Speed Grapher deals with the serious issue that Eves Wide Shut was a terrible way for Kubrick to end his career.
The most disturbing part of it is that it was made by Gonzo.

If you've seen Eyes Wide Shut, you'll understand that Speed Grapher takes the movie to its logical conclusion, which is full of crazy people who collect legs and superpower-cults and all that shit.
It's worth a watch if you don't have much else to do.

All the ones that first came to mind you've already watched, but I'll do my best.

The ghibli film Grave of the Fireflies shows the impact of war, only watched the first 20 minutes or so in my Japanese class a couple years ago, we had to turn it off because it was too depressing, it seemed damn good though. - http://myanimelist.net/anime/578/Hotaru_no_Haka

Welcome to the N.H.K., I see it's already on your PTW. It's a psychological show about a shut-in, covers plenty of problems with society. It's also pretty depressing. - http://myanimelist.net/anime/1210/NHK_ni_Youkoso!

Those are the best I can think of right now, I'll tell you if I think of another one. Oh, and it's nice to see another New Zealander on MAL.

Grave of the Fireflies is a pretty awful movie when you read up on exactly why it was made.

Barefoot Gen is a much better example of war-torn Japan. You actually get a bombing scene and, most importantly, the characters are actually characters.

Yeah, I was thinking of recommending Barefoot Gen, though I've only seen part of that as well.

5cm per second is a pretty serious one. If you're going for psycho-sociological, Psycho Pass would maybe be a good fit? It's convoluted and srs bzns.
Log Horizon might also work. Despite it being the help-im-stuck-in-a-game variety, it actually focuses on just about everything else BUT romance. (Which is cool.)

Did you forget all the crush plots? I'm guessing you haven't read the light novel either... It's 40-50% romance.
How do people get to 2000 hours when I'm already this bored?

I'd like to chip in Kaiji. Not only is it hugely entertaining, but it really gets across how addictive gambling is and the impact it can have on people.
the official MAL hall of fame/cursed comments is now open for business - you are welcome to PM me any potential quotes to include
