According to GIGAZINE, a 90-second OP-style anime of manga "Tonari no 801-chan" was announced to be produced by Yamamoto Yutaka and A-1 Pictures. The short anime titled "Tonari no 801-chan R" will be bundled with the volume 4 of the manga to be released on September 10th.

The news of Tonari no 801-chan anime was retracted two weeks after the announcement last summer. It was supposed to be produced by Kyoto Animation, which Director Yamamoto previously belonged to. The singer of the theme song of the short animation will be chosen by a public audition to be held on Niconico Anime Channel.

I have no choice other than accepting this job as my secret occupation.
... but I don't wanna cause an unnecessary trouble. So I'll be modest in this work.
Please pardon us for making only 90 seconds long anime.

Note:
Mainichi Online reported that Yamamoto Yutaka will produce a full series of 801-chan, but it contradicts the news stories from other sources.

I can easily sense YamaKan's rivalry with KyoAni.

Did he leave KyoAni on bad terms or something? Or is it more friendly rivalry?

YamaKan disclosed in Kannagi web radio #1 that he was suddenly fired from the director of Lucky Star. Kyoto Animation announced in the official website that "Yamamoto Yutaka has not reached the level of an anime director."

oh, bad terms I see. That's gotta hurt. Although, I'm not sure how a 1:30 long anime is going to be an effective rival. Maybe he's just flexing his muscles.

Yamakan's been bitter since that event, I don't blame him it had to be politically based instead of the humiliating reason they stated. Seriously how does he go from being the "golden boy" of KyoAni and directing episodes for Air, Kanon and Haruhi (The Movie Ep and the God Knows concert ep) to all of sudden "not reached the level of an anime director". His past work at KyoAni before that statement shows it's bs and his work on Kannagi afterwards cements it.

Would be kinda hilarious if he eventually makes series for this as well as getting Key's Angel Beats like he's rumored too.

I hear he has a pretty foul personality, that was one of the reasons he got the sack. But thats just a rumor.

Even so, this is pretty interesting. I really want to know why they really sacked him.

Why am I not surprised?
I bet he did this just to get back at KyoAni.

Wait.. so I don't quite get it, but maybe that's because I don't know the backstory. I think you mean to link the original/more male oriented Tonari no 801-chan instead of the shoujo Tonari no 801-chan version?

The original series could have made quite an amusing anime. :/

Edit: It's the original series. The 7andy listing talks about the DVD.

Eh.. I don't see a version packaged without it. That will be an expensive book and a nice coaster with it for me. :/

@shinkeikaku
ahhh it's quite hard to distinguish the two DB entries of the 801-chan manga.
