Evolution =/= atheism. I'm pretty sure all scientists can agree that biological evolution is a pretty airtight theory. If there are any who disagree I'd like to see some.

I respect those people; because despite society thinking it is strange; they don't change and stay what they really are

I also plan to spend valentine day with my waifu and of course I'll celebrate her birthday as well

Ehh. People celebrate the "birthdays" of literally anything anyway. Don't really see how a fictional character is any different to other"normal" shit that gets an annual celebration.

Still better than marrying them

I was trying to think of something to dispute that but I really can't.

I'm tolerant enough to give such a person space to do what they want... But that doesn't stop me from being majorly creeped out.

I heard people even celebrate the founding dates of countries. No thanks, I'd rather go partying with my waifu.

To each it's own. Weird but I mean I actually had chunnibyo in middle school so I can't really talk.

I didn't know that otaku did this until late last year but in Japan, some otaku celebrate the birthdays of their favorite characters in grand fashion.

And so do girls: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2014/02/03/fujoshi-celebrate-rin-matsuokas-birthday-freely/

What do you guys think about this?

Otaku are considered pathetic losers in that country. So it doesn't surprise me.

I think we all to some degree accept anime characters as real people(or people that exist in seperate reality). Otherwise we couldn't enjoy watching anime, being aware of how it's actually all fake and the imagination of some guy.

I too think that those guys are overdoing it but also I think we should be more understanding to them as fellow anime wievers.

I have the same birthday as Mio Akiyama. In some odd way, it is kinda flattering to see those shrines. Plus it helps people remember my birthday.

I also have the same Birthday as Yui Hirasawa :)

I love Yui, but i love Mio more tho~ xD

I don't even know what to think... But the ones in the links are way over the top to me. I mean, I'd happy set all my wallpapers to celebrate one of there birthdays but nothing more really. Nothing weird about it, but some people get too obsessed in my opinion.

Heck, I sometimes even forget when my own birthday is. What was it again >.>

More like they get stereotyped from people who have a misconception that teenagers and adults aren't allowed to enjoy what they view as children's cartoons.

The shrines they have with their 50 clones of x figures is kinda overwhelming but I think it's pretty creative. For me, I usually do graphic edits.

It's nothing bad see how some people celebrates that, but only remember that has to be more than enough maybe that thing of making party and buy a cake it's exaggerated, but if you fon't fo that I don't se what's the big deal of this thing.

I wouldn't exactly call that my cup of tea but if it makes them happy, then who am I to judge?

Anyone who thinks they have a right to condemn those kinds of folks as beneath them or as beings to pity should be more than willing to accept that same condemnation from people who finds the stuff you do strange, like watching Chinese cartoons or whatever closet hobby you might have going on.

Besides, weirdness is a relative thing. I'm sure someone could probably find someone else in this universe with a habit so vastly different from what we're used to seeing that the otaku in question here would seem extremely tame in comparison. And heck, at least these guys have good taste~

This is just another example of the obsessive fan culture that accompanies anime and manga, which I find interesting to observe. This particular activity, by itself, is basically harmless; if people enjoy doing it, I don't see a problem. Yes, I find it a bit weird, but I do things that others might find weird, so I have no reason to complain. However, this activity isn't likely to be well accepted or understood in the broader culture, so people who do it should be prepared for bad reactions if they make their celebrations public. (This is simply the reality of life these days; the bad reactions might not be justified, but they will happen nonetheless.)

This sort of activity becomes a problem if it is part of a larger obsession that causes a person to become divorced from reality, leading to serious real-world problems, such as debt, poverty, difficulty in social interactions, and the inability to complete school or hold down a job.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Saika deserves a birthday.

@ OP - To answer with a different perspective, I honestly see no problem with it. It encourages creativity and lets people have fun with their hobbies. It's no different from the people on the house remodel shows on TV that empty thousands into making their Hawaii summer house kitchen look more kawaii.

What makes a thing wrong or right? It's just a matter of perspective. The majority decides what is acceptable and what is not. I think what they do doesn't harm anybody, and if they're happy about it, let them do it. Most of the people (who call themselves "normal") would probably say that what they're doing is useless and is a waste of time, but like what I said, it's just a matter of perspective. What doesn't please you may please another person. That's what I think about it.

They are celebrating a birthday of a fictional character. Celebrating the birthday of an actor/voice actor/author would be one thing, but celebrating the birthday of their "waifu" is pathetic.

A small celebration I would be fine with, but a cake?

I don't know why you would hold a birthday party for a person that isn't even present- that kind of defeats the purpose.
