| Anything that ranks here on the manga and novel lists is doing quite well even if it isn't Sword Art Online or Shingeki no Kyogin. I think series that don't rank but which continue to run in their magazines, they are doing well too. That is actually the danger at times for running in the big magazines; they have higher expectations than the smaller magazines. Your run in Shounen Jump may end with sales levels which would make them the flagship title of smaller publishers. If your favorites are still being made then I think you can probably just be happy about that. Having Naruto/One Piece sales is not always good; I'm not sure how much freedom they have to end those series when they want to end them. |

CDJapan has everything except volume 4 listed as "within 5-7 days" - volume 4 being out of print. Perhaps they've reprinted the first half so far but not the second. It certainly looks as though they've done the first 2 volumes but not volume 4. |

SAO has a huge fanbase (that it had years to build up) from back when it was an online web novel. Log Horizon is still fairly new. The outcome of the anime usually has the effect of boosting sales of the novel, as it's an advertisement. It's not going to suddenly cause fans of the novel to abandon it or anything. None of this moe and Gary Sue nonsense that some in the western fanbase like to sprout around, which most likely originated from /a/ on 4chan or something along those lines. Moe isn't a genre, it's a rising feeling that can invoked by pretty much anything... An example I like to give is the tanks in Girls und Panzer. These tanks invoked the moe feeling amongst military otaku. I'm quite sure those tanks aren't cute girls at all like the western fanbase like to stereotype too much. The Japanese are also not so shallow to like something just because it has cute girls, a possible overpowered main character, harem, etc. They look for a balance of everything (good characters, character interactions, music, plot, etc), unlike some in the western fanbase who places too much emphasis on plot for something to even interest them. That shallow obsession with plot is displayed so well in the Anime Discussion forum, on ANN, and also in the News Discussion threads (with those whiny posts on "why does this shit sell so much when anime B is oh so much better", etc etc, we see so often) |

Mahouka is newer than Log Horizon, hasn't had its anime aired yet and yet it's massively more popular than Log Horizon. Obviously because the Japanese think it is more interesting than Log Horizon? I don't know what you're trying to prove here, but I obviously didn't mean in a literal sense that a longer running series with naturally have a larger fanbase as with the case of SAO and Log Horizon. It is just evident that is the case, due to how many potential people could have bought the novel (since they wanted to own it, and read more of it later) when it was serialised in 2009, as the original SAO web novel had millions of pageviews. If you're referring to my next sentence in the quote, then no. Just because it can invoke the moe feeling, and the main character is overpowered, doesn't mean it's a sure formula for success. There are many other novels that have the same elements that may not be as successful. It's all to do also with how heavily advertised it is, how it was serialised, and many other factors. I'm sure someone else can explain the other factors involved with novels that can potentially make them successful. |
