Define good, dear fellow, and define Japan. Is it perchance the government? Is it perchance the geographical area? Is it mayhaps the body of individuals who all hold Nipponese citizenship? Or is it the vague cultural continutiy of products from the Jomon period vases down to Hello Kitty dildos? And is the goodness ethical? Aesthetical? Perchance practical or playful applications of whatever one defined above?

In most configurations of above definitions, I'd say "bah, ask a worthwhile question instead". In the rest I'd say "Legend of the Galactic Heroes".

Hmm ask this question in either of China or Korea where a few short decades ago the Japanese were doing there best to make Hitler look like a late comer to genocide.

I love Japanese school girls (not sure why).
I of course like anime.

I think Japanese female vocals sound nice.
The katana is an incredible example of metalurgy.

But their diet keeps me from wanting to live there. Not to mention I don't care for incredibly crowded entirely expensive cities that are parked on an extremely volcanic island chain. Their broadband speeds don't make up for that eh.

The fact that I don't speak Japanese, and the fact they would never consider me a real citizen (no not born there ever is).

I like their electronics, but, if you look closely, even they now get most of their shit from China.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

Mayhaps the hierarchic, xenophobic, oppressive and antiindividualistic society itself, shying from even remote signs of individuality and being very sharply divided in Inside/Outside? The nail that stands out must be hammered in as it were. A foreigner can scarcely think of being integrated, even after years of living there - merely because he's a foreigner. There's the burakumin. There's poverty and whatnot, like anywhere else, too. A not exactly illustrious history; say, the Rape of Nanjing could probably not be called "good" without a rather fancy flight of the imagination. Apocalypse Zero was produced by ostensibly Nipponese folk.

And let's not forget Kadokawa, them bastards.

So yes, there are bad things too. Really, it's so vague and large a concept, and at times even arbitrary, that saying much anything about it without going into insanely long essays hedged by "but note that"s aplenty, is worthless.

I like how all the people who like Japanese schoolgirls probably havent met any before but if they did they'd soon realise that the vast majority are so bland, generic, lacking in anything resembling individuality, they have more in common with Romero's commercial zombies than actual flesh and blood teenagers.

I think it begins around age 13. Before then, the kids are of all sorts, but then after that age they're all of one mind....the hive mind.....the school system has beaten them. They've shed all quirks, original traits, 'unsociable' qualities, its all gone, or hidden, so when you ask them a question their replies are all identical, all the time.

Generalisation of course, but I'm sure my broad-stroke (bad pun here somewhere) thoughts would be echoed by others who have been around Japanese schoolkids, or more to the point, schoolgirls of the type pedos on this site have a fetish for.

No, they're not moe or kawaii, they're fucking boring. And living in such a rigid system as Japan, what can we expect? Teens in US/UK can do whatever the hell they like, which is why they're all batty.

I think I really did notice it more in kids than adults, which I thought would be worse because they'd get teased, but then all their teeth are messed up so no one could tease anyone else about it!

That pic above isnt even the worst I saw while I was in Japan last year.

Or maybe something they're missing from their water. I know US and Canada puts Flourine (or flouride, whatevs) in the water to whiten teeth. Where I lived in Europe, there was none, because flourine in the water is bad for pregnant/nursing women and little babies. And since there's flourine in toothpaste anyways, they figured lack of birth defects > yellow teeth.

Or maybe it's genetic lol

Or maybe I have no idea what the fuck I'm saying

One thing I do know

Sushi > everything else. So therefore Japan is so good.

Allow me to just go into some of the goods and bads, in my opinion, for balance.

Goods:
Temperate Rainforest. Animism. One of the most developed and interesting ones at that.
Widespread Atheism. A diet health enough to have a low low obesity rate. Abrahamic influence is minimal and that which has been introduced is usually a Easternized, exotified, and romanticized version. First World economy.
Shorthand Kana, which allows for the preservation of Kanji with an easier learning curve. From my Western standpoint, Agglutinative instead of Tonal.
Fair acceptance of homosexuality, though many rights improvements could be made.
Fairly libertarian in general.

Bads:
Confucian cultural pitfall. People who shame themselves sick and to an extreme lack of self esteem. Stupidly nationalistic politicians. Overly strict drug laws.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.
