Exactly my thoughts, that's why I think all the adults, especially Battler, with his turning table this, turning table that, sucked big time when they failed to notice the strangeness of Maria. You know what though, Ketuekigami, Higurashi does a much better job at setting tone in a serious, non-melodramatic way. That's something that Umineko totally lacks, and regardless on what fans of the games say, I don't see how that could be said about the shows. It's the third episode, and there is just a lot of tackiness in the execution of the show. By the third episode of Higurashi, didn't we have the
There's a marked difference in setting tone, introducing characters, and dealing with suspense that is absent in Umineko.

I personally don't know if it's an adaption problem since it seems that even those familiar with the story are split on that though, but I can say that the show suffers from having too large of a cast, and a production that wants to hearken to Higurashi too much. They make drawing comparisons far too easy with the bug eyes and camera angles similar to Higurashi.

I think it's totally fair to compare the two.

The problems you have are likely an adaptation problem. Since all the scenes that are being shown are normally spaced out with other calmer and maybe more explanatory scenes between them the dramatic scenes might be seen as forced, melodramatic, or tacky with their absence. That's one of the reasons many of the vn players said it was very rushed.

All I will say is that it will be near impossible for you to say this later. Theses two are far too different and i honestly can't bring up a valid argument to prove that since you have not been shown the true nature of Umineko yet. I don't want to argue about something in which i have all the information that i cannot divulge while you are missing that key information which significantly hinders your opinion. All that i want too say is that if this adaptation is handled as it should be, then starting or midway through episode 2 you should understand the true genius of the series.

So far it fails to creep the shit outta me like Higurashi did. But it's still good, I'm getting drawn in :)
Though there are too many Maria's expressions, it doesn't have the impact if they're doing it all the time.

Exactly. Higurashi had far worse animation and all but...I'm starting to think that maybe it actually HELPED setting the tone.

Slightly better than the last ep; still overrated as ever though. Op is nice. Let's see what the next ep brings and see if it can redeem itself.

The dramatic scene at the beginning with Shannon and that guy crying was really good, but it doesn't fit in an anime like this.

The thing is though, that I'm not talking about content. It's fairly obvious that this show doesn't have to do with some disease and blah, blah, blah that happens in Higurashi. They've already placed significant importance on the witch Beatrice, and they just barely mentioned some witch in the Higurashi Rei OVA. I'm just saying that in everyway that they've presented this show thus far (besides maybe the clock stuff) someone could intelligently (and not rashly) draw comparisons to Higurashi.

He is more referring to the way it is directed, how people are presented and how the story is told, I think, than he is to the story or anything like that. In which case it very much is like Higurashi.

Sideways angles! Speedlines! Sudden maniacness with odd faces! Bulging eyes! It is pretty much sensationalistic.

It really does not fit Umineko well. Higurashi was about paranoia, it benefited well, Umineko is about... urhhh.... Epistemology, or something. It would benefit from an earthier, less sensationalist portrayal of everything. A more human look at things.

(Also, a 360 degree turn would take it back to where it started out, since it is a full circle.)

Yes. I think if they had used the chessboard metaphor in a much broader sense with the clock stuff, then I think a better tone would have been set from the beginning. Granted, I'm not a fan of the "turn the chessboard over" stuff since it's not something I haven't heard a million times in other shows and movies from around the world, but if they're going to bother making it a big deal, why not expand on it?

I saw people say that all the time and I was so sure that I would still hate her even after I found out. But they were right. I don't hate her anymore.

It seems like Studio DEEN is trying to make this look too much like Higurashi and that's really annoying. But I'm sure people won't be comparing it to Higurashi as much later on ^^

Maria is becoming more awesome with each episode, not to mention incredibly creepy.

Two more deaths, so 10 people left to go.

Less uuuu, more evil smiles. This episode was full off win.

Also I'm pretty sure someone already mentioned it but this was the second episode where I saw Maria watching the cast from Higurashi on the television, that was a really nice touch ^_^

I'm not sure I like Mara's forced Rena-faces. Maybe Yui Horie feels left out because her character didn't crazy in Higurashi.

I was glad to see some of the VNs music used in the anime, but I will not be fully satisfied until Dead of the Grave plays.

Unfortunately, that doesn't happen until Battler becomes an awesome battle lawyer.

I think this is good as an anime, but not good as an adaptation, but some stuff is and will be VERY hard to adapt.

I think I know why Maria is so screwed up, they're letting a NINE YEAR OLD watch Higurashi. Whilst I'm on that, where did Hanyuu's horns go?

I don't know why people are comparing Higurashi to Umineko. They are two completely different VNs and Series, in terms of plot, style, mystery, etc. Higurashi was about being creepy and paranoia and stuff like that, but Umineko isn't. It's a bit silly when people say that it's not as creepy as Higurashi, when it isn't supposed to be.

Well, the execution of the series is definitely trying to make it out to be all creepy and paranoiac. Which to a slight degree may be okay, since the Legend of the Golden Witch really WAS sort of creepy and paranoid... Though in a very different way from this, I think.

Either way, Kon is doing her old Higurashi tricks, so not even the director is spared expecting this to be a new Higurashi. It matters little what the SN was.

Later episodes will make this apparent.

This is just the basic stuff of Umineko. The series doesn't really take off until the next arc.

About the chessboard thing:

"Turn over the chessboard" means to look through the eyes of your oponent and predict his next move and the reaction of your turn.

In this case it means to look from the perpective of the killer.
Why does the Person act like "Beatrice" what is to gain and so on.

But what is if the culprint isn't human?
Will the game logic still work?

Anyway:

Thanks about the clearing my confusion about the higurashi scene.
(I thougth rigth place wrong Person?!) Because I only remember the sqishing part of the DVD specials. :=)

Good Episode. I kinda wanted Eva to die. Then they decided to go and give her a bit emotions I was like hmm maybe she is cool. Then HACK dead woman in a bed.

Good Episode. Anime with a slow start. Though once they get going they are really keeping me sucked in.

Can't Wait for Next Episode

Pretty good episode. Better than the first two in my opinion. The pacing was relatively good, and I'm surprised they didn't cover more than the second twilight. I wonder how many episodes will be dedicated to Episode 1 at this rate

If only the visual novel had the anime's character designs, I would actually play it as that the story is very interesting. Golden butterflies definitely reminds me of Philemon. In this case, its the manifestation of Beatrice, the golden witch..

Last episode had 6 deaths and this episode had 2.

Poor Shannon ><

So Battler is Detective Conan...interesting ^^

What's up with Maria...she has this Oyashiro mode...or is it called Beatrice here??? Whatever. On the second thought don't answer this question XD

It's a good thing I don't have any background for this series. The mystery should be felt like this.
