathoners come they'll be able to appreciate the show for what it is, instead of getting offended by everything.

I was really enjoying Dimension W at first; it stood out as one of the top 5 for me in the first 1-2 episodes but since then my enjoyment of it has lessened each week.
I can't quite place my finger on why, though. It's just became very 'meh'.

In all fairness there are a lot of glaring issues with Grimgar. It's gotten better with the last two episodes but there were way too many problems with the first 4.
Lol@ a 7.57 rating being considered low. That's a good rating. The scale goes from 1 to 10, not 5 to 10.

i think grimgar gets a lot of shit from people because of the setting, people look at the whole MMORPG thing and come to the conclusion the show should be about an adventure with intense fighting and yadda yadda, but it ends up being more on the Slice of Life side of things.

I wouldn't say the pacing has changed, but the dialogue has improved somewhat. They're actually taking into account their dire situation and not spending half an episode talking about peeping on girls and all that other bullshit.
I mean, the female characters are actually getting some lines of dialogue now too.

But yeah, it's a little bit too soon to say whether it would be worth picking this back up again or not, but at the very least it's no longer fucking god-awful. It's became 'average' for me at the moment.

Dunno about other people, but my issues stem from the fact that the dialogue feels like it was written by a 12 year old. It's one thing to include the boring trope of peeking on girls and talking about whether they are fat or not, but it isn't believeable at all when you look at the context of it - they struggle to kill the weakest of mobs, they barely have enough money to eat or sleep anywhere, and they still have the issues of having lost half their memories.
When they're camping out in the wilderness wondering what they're going to have to do to get their next meal, you'd think they'd act just a little bit more mature. They don't really have time to get into heated debates and arguments when they're all starving to death.

Not to mention that because of the insane amount of time spent on juvenile conversations, the actually interesting parts of the story get glossed over. On the 4th episode where they go over what abilities everyone has, they just go down a list reading off who can do what, interruptng combat over and over again. If they hadn't spent quite literally 25-30 minutes of the previous three episodes talking about dumb shit, they could have used that time to instead introduce the Guild system in a better manner, showing us the abilities they were learning and putting them into practice.

It would have been so much better, IMO, to see them working together as a group to learn their abilities and overcome their problems. When they mapped out the surrounding area it was quite a monumental feat for them - it was showing that they were getting better and were able to handle bigger packs of goblins.
But they glossed over that in literally 60 seconds. We got given some shitty listing exposition about what they have learned and what they've done in the last X amount of time and that was that.

It just feels like the priorities of Grimgar are completely backwards.

Interesting, I guess I'll leave it for now then and see what people have to say about it when its done. Hope its moves along the story a bit faster since it seems like it could be a very interesting anime, but its just moving at a too slow a pace for me.
