TBH this episode wasn't anything special for me. The "it's raining part" was spoiled to me already thanks to rabid weebtakus everywhere, and although I loved Hughe's character, he wasn't developed enough for me to really feel anything.

What really bothers me is that he went up to the telephone and decided not to call, then went to a public phone alone where an enemy can fight him?? That receptionist was stupid too. She just gasped and wah and wooh and sat back down. Based on my understanding, Hughe's death could've easily been avoided or put off.

Damn, the origin of "It's a terrible day for rain" :( . I've seen the gif of it everywhere but had no idea of the context, and it's much sadder now that I do know it

Poor Elicia and Hughes' wife :/ that funeral scene was tough

Another emotional episode, the scene of the Elrics and Winry talking about how they should do something nice for Hughes was lighthearted but also super depressing considering he just died and they didn't know about it. I've got a feeling Major Bradley is behind this whole conspiracy too

The episode comes to a sad ending, but unlike FMA occurs first, the road traveled once again is a little different, perhaps FMA death of Hughes is strongest with the character because you spend a lot more time together, feeling that do not try those who started immediately Brotherhood. Narrative that despite the differences still managed to create a good atmosphere engaging. Drawings and animations of a good standard.

Oh man I totally forgot about Hughes death ;_ ;

I hate when really good characters die. Especially to see his wife and daughter. When Elicia screamed "papa, papa" or when Mustang began to crie I also had tears in my eyes.

I think the Elric brothers and Winry will also be extremely sad when they find it out. :(

damn ...did they kill hughes?? whaaaat?
he was one of my favorites :/

it seems that good people dying is a recurring theme here...

PS: that "rain" scene had me cracking up, lol, it was so damn cheesy

Unbelievable! I can't believe Hughes is really killed off TT____TT And it feels like his death could've been avoided too I mean the phone operator girl could've asked for someone for help or something!!!! Instead she just stood there OTL

And that phone operator girl should've said exactly what Hughes said, mentioning the Fuhrer president and all! I thought Roy would go look for the Elric Brothers for a clue I guess not.. Damn, with Hughes gone, who else is gonna stand by Roy now in his journey to become the Fuhrer president? :'(

This episode always leaves me with conflicting feelings. I felt like Elicia's outburst during the funeral scene was delivered much more cleanly and emotionally than 2003, granted a kid was playing Elicia in 2003 so can't be too harsh; however, I just felt that the lack of build up for Hughes in this one left the funeral a bit empty for me. The 2003 funeral scene devastates me still to this day, but I feel like Michiru Oshima's masterpiece of a score is the major factor in that. And Armstrong's body twitching while crying was a very realistic and human touch. Mustang holding it together until after the funeral in this one was great though. Travis Willingham has really grown into playing Mustang.

That was just about the right amount of character development to kill off a supporting character early in the series and still have it feel like an impactfull loss

Daaaamn Hughes was one of those characters where when you first meet them you think "this guy's way too friendly and lovable, he's probably gonna die". Was totally right :'(

No, Hughes-san... ;__;
And his funeral... family's and friends' reactions...
So sad, yet so beautiful in its realism in animated series.

I'm kind of put off by the fact that Lust, Envy, Gluttony trio are always aware of their opponents every move like an omniscient entity. It doesn't seem very probable that they were able to find out Hughes' knowledge that quickly, as well as the other previous incidents like Fifth Laboratory or Doctor that had the Philosopher's Stone. The death seemed highly avoidable but I'll give the benefit of the doubt. I'm not deeply saddened by Hughes' death as he didn't have much development to begin with although I'd appreciate to have him more in the series.

Overall, not exactly fan of that episode

Damn, Mae died way too early and unexpectedly. My heart broke into pieces when Elicia started asking her mother wondering why they're burying her dad. Mustang finding out that it's suddenly raining outside was devastating too.

That phone operator moved too slowly and everyone let their guard down because they chalked it off as him messing around again. I hate it when those Sins just pop up whenever and wherever they want. I guess that the personification of envy was the most suitable killer of the man who had everything.

Ed, Al, and Winry's having a good time on the way to training without knowing what just happened the moment they left and that made me even more disheartened.

Had to watch this side by side with the 2003 version. Honestly there's just no comparison. I love Brotherhood, but it really doesn't deliver Hughes's death to the same caliber. These early episodes really do lack the tension, buildup and emotional depth that came with the older version.
