| I guess the lizard at the end means the guy will replace his hand somehow. The whole scene with Ran "leading" the mustache man reminded me of a sequence from Shuji Terayama's "Grass Labyrinth". Specifically the gesture. |

| I'm rewatching this after some long-ass time, and I remembered this episode as completely silent, but I was actually wrong. Interestingly enough, it's mostly the main character that's got no voice, and I'm thinking that it's a way to liken him to a wild beast - as he is living like one at the moment. The exception is Ran, who seems to be an oracle-like figure, which might explain her lack of speech in a different way. |

| Rewatched this quite a while back and I'm now completely serious when I say that this is the best pilot episode of any anime I've ever watched. Absolutely fucking incredible. People who don't understand or appreciate this do not understand the incredible complexities and foreshadowing of meditative nihilism. The animation is brilliant and the cinematography is very cinematic. Great use of sound and shot composition. Brilliant. It all felt so short yet so long, I loved this. Really proves itself to be the best anime I've ever watched after the mammoth of anime, Monster. |

| The first half this episode was by far the most uncomfortable sequence of scenes I've seen in anime. Maybe that was due to all the breathing. The latter half of the episode seems to be taking on a more cohesive narrative, even if it's still incredibly vague. Hopefully it follows from there. Obviously the backgrounds and atmosphere are top-notch as well. The grungy, ruined urban environment is the perfect framework for engaging media. |
