I can already tell this is totally up my alley. That silent exposition, I love when anime tries to be more like film!

I was half expecting something to pop out and scare me. It's strange, but intriguing.

Didn't expect to actually see his arm chopped off. Expected that in a flashback of sorts.
What basically happened (from his character page):

I like the ending song.

Well that was boring. I enjoyed the atmosphere, and the last 5 minutes were good. The rest of it almost put me to sleep though. I agree with the above post that the end song was real nice too.

I think the mystery of the setting is enough to push me along to see if it gets better next episode.

Well, holy shit @ opening scenes. Dem punches. I kinda liked the OP song as it gave me an eerie feeling.

That scene involving that woman in the darkness was gross and strange to watch imo. This episode seemed like a filler to me and I'm not 100% sure exactly what's going on so looking forward to more later, in terms of a linear story.

Damn, that last scene was brutal though~

Very bold first episode. An exposition with almost no dialogue. That takes some guts. Good visual storytelling, though. You learn a lot despite the fact that there's no talking.

The interaction between the little girl and the guy in the gas mask reminded me of Fahrenheit 451.

The atmosphere/art direction is very well done. If the first episode is a filter for casual viewers, I hope this show proves to be worth it for the viewers who keep going. I didn't really read any descriptions, so I wonder what it will be about.

Err, and the people actually looked Japanese. Most people in anime don't. Hehe.

This is the only series of ABe that I haven't watched yet.
The first episode didn't come to a surprise to me considering the atmosphere of Lain and the themes of Haibane Renmei were deep at times.

Overall it was interesting. I'm sure it will make more sense with future episodes~

Whoa. The parallels were extremely well done. Kind of reminds me of Blame! but even more confusing, abstract, even less dialogue, and with a larger cast of characters. I'm not sure how people were bored. Couldn't take my eyes off the screen. This could get pretty good.If serial experiments lain is like this then Imma start on that soon too.

Well i hope damn well that's right.

It was very WEIRD. I don't like WEIRD. I stay away from WEIRD. Cuz it's boring and VERY VERY SLOW and freaky, like you'd start having psychatric problems and start puking because of all the weird noises UGH.
I dun know. My discription of this episode was "gross and weird", and i have no idea why i say gross. probably because gross is weird. whatever.

If this was scaring off casual people then i guess i'll watch another episode. This was down straight boring most of all, this was worst than watching Air and Clannad, even worst than staring at my wall for half an hour.

My limit is three episodes, kids. I won't even guarantee that.

EDIT: graphics are terrible

What a dumbass. Epitome of everything I loathe in anime fans.

What the fuck.

What the fuck is that guy doing?
What the fuck is that girl doing?
What the fuck is that guy eating?
Who the fuck is that guy talking to?
Why the fuck does that girl have a mask?
Why the fuck does he follow her?
Why the fuck did they start shooting?
Why the fuck did they cut his arms?

I don't know what the fuck is happening but the animation reminds me of No Longer Human and the atmosphere too well let's see what's next.

Well I will think give this episode the benefit of the doubt.Seeing as how this is a psyccholological,non-linear story telling comes with the territory.Anyways very confusing episode.I noticed alot of emphasis is placed on the characters and their breathing.

I was looking for something similar to Ergo Proxy and was recommended Texhnolyze. The first episode is really a tour de force of "show, don't tell" and I'm guessing I cannot expect an info dump screen anytime soon. Anyhow, it's pretty clear that the boxer pissed the kinky lady off and as result got his arm chopped off in the process. And at some point that'll tie up to the girl and her organization (some kind of a resistance group perhaps?).

Love the atmosphere and the art. It seems it will quite a ride.

There is a difference between being weird and being mysterious. This was a mix of both IMO. The camera angles and the overall darkness made the episode very confusing.

I know the value of deliberate pacing and atmosphere, but using most of the first episode to scare away viewers does sound incredibly pretentious to me. That and an incredible waste of time. I certainly hope that this was not his intent.

Most of this episode was unnecessarily confusing to be honest. I can see they're obviously not trying to spoon-feed us anything here, but not showing us enough to get invested into the characters while having what seems to be a deliberately opaque setup to the plot makes it hard to really get into this show. A small glimpse into the world and the last 5 minutes of action might be enough to keep things interesting enough though.

That all said, I'll give ABe the benefit of the doubt here, since I absolutely loved his work in Haibane Renmei, easily one of my favorite series. I'm sure there's a great story here to be told, but we're not exactly getting an easy welcome here.

Maybe it's because I'm tired, but really didn't care much for how little dialogue there was. I hope more answers than questions are answered in the next episode because didn't really like this one too much.

Interesting first episode.

Looks unique and the art was also captivating, I am anxious to know what will happen in the next episodes because there are so many questions and no answers.

Possibly my favourite first episode of anything! Thick atmosphere, great tone and a good 'n' slow pacing that reminds me of Tarkovsky's Stalker. This is what a Ghost in the Shell tv series should have been like.

Figured I'd pick this one back up for another try. Slow, but weird. I'm in the mood for that now, so we'll see if I can finish it this time.

So little dialogue...

Hmm well I don't have much to say about this first episode but the atmosphere is rather dark and I'm not sure what this anime is actually about.

First show ive ever seen that lasted a full episode with under 15 lines of dialogue... if the whole series is this way, its gonna require a hell lotta focusing; twice the concentration as trying to watch Ergo Proxy.

I really like the style of the first episode, bare minimum of dialogue and it was heavy on the atmosphere. I like how they kept cutting between Ran and Ichise.

Was a bit strange for sure.

I like the atmosphere though, that was kept me watching.

Not really sure what's going on yet, but whatever, just episode 1 xD it's probably going to be confusing though, that much is obvious. i'll stay for atmosphere anyways.

I had to watch this episode a couple of times, and I still don't think I understood everything. This was "show, don't tell" taken to the extreme.

I have so many theories about what happened in this episode. Its great when a show does something different like this and doesn't use much dialogue because instead of being spoon fed information I have to actually think about whats going on and it gives me an opportunity to make interesting theories in my head as I watch the show. Also its one of those anime where people will have multiple interpretations of what happened which can be discussed among anime viewers.

I just tried to make sense of what I was seeing as I watched so here are my random thoughts on the various events in the first episode. Be warned I know very little about this show except for the fact that it has something to do with mafia.

- In the first scene I thought the main character was in a fighting facility where people pay to see fights to the death and they bet on the fighters. I think either the main character has to earn his way into the mafia by winning lots of fights, or its his job as being part of that mafia to be a fighter to make them money off of bets, or he did something that pissed off the mafia guys so he is forced to do this to earn his freedom or earn his way back into the mafia. It seems like the fighting facility is underground because he was walking in some underground place shortly after a fight due to the blood on his hands. The place where he was washing his hands reminded me of the sewers from Jak 2 if any of you played that game.

- the next part I have several theories about as well. When the girl came up to him she wanted to fuck him or it was because since he won the fight he got to fuck some whore that the mafia owns. Or maybe she is married/dating one of the other mafia guys potentially a higher up, and she was having an affair with him. When they were having sex she tried to stick her robotic hand into his eye. The way she did it it seemed like she was a robot or just a cyborg because her arm looked mechanical but the rest of her body looked normal. Maybe the MC is a cyborg or robot too because maybe data or something could be collected through his eye. When the girl did that it must have been some kind of threat to him so he threw her off.

- I didn't really understand what was going with that other guy with the gas mask. The gas mask indicates that they are in a really shitty city or potentially a post-apocalyptic world. Suddenly a girl came up to him and told him to meet her somewhere and he went there. It seemed like she had supernatural powers or something and maybe that's why the mafia came to attack them. Either they want her powers or they see her as a threat to them. Then the guy fought all the mafia off.

- The final scene where the MC got cut seemed like it was because of the woman. Either she was with one of the guys and she told him about what happened between them or coerced them into killing him. Either that or he just fucked up and the mafia punished him. Also, it could be a scene from his past before the events of this episode.

Overall I'm liking the show and I'm looking forward to more interesting episodes. BTW I like the opening and ending as well.

Very interesting directing style and great animation. To start the series in this way is very bold as they push the 'show and don't tell' policy to an artistic level. It did go to an extent that I didn't fully comprehend everything, but there is definitely enough there to get a basic framework and it's still only the first episode. I have a feeling I'm going to love this anime.

Firstly, echoing what others have said... what the hell did I just watch?

Secondly, I actually want to watch more, but for right now I need something with a faster pace and more dialogue to it. I will definitely continue watching this later.

What the the most strange episode 1s I've seen. Pretty confused on whats going on. 0 talking in the first 11 minutes was pretty weird. (Plenty of heavy breathing tho)
The ending of the episode was brutal with his arm getting cut off.

I'm going by dodgy memory but at the time this was released I remember reading that the creator of the show said the first episode was intentonally done this way to scare off casual viewers.

I didn't particularly like this ep, but I will continue on. Guess I'm not a casual viewer lol

That's really neat, actually. Didn't notice that O.O (I noticed the lizard but I suck at piecing together these kinds of things haha)

Geez, it's gonna be one of these kind of shows, huh?

I liked parts of this episode, such as the character design, and the animation and the visual direction. Hell, I even like how most of it was completely silent, as it set a nice tone.

However, this episode actually didn't convey much of anything to the viewer. It just ended up trying to force symbolic imagery down your throat, and (as is the case with most of these series) it came off as super pretentious to me.
These kind of series just seem to be made for people to over-analyze despite not actually saying much of anything.

Ugh, I'll keep going with it for now to see if it gets any better, but I'll probably end up feeling the same way about this as I did with Serial Experiments Lain.
That is to say: I'll likely end up thinking it's well made, but also super pretentious and a giant waste of the animation team's talent.
I suppose we'll see what happens, though. This is simply a poor first impression.
