In the preview video of the live action movie "Dragon Ball Evolution", Toriyama Akira gave a comment to the movie.

Toriyama Akira said:

As a creator of the original manga, I'm puzzled by the script and the characters, but the director, the actors and the other staff are all excellent. It'll be a correct choice for me and the Dragon Ball fans to watch the movie as a "New Dragon Ball" belonging to a totally different sphere from the original. Perhaps, the movie will turn out to be a great masterpiece thanks to the efforts of the staff. I'm looking forward to seeing it!!

Well, not many people are going to bash on a movie based off their own work (except for Alan Moore)...

Did they change the name recently or has it always been DB: Evolution?

Time table

"Sometime ago" - read the announce that there was going to be a live action DBZ movie
Sept 11, 2009 - I watched the trailer "NO please anything but that.... PLEASE"

I showed it to everyone else that's apart of the anime community at my college and got almost the same outcome

It would be better if the show was viewed as an Alternative from the original Dragon Ball shows but problem is the people just can't do that. There will always be comparisons to the show that we had all loved.

Yep. He pretty much wanted everyone to know that he is not related to this movie in any way, shape or form. Chalk this live-action in the failure column. Though I guess I should wait till I actually see it first before making my verdict.

This is exactly what I'm thinking as well.

As for the movie, I'll only be renting the DVD.

Same. If it had been a really good Dragonball movie I wouldn't have bothered. I don't so much care for DBZ anymore. But now that it's pretty much assured to be a horrible disaster of an lol, yeah I'll probably torrent this.

Y'know, I could see this movie for free since I work at a movie theater. But I don't think I will. I don't even want to waste my time with this obviously soulless remake.

It's not just Toriyama-san, I am quite puzzled by it myself. Originally, I had a different idea and impression of the live-action movie 2-3 months ago but..

Recently, I got a glimpse of some screenshots of the movie and the game. I was shocked and speechless. It could be possibly the worst live-action adaptation ever. In fact, it disgraces the name of Toriyama Akira and his Dragonball masterpiece. How terrible!!

I smelled the crap when I knew Fox was making a live action movie of DBZ. It only got worse when I saw the cast. Poor Chow Yun-Fat and Toriyama-san... this movie is seriously going to look like a theatrical release by the Sci-Fi Channel. Maybe one day they will do it correctly but it's highly doubtful.

I just want to know how you completely screw something up that has two great source materials to work from. Simply condense a saga from the anime even further or split it in half and you have yourself a movie (or two) with the storyboard and pre-production walk through done. Anyways, I too will see this movie (via torrent though) just for the "lol" factor.

I'm gonna restrain of watching the movie coz I know that it would have serious consequences on my mind and my childish perfect picture of world of Dragon Ball, in which perfect men can shoot beams from their hands, eat half of USA's food reserves and blow so hard that the Sun would burn down

I'll watch it just because I *have* to talk about it in my blog xD

Just the idea of "watch it like another dragon ball unrelated to the original" is stupid. It's like "we're only using the name to attract people to see crap =D"

Is it going to be even more of a train wreck than Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is to the original Sailor Moon series? I'm actually getting even more curious if it is XD I mean, I sat through Pretty Guardian the entire time making fun of it and noting all parts where they could have made it better XD

Let's face it, the only reason anyone actually liked anything besides the Original Dragon Ball (so this means Z and GT) anyways is due to sentimental value, i.e. we were all around 10 and would watch any cartoon of well-built flying superheros shoot balls of energy at each other. Hell we probably thought it was just an American cartoon at the time and not some Japanese import.

Also, casting the most serious Asian-American actor in the history of Asian-American actors as the old perverted turtle hermit is a huge no-go.

Now thats the correct treatment.

I find it funny on how people bash everything forgetting the simple fact - its adaptation. Of course it will be different.

Did people rage when fox butchered X Men? Did People rage when fox butchered Spiderman? Some might have.

Were those trilogies bad? In no way they were bad. They were a good quality action movies(except for Spiderman3 because director tried to be more faithful to comics) and that stands as a fact.

I see no big problems with DBE - its a big budgeted action movie based on Piccolo saga. I will be sure to see it in theaters, because the action scenes in newest trailer seem to be breathtaking to say for least.

Most people here seem to mistake Toriyama's message as hatred, disappointment or etc, however I see his words differently:

He is saying that all the fans should not be offended by this and should just count it as a different take on DB, hence the adaptation.
