that's good, for me I'm still looking for a better way to study Japanese.

How are you studying now?
I'm trying to improve on my fluency when speaking. Plus still learning new kanji. It just somehow feels a lot slower than I had been when I started studying the language

Next to nothing. I may have too few credits for my last 1.5 years of school so I may throw in a moonspeak class if it's offered.

Well as for me, I just started a week ago and I'm learning some basic vocab. and can write down some hiragana. I self-teach myself in my free time with a DS and "My Japanese Coach". Once I get past some more lessons, I have some books (there not advanced or anything) that will teach me some phrases and some minimal grammar. I personally think I doing great so far (I can write 20 characters ^_^) though so if any of you got a DS this game is really useful.

Cool. I'm actually becoming tired of using Rosetta Stone; I just keep repeating the same stuff without ever encountering anything new.

I can understand basic statements or confirmation. Like:

"Did you do this because of this?"

"Yes, I did and it was hard."

But when they go on and on for paragraphs or use terms from Japanese culture then I'm lost. Or when they speak fast O-O' if they don't speak at a slow and "comprehensible to a disabled person" speed I can't keep up.

I've been taking Japanese classes for two years now, and going on my third. I can understand most of the simple and common things being said, but if they use a lot of scientific or medical terms and such, I wouldn't be able to understand it. I still regularly use subs.

How have your classes affected your conversational Japanese? Like, after about 3 years, do you consider yourself a competent speaker?

I could probably understand what's being said to me, but I would only be able to respond in English. That's my fault though, as I didn't study conversational Japanese very much outside of class. To become good at conversational Japanese, it would be best to have someone you could speak with casually. If you had someone like that, then I think you could become a somewhat competent speaker in three years.

OR.....someone could take over the anime industry and force it to produce everything in English. But unlike Funimation, use more than 10 people to voice the characters.

I thought about taking over the world and making everyone speak english. Then I went to history class the next day and read about all the people dying before their time due to those ambitions.

I don't really have a problem with the pronunciation. Though i must admit that its easier to learn Japanese from Dutch then English considering pronunciation. Though i haven't learned much more then konnichiwa, nihongoga scoshi wakarimasu. Watakuchiwa Orandajin desu. and the all important biru hoshidesu!! losely translated to dutch: ik wil bier XD very important

Learning. I know a fair amount from anime and can pick out 2 or 3 words from sentences and then guess what they are saying.

Yeah pronunciation is easy. It's definitely easier to pronounce the words with a different language background than English.

I am learning also...I think maybe ill have to self-teach myself like my "manga ka" friend...I see and understand some words in anime and I sing plenty of japanese songs(when im in the shower or in a car)...I guess singing helps me memorize and.in anime i can assume some of what they are saying because of how they say it and other character reactions...also their emotions that come with the words...Which can help if we make a fansubing group..."How to find anime" fansubbing group ftw!(in the near future maybe if we find a japanese person or something XD)

I know some words, not that many though. I am teaching myself with a Japanese/English dictionary, and a phrase book. I started to get interested in Japanese when I started watching anime, because after a while, I could understand some(some may be exaggerating it) of the words. I also almost only listen to music from anime. Still trying to learn the sentence structure. I know some insults.....got too bored one day, so i decided to look up insults in different languages.

I am at the point where I can understand a few words and generaly what is being said by the characters reactions and the words that I do know. But in general I have a long way to go before I can watch RAW.

This is very true for me. I really started to want to learn Japanese when I started watching anime. I started picking up words and phrases and I am still learning. My friend is going to get me a copy of the Rosetta Stone. That should help a lot. We will see. I am just excited to start to learn more.

Ive been watching subbed anime since I was 8(So for 7 years) and taught myself even more from what I picked up on, I also started taking formal classes, so I can write in Hiragana and Katakana, Kanji s beyond me. I can understand what they say but I prefer to watch with subs because english is my native language so when I watch raw, I kinda have to process what they say, especially with a complex(and beautiful) language like japanese, and that takes away some of the fun away from the anime. So yes I can watch raw but prefer not to. X)

Well.. I can't say that I have a big Japanese vocabulary but I can say that I know Hiragana after all.. Yes I know it's the MOST BASIC alphabet of Japanese but I got it pretty much covered.. Plus I recently realized that I can understand %30-40 of the sentences.. Plus I bought a pocket vocabulary... When I'm curious of something I just open it up.. It doesn't have ALL the words since it's a pocket vocabulary..

BTW There is a Nintendo DS game out there.. "My Japanese Coach" or something.. It REALLY helps.. If anyone needs to play it, PM me. I can give you some ideas for how to play it on PC with emulators...
