This episode has psychological elements of the in-separation of the wired world from the real world. For many people, this is a reality, or a result of the longitude living in the wired world caused due to the(weird) Navi OS system. They see Lain as a God who governs, a god who asks the wrongdoers, a god who evaluates the actions.

The "Knights maybe made this god," and they now want Lain to take it over. They gave lain the moderator power to govern the wired world, as She can even malfunction the Navi or operator of other users.

This is how I see Lain. Till now.

honestly not 100% sure what's happening, but i'll try and guess. People who are playing these games on the wired are getting it confused with reality which led to more suicides. Lain on the other hand, is getting more immersed into the digital world. The "other lain" is probably also her but through the digital world. idk if that makes sense but you see her interacting with the boy who killed the young girl bc he thought he was playing the game. Lain has a different persona from reality compared to the digital. Everybody in the show goes "she's changed" and yes...into the other lain. ever since she got the navi, she spent more time in the digital world and looking at other people's stuff which refers back to when lain told the shooter "we're all connected" idk if that makes sense or not lol

Seems there are multiple Lains (omnipresent?) and the world is actually digital. Interesting...

This anime seems to have a bit of a transhumanist feel to it.

I feel like the conversation between lain and her father summed it up best, lain is slowly losing her perception of reality because of her interactions in wired. That final scene wasn't what actually happens. When her friends commented on the fact that they thought her personality is changing it is probably because her online persona is blending with her real-life persona. It's similar to perfect blue in that regard.

This episode is called Religion. So it seems that Lain follows the Weird as some sort of religious practice. By doing so, she isolates herself from the real world (friends and family). Quite funny cause this show mirrors our world today (despite it airing in the 90s), and it will only get worse.

Her new changing personality is getting interesting.

The OP is so good. And really liking the story so far, kinda reminds me of David Lynch and the blurred lines between what is real and what is fantasy/illusion/digital (in this case).

Lain is becoming more corrupted by this Wired thing. Devices, computers everywhere in her room.
And it seems Lain has different personalities, not just 2 but probably more perhaps?

I'm starting to know what's going on but there's still some confusing stuff that me mind can't comprehend lol but there's still a lot to discover so.

Damn Lain got so tech-savvy so quick( her other persona ofc)and she can use telekinesis now. Those men in black suits are probably the government's secret agents and they're after Lain cause she's able to exist in the real world and the Wired. Lain's motives for all this remain unknown.

The Phantoma part was confusing. How did the kid enter the game(or was it just an illusion). The real and tbe virtual worlds are merging now and I'm utterly stumped.

Definitely glad this isn't airing right now or something, I can't imagine how much harder it'd be to follow only getting to see one episode a week

Alls I can really gather is Lain is changing, has supernatural powers, her parents know what's going on and there's two creepy guys stalking her house?

Don't understand the bit with the little girl or that maze thing at all though

Yup, it seems we are getting close to what is presented here with AR/VR, voice assistant and speech synthesiser+simultaneous translation enabled AI. Everything nowadays seems to be connected to internet. One thing that seems missing for now is the widespread use of mobile devices.

GOTCHA

I like how Lain just puts one of your common household fans in front of her computer to cool it down. She's going to need a lot more than fan to cool it down once she goes VR MODE or heck even becomes ONE WITH THE WEB. No amount of water cooling is going to be able to handle the power of Lain

While it certainly has its fair share of mind-f*ckery that typically accompanies your so-called 'elitist' (for lack of a better term) titles, I still find it more accessible than Texhnolyze which I finished recently. Perhaps having more of a school setting makes it easier to get into rather than some dark depressing dystopian underground city. Or maybe it's because I had to watch it in the odd resolution of 474p in all of its grainy-effects glory, while I fortunately have been able to watch Lain in a certainly more acceptable resolution of 1080p.

Honestly didn't expect the process of Lain assimilating into the internet to go this fast. We're already making major strides in that regard. And then meanwhile we see the dad checking up on Lain, clearly seeing her begin her descent into utter madness, and pretty much just go "eh, whatever I guess"

This just gets better and better. This dialogue just captures our whole lives honestly:

Dad:  When it's all said and done, the Wired is just a medium to communication and the transfer of information. You mustn't confuse it with the real world.
Lain: You're wrong. The border between the two isn't all that clear. I'll be able able to enter it soon. In full range, Full motion. I'll translate myself into it.

Now things are picking up with some active intrigue, whereas past episodes were very slowly. Lain is beginning to become something else, and I'm still interested to find out why her, and what her father knows, as he seems to fear what will happen next for Lain but is also the guy who let her keep the Psiche. The world is expanding too, with the game world of the Wired being explored. It was quite cool seeing that world in first person, it really added to this unreliable and fearful world these characters are experiencing. I was initially going to stop watching episodes for the day at Episode 03's end, but the series strangeness, atmosphere, and mystery intrigued me enough to continue.

Seeing Lain explode the piece on the stalking man's head was cool as hell, but I wonder how she could fully achieve that? Maybe she's becoming more intertwined with the Wired. The conversation between Lain and her dad was one of the best parts of this episode if I'm being honest lmao

Still absolutely loving the OP and partially wondering if any of the Phantoma shots shown were parts of an existing video game or not (though I'm not sure if that would have plot relevance lmao)

So she's going by an adult when she's gathering information.

I guess in the end she hacked those guys eye laser and made them go away.

Also her dad knows she's beyond recovery. Internet addiction at it's finest.

It's intereseting how a 1998 show foreshadowed our actual reality... I mean, not all the NAVI sci-fi stuff, but the metaphorical connections between all of us.
It's intriguing how the plot is developing; I'll assume that Lain suffers from schizofrenia (I hypotyze that by seeing how everyone saw another person with Lain's aesthetic but another personality)
