Generally you won't notice a difference between 720/1080p if you are sitting more than 3 metres (10 feet) away from the TV screen and the TV screen size is less than 1.07 metres (42 inches). You will notice a difference on a laptop screen as you are usually sitting close enough to notice.

With the drop in frame rates, it is to do with your machine not being able to handle the video bit-rate since you are just using VLC. If you were using MPC-HC and external filters for high quality playback, then your machine would struggle even more.

720p vs 1080p for particular anime, it really depends on how much upscaling was done from the original video source. Older anime were made in lower resolutions, which would make DVD 480p look better than 720p/1080p (even more!) for instance. Newer anime are made in higher resolutions, where 720p/1080p will look better depending on what resolution it was made at. Video bit-rate also makes a huge difference as well, particularly in more action scenes.

Thanks for your input. I also thought it would be a good idea to watch BDs in 1080p and normal releases in 720p, I already have Bakemonogatari BDs in 1080p and it looks great. So what media player should I use to play 1080p in my laptop? I also tried the HDMI cable with my sister's laptop and it just doesn't look really good compared to the PS3 and I'm not just talking about the videos I played in the laptop but even the pictures and games.

This is a good guide for high quality playback. There's an installation option (Kawaii Codec Pack) for people who don't want to do lots of customisation.
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=516729&show=0

I'm not sure what the PS3 has for video playback, but that is to do with what settings you have in your VLC player. If the PS3 looks better to you, then it shouldn't really matter how you play it. However, if the PS3 can't play certain files... then i'd advise to follow the guide I linked (or install the Kawaii Codec Pack) to watch 1080p from your laptop -> HDMI -> TV.

I voted other. It used to be my laptop (hooked up to my TV) but now I use my PS3 due to the Crunchyroll app. That's far and away my #1 device. Distant second would be my phone as I use that if I'm visiting family or something and want to watch anime.

Either Computer or Laptop. Nothing is more enjoyable to watch anime than either of the two that I mentioned.

The Art of Shipping is no mere game. It can be small skirmishes to huge nation size wars.
Of course some will claim their ship is the BATTLESHIP but they all do. This is why battles occur because of factions fighting each other to justify their favourite ship.
And thus SHIP to SHIP combat occurs almost anytime even now.
Beware, Threading into the Shipping battlefield will be bloody.... What are you waiting for?

I've been using my tablet to watch anime more lately out of convenience (laziness) but my preference is my computer.
