VA Takimoto Fujiko revealed in her blog that she has recently been scarce of jobs and she couldn't even participate in the auditions of the Spring-term anime. She said the producers tend to employ newface Seiyu with low guaranteed fee or popular idol Seiyu.

The guaranteed fees of Seiyu are determined by a ranking system. Each Seiyu is ranked A, B, C... according to the experience and the popularity, and the guarantee fee increases as his or her rank goes up. This system brings about a bad effect that the producers avoid to use veteran Seiyu with higher ranks.

Ref. The guarantee fee of a 30min episode anime ($1 = 100 yen)
newface: 15,000 - 20,000 yen
highest rank: 45,000 - 58,000 yen

Did she consider that maybe she just doesn't have much skill? Her role in Noien was hardly memorable...

I wish I cared, but I don't know a single role. For being a veteran, that isn't much in the database at least..

I'm wondering about these fees, do these numbers apply to the main characters only or something? It doesn't look like many seiyu are too well off if these are the typical numbers, they'd need to have about 1-2 starring roles at a time to get by.

Have to agree with that... it's rare that I dislike someone's voice, but I do dislike hers...

T_T no fair... actually, i already predicted that most spring anime hired newface seiyuu.. the popular seiyuu is only hired for supporting chara and the main is by some people i dont who.. T_T i've been searching for animes with sakurai takahiro as the main character.. but the only chara in new animes i can find is just some supporting chara except for genji in genji monogatari.. >.<" T_T i miss sakurai voicing as a cool character or the hero character..

but this also shows something.. sakurai is a high ranking seiyuu.. YAY!!! ^__^

It kind of sucks for them, I mean, it doesn't seem like they can win. If you are good, and get cast in lots of roles, you become popular, but then you end up climbing rank, so then they don't want to hire you, and instead hire newfaces, but then when the new faces get hired a lot, their ranking goes up, then they also stop getting roles and the cycle begins again. I guess you best bet is to be solidly "average" so you have steady supporting role work (preferably in some massively long steady-pay series like detective conan or whatever), and not get too many lead roles? Or would your ranking go up if you have been a random supporting character on many long-running series, too?

The only exceptions seem to be those who manage to attain "idol" status somehow.

Usually the idols are casted as the main character of a popular series *hinthintnudgenudgeayahiranohinthint*
Otherwise, they have the skills and looks to go with it. Mizuki Nana is as much of an idol in the singing business for the non-anime said as well as the anime side.

I think the pay is probably for a set amount of lines... but I ain't too sure.

just a one more fruit of the middle age system of improving your career in Japan.
even though they have some salary limit it doesn't necessary mean they'll get it.
I think they'll reconsider some of trade union or trade union-like rules, cause of this crisis.

I haven't seen any anime with her voice-acting sofar.
Yeah, well she isn't a beauty, that's for sure, noone can become popular with that kind of look. (She should have spared some money for a stylist...)

I tried really hard to care. Honestly I did. For a moment, I thought I had it, this peculiar feeling in my stomach. Then I realised I was just hungry.

Times are hard.
Your search on "Oran Solus" returned the following quotes:
"Oran Solus? I know him. What a wanker. He still owes me a tenner." Oscar Wilde
"Oran, you're so intelligent and awesome <3" Bakayaro
"Oran's sexy." LolitaDecay
"Oran is a sophisticated penguin." Drybananna
"Oran is a Hand-Eye you faggots." EddieSpaghetti
"Oran for Prime Minister." the_prime_one
"Oran is all that is stated in his sig and more." orbitzz

The only solution is for the seiyuu to keep their rank as low as possible, unless they seek popularity. Even so, this isn't guaranteed since the fact that experience points do raise ranks, like a RPG..

Maybe, she can join the world of "freeters" in which she can have one or multiple part-time jobs and as soon as she is hired to do seiyuu work, she can just quit and go back to seiyuu work. The economy is not good, it is always better to plan ahead.

I didn't realize how low the pay was for voice actors...

Seriously, to have a decent living, they would have to be doing at least 2 different animes at once!

Oh shi-- I didn't even think of looking at her face when I saw this forum. From now on I shall judge any and all voice actors by their faces. Cause it's what really matters.

I fail to see how her face would play into this (although I think it's just her hair that's bad). You won't see her face if she's just doing anime. :p

You're missing the point. If I'm the director of a series, and I need a voice actor for this cute girl, who am I going to pick? WHY WOULD I PICK AN UGLY GIRL TO VOICE A CUTE GIRL. THE IDEA IS RIDICULOUS

Yeah, and we shouldn't have to put up with all these ugly male seiyuu playing hot bishounen. What is the world coming to? Pffft.
