All I could think was just because you put some fancy intense music in the background, doesn't mean you're making the scene interesting. For 5 minutes all we saw was Zwei running up hills and doing push-ups. Then he strated shooting for another 5 minutes only this time he showed no emotion in the rain, which means it's plenty different... Somehow, I still was somewhat amused with these more boring than life characters and pointless plot, so I'll continue watching

I'm really liking the opening and ending sequences!

Exactly. This is just beginning and we didn't do much character development in the first episode this pace is what I expected.

Mmm not as intriguing as the first ep, but it's also just the introduction. Overall, a decent pace and all.

I wonder what will happen if Dr Scythe rebels against inferno? He is only to make phantom assassins.....yes?

My prediction is that Ein and Zwein will realize later that they don't wanna kill people anymore and in order to do that they must stop Inferno from whatever they are doing. So they form an empire along with Yagami Light and use the time machine to go back in time and steal the hiroshima nuke bomb and use it against them to explode the shit out.

No... seriuly talking i don't wanna conclude anything yet since Phantom has good potential.

ROFL I was following you till you mentioned Yagami light.

The pace seems similar to the old TV series la fem nikita.

I have a few ideas of how this could play out. The most used story in these types of shows would be having the two of them run from Inferno and be hunted down by other assassins within Inferno. In the process the two form romantic feelings and one potentially dies while saving the other.

PS. looked like Ein wanted to be comforted when she came back from sniping that guy. She stood there looking at the kid as if to say "hug me please". She seems to have feelings or some kind of attachment for the number 2 as we saw in episode 1.

Thought the animation was nice (again) and *most* of the music (Claudia's scene with Zwei.. the sax was a bit too late-night-porno-hotline-commercial-esque for me).

I'm intrigued enough to keep watching it, but I hope the Inferno characters become more intimidating. Right now, they come off as seriously cheesy, which kinda detracts from any threatening atmosphere they're supposed to create. =/

So apparently for some people, slow = bad.

I enjoyed this more than the first episode. I think such episodes are important for this kind of show, in order to develop the main characters' psychological profile and their relations. After all they are quite emotionless other times. I wouldn't mind though seeing some gun fight a la Noir in the next episodes.

Needless to say, if you don't like quiet girls with guns, you won't like this show probably.

Strangely enough, the production values didn't drop at all in this second episode. On top of it, one character emerges fromf the cast, the beautiful and surprinsingly humanist Claudia McCunnen (I thought she was another warmonger and treacherous fatal beauty but I guess I was wrong). The pace decreased though to remain at Bee Train's standards but the direction was still well above average. Quite a good episode overall I must say, that confirmed what I thought of this series.

Heh like one ANN reviewer said "This episode is where we separate the men from the boys (or the patient from the impatient) You can't watch Bee Train and not expect some slow moving parts. Except Blade of the Immortal maybe

Hmm. Still feels very typical. It's not poorly written, but the premise is so stale that it's hard to get excited about this series.

I also feel like the symbolism is too heavy-handed, especially the puppet thing. That metaphor is much too obvious for them to keep repeating like this. Gives me the feeling that the writers are trying to make Phantom seem more intelligent than it really is.

I think I see where people were coming from by invoking Darker than Black last episode discussion. Thematically and artistically it's not very similar at all, but the main character looks an awful lot like Hei, and those masks they wear in the OP/ED look nearly identical to Hei's. Furthermore, I think in the second DtB OP, Hei had a puppet-like pose during one of the scenes.

The problem lies in the way it was directed. Too much time wasted on Zvai shooting and tranining and the scenes weren't as thrilling as they were supposed to be. We know he lost his memory and that they're both imprisoned by an organization and forced to kill people. What's next?

I went and rewatched this episode yesterday, and to confirm, I did fall asleep. I think the only thing interesting was understanding Claudia's reason to say what she did to Zwei, and really, that was it.

Also, these are the least charismatic main characters I've ever seen.

I didn't really mind the slowness of this episode. It made sense to me to show some training as well as (by implication) Zwei losing his desire to questions things. I'm curious as to what will happen next. It's been a long time since I've seen a Beetrain show though, so I don't know if I'll be able to last or not.

People keep saying this, but besides the masks what are the similarities? Zwei and Hei couldn't really be further apart personality-wise, since Hei has one and Zwei doesn't. People have psychic powers in DtB and people have guns in Phantom. Plus there was a larger cast with geniuinely funny moments, which I've yet to see in this show.

I don't think this show needs funny moments, on the contrary, I would REALLY like to see one serious show, but what this show needs is character development, and it needs to start doing it asap...so far what we know about characters is that zwei doesn't want to die and is killing because of that, and that ein kills because she was told so...no further explanation why was she forced into this, how and when, those things will probably come later on,but still...this show needs to move, give characters some life, otherwise it's going to fail into killing-for-no-reason category.

Indeed.

This almost always seems to be the case though. To make a big generalization: when encountering something new, most people need to contextualize that new thing within a familiar framework until they are comfortable enough to form a new one. So, it's not surprising that people compare this show to Darker Than Black. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it's understandable, considering its popularity and the masks, perhaps perceived shared unemotion, remotely similar character designs, I don't know. In any case, the only thing peculiar here is that, for some reason, some of these people feel the need to announce that they've gone through this process. So, I just take these statements for what they are -- moments of public self-affirmation or, occasionally, pleas for the validity of their choice of framework. With that in mind, when it isn't annoying, I'd say it's almost a bit interesting... (^_^)

Just for clarification,

On my part the similarity was purely aesthetic. When I saw the trailer, the masks and the main character resembled Hei and I was instantly struck with 'Darker Than Black' vibes. :) Of course the plot and character personalities have nothing to do with the aforementioned series (especially after viewing the first two episodes), and I wouldn't draw any sort of comparison in that regard. ^^

I'm gonna have to disagree with the majority of people here and say that I thought this episode was pretty entertaining. I think it's a nice why to build up to Zwei becoming an assassion. I'd be so annoyed if suddenly they just showed him being drugged and the next thing you know, he's killing a bunch of people.

I liked seeing Zwei realizing that if he wants to live he has to kill and him training was interesting as well. You could slowly see the humanity in his eyes draining throughout the episode.

There seems to be plenty of psychological drama and action to come and I'm not quite sure which one I'm looking forward to the most.

The Way to survival is the Way to kill; the Way to avoid battle is the Way to die. Very easy to understand and this also seems to be reality. If enemies pursue you and you try to avoid it, you will most likely end up getting killed.

It wasn't as intriguing as the first episode and quite a sudden change of pace. Not a great episode to watch Raw when there's this much dialog. Hiroshi Morioka did a good job with his direction and storyboarding even with all the bizarre angles and camera motions used.

The music is just as awesome as it was in episode one especially in the training sequences.

Nice training Zwei.
Oh, and Ein is freaking hot. Some big ol' tits she have when she was teaching Zwei how to shoot a gun.

I wonder if Zwei will able to surpass Ein. Damn, we've also seen these big bosses of the Inferno.
I didn't even get what that Ms Claudia said to Zwei tbh, so basically they're not slaves but slaves that can get freedom if they put effort? Lol.

Still, it was a nice episode.

Been waiting for this for a long time, thought it would be great, but I've just watched 2 eps and can say that my expectations about this anime were not fulfilled at all. Graphics are pretty good, sound is normal, but characters... Their "we are none", "just a phantoms" for several times during the first ep totally broke the tone: these words in a serious psychological art are like spelling lessons in the university. It's a nonsense for such genre... except that if they expected only little children to watch this :/ . Illogical dialogues (in the most of the moments it would be better if they were silent), clumsy moments of pathos, weak directing some of the scenes and plastic emotions from time to time are also hard to sustain.

Unfortunately, the second episode is the same. I can't say anything about the plot, maybe it's great, but watching it on is beyond me. Diagnosis: very overrated.
