In a panel held on Aug 10th at Otakon, director Watanabe Shinichiro, best known for directing Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, announced his new work, an original TV anime series named "Space☆Dandy", will premiere January next year. In the panel, a trailer video with key visuals and character designs was also showed. The anime is a comedy inspired by old school '70s SF and is about Dandy, "the dandiest man in universe", who went around the universe hunting aliens with his robot QT and a cat alien named Meow. It will be made by studio BONES and involves a number of key staff from Cowboy Bebop.

Staff information:

Studio: BONES
General Director: Watanabe Shinichiro
Director: Natsume Shingo
Scriptwriters: Satoh Dai, Nobumoto Keiko, and Ueno Kimiko
Character Design: Itoh Yoshiyuki
Spaceship Design: Thomas Romain
Theme Song: Okamura Yasuyuki

Space☆Dandy on MAL
Modified by Naruleach, Aug 11, 2013 8:02 PM
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

More Watanabe Shinichiro anime utilizing the adjective "dandy" ???

Yeah I'm in.

(PS: He does look quite dandy. I find their advertised levels of dandiness fulfilled)

Space Dandy is...a dandy guy in the space.

It feels like watching Lupin doing Spike in more troublesome manner.

Count me in!

Haha, "Space dandy is...a dandy guy in the space." :)) Dandy sounds like an old-school gentleman, the cool term nowadays is "Metro" :D

Anyways, the anime is filled with Bebob and Champlo vibes. Seeing the director and the staffs, I can regard this as a Bebob sequel with less serious tone and more hilarity.

Doesn’t look that interesting at all but Bones?Damn, now I’m conflicted.

Watanabe has be quoted as saying the anime was "not an anime to be taken seriously."

So not really expecting much.

i think you misunderstand what he's saying. i interpret that as 'it's going to be lighthearted and fun'. i'm certain he and the other staffers are taking it very seriously

And the interesting upcoming series news just keeps pouring in. Can't say enough about the timing of this cause to be honest I've been kind of down on anime stuff this season with not much airing to be excited about.

King of expecting the Boobies bar thing will be the main thing people remember... Retro Sci-Fi in the form of Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw star were my first exposure to anime so I'd like to see them reprised with modern methods. Bones has always been awesome on animation -- it's their story that usually needs work. It looks like this will be mostly tongue-in-cheek comedy so maybe it will work.

Pretending to have some sort of "enthrallment" based on a 45 second PV that was filmed by handcam on a projector screen wont get any of you street cred.

I'll wait til more info is available before I pretend to be excited.

Attempting to police people's feelings over the internet through some sort of lame tough guy routine also does not do much for your "street cred" which is not a phrase that should be used in the context of anime viewing unless you were attempting to be funny all along I suppose.

What a very un-dandy comment. Tsk tsk.

all i see here are people saying "this looks good" which seems perfectly reasonable to me, with or without much info. i think even without the PV, knowing the staff involved would be enough for people to express a degree of excitement anyway. seems to me you've got a pole up your ass

It sounds fairly dull. That's just the description, though.

I'll be sure to try it since I haven't seen much like that.

I haven't seen any one his works, but they have been praised greatly. It's just that this doesn't seem like something I would enjoy nor does it sound very exciting.

I do, however, want to try new things.

So what? A total of one person? I was the only one who mentioned anything about the animation. And dude even with the above average animation shown in the PV aside, BONES is known for delivering excellent sakuga.

I have no doubts that Watanabe will take full advantage of this studio's capabilities.

Shake it baby, you know what I like.

But seriously, Watanabe Shinichiro doing a project set in space, with a catgirl that isn't a slut, comedic, animated by Bones. Just have to hope there will be gorgeous music and this will go down in history.

Don't exaggerate now.
Surely there is more than jack shit visible in that video, if you can't see anything then you might want to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor.

Gingaaaaaaaaaaaa Bishounennnnnnnnnnnnn
Despite that being meh for me overall, there really was some top notch moments of animation at times.

Solvite you make it sound like these "hipsters" went to your house and kicked your puppy or something.
Okay that's gone but I did read it.

Anyone claiming to have any idea what the animation will be like based on a hand cam filmed side view of a projector is pulling nothing out of thin air.

Okay I went along with this at first to explain my reasoning, but if you really can't see the video well enough to notice the animation quality then you need to see a optometrist. Please realize you are completely alone with your "I can't see it so nobody else can see it" argument.

SolviteSekai said:
Unless you/they mean ART STYLE which also looks pretty archaic, though that's not necessarily a bad thing.

No I don't, I am talking about the animation.

SolviteSekai said:
A better example of what is going on in this thread, is that the director of cowboy bebop and bones are listed, so the hipsters are here in force claiming to know things they don't know based on a minute long clip.

What is speculation?

Anyone else hoping that Watanabe will be roping in Kanno Yoko for the music again?
