Meh, its more weird than disturbing. Some scene (especialy disturbing gore part) are obscure and abstract. It also fails to set the mood. Being an old pre 2000 anime done by one man, it cant be helped. Might as well read the manga instead.

Those who want gory stuff but dont want still images go watch/rewatch corpse party instead

Just watched it and honestly it isn't remotely as bad as people make it out to be. The gore isn't even realistic and they were all illusions anyway except for the animals.
So I guess people find unrealistic gore disturbing?
The only thing that could warrant a reaction is the 'offscreen' sexual abuse of Midori before the dwarf man arrived and maybe the puppies getting brutally killed.

I would recommend it just for the sake of it but don't expect anything much as the whole thing is confusing as hell.

The reason this is a masterpiece is because this isn't some bull shit story. It's something that's real. Even his own people detested the anime and manga but, the deed is done. It's not just a story it's an reality we vanquished.

The story is dark, its suppose to be, it shows a realistic horror that has likely happened in the real world, its interesting, its a 7/10 from me,though unforgettable, highly recommend if you want a impactful story.

I want to know which specific scenes got this movie banned, in a nation which has an entire industries based on animation of adults banging under-age kids, and mixing graphic horror/gore with porn.

All I can think of is the 'violence against animals' angle of the puppy-stomping scene. But Hokuto no Ken showed gory scenes of dogs getting dismembered, and I'm pretty sure that showed on broadcast tv in Japan, about a decade before this. And it definitely didn't get banned.

Japan's censorship laws are completely bizarre.

It wasn’t even that bad. To me, a well developed plot and characters that lead to a dark chemistry hit harder than something disturbing popping up merely for shock value. I would say its unnecessary weird at best.

I dunno much about "hentai" anime since I'm more familiar with manga/visual novels, but it seems pretty mild compared to some shit. There's a lot of stuff with extreme detail that has gore/necrophilia/scat/etc. Dustmania Grotesque comes to mind, contains skull-fucking.
