That is not true. Go read Uzumaki and come back and edit your post. Horror anime is a joke, but there is legitimate horror manga. Pupa doesn't even come close to a horror, it's just borderline guro.
Uzumaki's good, but it's still not actual horror level. from what I've seen and read, anime/manga can build suspense as good as any other medium if not better, but as far as bringing fear, it is not the medium you want to go to.
Pupa (the anime) is bad for reasons not related to the censoring, it's the presentation, The sounds might be authentic, and the voices are well suited so far. But that's all it has going for it. The prior expectations. made this show look like an anime that was filled with soul rending sadness, which it is now, but for a completely different reason.
The pacing was off. everywhere, DEEN skipped the prologue, and removed all backstory, You see the climax of the beginning occur and things happen, but unlike the manga, you never get to learn about the characters themselves. the father is shown for literally 3 seconds, and the mother is never spoken of, you don't get any explanations on their scars, and you don't have the understanding that comes from being told in detail about the characters. this episode throws you into the central plot, but without proper preparation, you will never get anything out of this story other than mindless gore (I like gore in a story, but not at the expense of the original plot.).
There has only ever been one 5 minute anime series I have EVER seen that was worth watching, and that was +tic nee san, because comedy is far better when you don't drag out the jokes.
I've read the manga, and there is so much more to it than cannibalism. the characters have more depths to them, and their interactions reveal questions about their pasts that have yet to be answered (they have yet to be answered as far as I've read). Pupa is neither the correct genre, nor the correct style to work properly in 5 minute bursts. the short duration removes all hope of proper pacing/buffering, because everything will be rushed and underdeveloped. 5 minutes leaves no room at all for proper dialogue/pacing,
I will admit that the cannibalism is probably the largest draw, but the characters, and the story have so much more potential. It might not turn into an amazing story, the reveals might turn out to be crappy, and there might be loose ends left everywhere, but it hasn't happened yet,
Tl;dr: the story has just started, and while the anime is 95% guaranteed to suck now, at least the manga still has potential to be good or better. |
