| The setting in anime that resonates the best with the Japanese fans who actually buys anime is the school-based setting. This is due to fans being most familiar with this setting, since they were once students themselves at school. After all, the buying audience is not teenagers. Teenagers are most likely to buy manga or LN instead... since they are many times cheaper than a normal 12 episode anime (typically ￥44,100 or ~428 USD, without a discount applied yet). The anime buying audience is in fact older, and is part of a niche market. |

| Entrance exams and the ridiculous workload in university take any fun out of that setting. Post-university life in Japan is even worse, with 70-80 hour work weeks being the norm. So what you get instead is elementary and secondary school content, the only time when Japanese people are actually able to relax and have fun with their lives. In the west, there is very little pressure in the college setting which is why western media constantly idolises it. We also have much more flexibility in the young adult stage as a whole. Japanese society works very differently than ours. That, and the majority of otaku are manchildren who refuse to grow up past the mindset of a 15-year-old. |

Yeah, I've noticed that being mentioned sometimes in anime (I have very little knowledge of Japan outside of anime). Seems kind of sad. Personally I have no idea what it'd be like to have a huge workload. I'm graduating university in CS this year, but I am still able to squeeze all my school stuff into like 3-4 days, since I skip a lot of lectures and do many homework/projects in a row rather than a little every day. So that's like 3-4 completely free days a week. Stress is not in my vocabulary. :P |
