Woman opens up about high school rape, urges schools to work harder to protect victims

Experts say sexual assault in schools is a huge problem and isn't being handled correctly. From Steubenville, Ohio to Maryville, Mo., victims such as Rachel Bradshaw-Bean feel like they're being punished for reporting rape.

http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/rape-schools-officials-acting-article-1.1556394

So, not only are schools at risk of the horrid school shooting -- they're also places of rape, where the victim gets punished.

I have a feeling -- this is primarily motivated by school officials, who favor silencing the victim rather than dealing with a rape incident. If I remember correctly, there's that school in Missouri, that had a nasty rape case.

I don't think this thread is going to go well, but I can't say I'm surprised. Schools would usually much rather shut a rape victim up than dare admit that their athletes/staff aren't as prestigious as they'd have them appear. Who cares if someone's life was just ruined, when district pride?

I don't wanna be the one that calls 'Merica on this, but it comes from how much your culture values sports. In Canada we don't care as much about sports and we don't see our highschool athletes as heroes.

Yeah, I think that's true as well. We really value our sports teams, especially schools in rural areas where that's pretty much only what they're known for.

Of course, if you only use biased sources for news, you tend to get skewed stories that leave out inconvenient facts in order to push the conclusion. In this case, the prosecutor suggested it may have been consensual, and based on that, both parties were punished. While there's a clear problem here, the girl was not specifically targeted, as the accused boy got the same punishment.
I do blame the investigation that seems more than a little suspicious (they don't have a transcript of hat suggested it may have been consensual = they don't have a claim in that direction), though I do agree that the chances of a conviction are fairly low. That's just reality - rape is often hard to prove if it can be taken down to a he said/she said.

The article also focuses only on the side of girls who are victims. I'm not sure the suffering indicated is quite universal, or even as widespread as it suggests. It may in fact swing in the opposite direction in many high schools, as is the case in many colleges and universities. Also, as noted in the above article, many studies on the frequency of "rape" and "sexual assault" include things that almost anyone would agree are nothing of the sort (seriously, "he touched me in a way or place I didn't explicitly consent to while having consensual intercourse?"). Until I know where the OP's article's statistics come from, I have to take them with a grain of salt

In the end, just remember that, for every Steubenville, there's also a Duke Lacrosse. The door swings both ways.
The difference is that the officials at Steubenville did eventually get charged, while many of the Duke Lacrosse victims, which include the entire team and not just the implicated students, will never be able to reverse all the improper punishments or charge those who instituted them.

Yet similar problems persist. Remember, it's not about sports, it's about trials, convictions, and victims keeping their rights and dignity. Canada has issues there to.

I knew the thread would turn into this.
Rape accusations vs false rape accusations are absolutely nowhere near equal (0.2%-2% depending on where you look are "unfounded"), but keep telling yourself that so you can doubt a victim every time she says she was raped.

Correction, it varies so much by methodology, which everyone agrees has never been done right, that you might as well throw out the entire statistic. You have also chosen a range encompassing only the extreme low end to the accepted average, improperly skewing it down. Plenty of equally credible studies found "false" rape charges to be in the 5-7% range, and higher among high school and college age individuals. However, again, there has never, to my knowledge, been a proper study that deals with all variables, leaving it wide open, and thus, irrelevant from a scientific standpoint.

Also, you fail to make a valid comparison. A valid comparison would be the proportion of false rape charges that harm those accused to ones where the victim is retaliated against and/or the perpetrators are given preferential treatment, which are actually similarly rare. The vast majority of valid rape charges are investigated and, when possible, prosecuted. It's just that rape is hard to prove, especially as most occur among people who already know each other and thus can be brought down to a he said/she said, which the law finds in favor of the defendant.
At least we're not following Sharia, where it would be, for all intents and purposes, impossible for the victim to prove, and with fatal consequences for failing to do so.

I know people who experienced these exact things in school. I can't say that all schools are like this, but it just shows how although education is supposed to be the path to success, things like this happen far too often.
