So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Very nice sales for Madoka. Knew the BD prediction would be underestimated for Madoka. Should hit 90k in the 2nd week I would expect, since the BD Regular Edition sales will be revealed on Thursday.

Love Live! v5 has the best 1st week sales (excluding v1 of course)!

RailgunS v1 BD beats Railgun v1 BD 1st week. Huge drop on DVD though...

OreImo. v2 sees a drop from v1 as expected.

OreGairu. v2 should add more in the coming weeks, since there has been some stock issues observed at storefront apparently.

Date A Live v2 drop wasn't that bad. The DVD actually sold a tiny bit more than v1 in the 1st week.

No big surprise when I saw Madoka BD sell like nuts.

...but DAMN, Toriko's movie ED on top 5 chart!? Is this has something to do with Kpop influence?

Thinking about buying Gundam AGE Memory of Eden soon since I heard they did Asemu's and Zeheart's story better than the anime. I'm not one for recaps, but since Asemu and Zeheart were my favorite characters plus 1 whole hour of new material if I like what I see fansubbed I'll be sure to buy. I just hope it has subs on the disk like the TV series does.

Not really surprised about Madoka I only care about the third movie since its a sequel (I think).

Free!'s OP over 21k? This is just great. A very strong second week! I wonder if it can add more next week?

Karneval's BDs should put Volume 3 at a respectable number. And it might add more next week.

I know that. I should have made myself clearer. I meant, I'd wait till Thursday to get the BD sales for Karneval's volume 3.

Singles often rank all the way down into weeks with 200-300 copies sold, so it'll be on the charts for a while yet. Tracking it on this site will be useful once it drops off the higher threshold charts.

PMMM selling this well was expected but... that's still crazy for recap movies, even if those weren't just some lazy recaps. Either way, I'll never cease to be happy about its sales.

Also yay for Railgun S selling better than the first season in week 1. Now let it keep it up (and please expand to the DVD front as well) and JC Staff might hopefully learn a lesson on how they should adapt things properly. Here's hoping.

You are right. Corrected.

For Railgun2, chances is it will sell less than season 1 but if it is selling not more than say 20% I would say it is still successful as far as sequel is concerned.

Regarding Railgun's sales vs wk1s1, I probably wouldn't read too much into that, for two reasons.

One is that it's expected that a sequel will be more front-loaded than the first season. The fanbase is already there, and they're more likely to be buying in week one than coming on board later.

Second point is that if you include the DVDs it sold less, not more:
Season 1 first week was 13814 + 6523 = 20,337.
Season 2 first week was 14646 + 2074 = 16,720.

And s1v1 added a lot after the first week, ranking 11 times to sell 26,886 total. Meanwhile it would be considered pretty good if s2v1 did around 20-21k total.

Not necessarily a bad sequel drop all in all, but it's an uphill climb to get anywhere near s1's 24,495 average (not counting the 35k OVA disc).
I see. Thanks for the insight on that one. I didn't really have the DVD sales figures for S1 in my mind - all I really knew was S2 was lower since people were saying so. Still... what you say for sequels, while being completely true, can also work the other way around. For instance, the reason most sequels are rated higher in this site is because many people who didn't like the first seasons completely disregarded them. Not saying that would overcome the established fanbase effect, but it's also something to take into account.
Though really... I'd love to see its sales get better.

Also, jmal, considering you're one of the sales experts around: is it usual for the sales to raise or drop in later volumes compared to the first?

Kpop influence is not as powerful as a few years ago, particularly since these days the relationship between the two countries often gets strained. But some groups still do well in Japan, and it seems FTISLAND is one such group.

So, 14,849 for Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border:1 Ghost Pain.

would that be considered average/good for it being the first in a 4 part movie/OVA series?
Im just hoping it gets enough sales for them to start considering SAC 3 lol

The point about why sequels often score higher in popularity rankings like here on MAL is true, but I don't think it has a relationship to sales. People who dislike the first season ans ignore the second weren't buying the first season anyway. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.

is it usual for the sales to raise or drop in later volumes compared to the first?

Barring special exceptions like event tickets or unaired bonus episodes or other special extras in later volumes, the first volume usually sells the best and other volumes gradually decrease until some stable point.
No, I think you understood the point correctly and you're right in what you said. Though I was referring to people who might not have watched it while airing... If such people still exist.

Also thank you for clarifying my question. Though btw, while rather unfortunate, this actually seems to corroborate the point of some people buying the first volume regardless. It just seems rather strange to simply buy the first BD volume with full knowledge of the series and then stop collecting the series halfway through.

The trend of anime disc buying has shifted decisively to BD since a few years ago (yes, when Bake went on sale) largely due to otaku being picky on video quality and they deem BD to be the more suitable media to watch their favorite anime (many testify that once they get used to the BD quality there is no turning back to the "inferior DVD quality"). That said, still there are people who do not mind the video quality as much and prefer the cheaper price of DVD. And in particular female-oriented shows usually show much stronger performance on DVD sales relative to BD, perhaps because to a lot of female fans video quality is not that critical a factor.

It's also hilarious how you haven't even seen more than 1 episode of it yet felt the need to offer your valuable and respected opinion on the matter.

You know, more than a handful of people would respect your opinion more if you actually tried contributing to discussions or offering something more than one liners that are clearly designed to get some kind of response.

Perhaps this is due to a personal need for attention from others, but since you call yourself a reviewer and appear to be a passionate fan of the medium, maybe you're just a bit too tsun to try joining everyone else. It's a shame, because I think you'd actually be an extremely interesting person to discuss things with.
-----------------------------
Anyhow, I'm definitely happy to see that so many good shows are selling decently! Having just finished Love Live!, I can say that those sales are much deserved (totally looking forward to season 2). Also quite happy to see Yahari and Date a Live.

Valvrave's sales are kind of disappointing. I swear there's some sort of mini-boycott going on or they have something against that particular writer like they did with Level's 5's Hino and AGE as there are a ton of negative reviews specifically calling the writer Okouchi out for the discs on Amazon.jp and a lot of support for the more flat out negative reviews. Not going to lie if it weren't for Love Live and a couple of other things I'd be ever so slightly worried Sunrise has dug themselves into a bit of a reputation hole with some angry vengeful otaku since Gundam AGE or something. At least it's doing better than Zegapain did though and the models are what's important I suppose, but I think it deserves a lot better for it's efforts.

Madoka movie doing next to nothing with DVD's is kind of an interesting statistic. I would have predicted somewhere over 10K but I guess people really aren't interested in anything other than that limited edition. This is definitely the super hardcore buyer audience turning out for this as evidenced by the guy that bought 14 discs alone.

^ Honestly I think you may have thought too much about the reason behind the not so inspiring sales of Valvrave. I don't think there is actually a willful act of organized effort to stop buying Valvrave discs (which is what the word boycott entails) because they hate this writer etc. We know Amazon.jp can have a lot of troll reviews (just check those negative reviews for Kokoro Connect or Sakurasou) which we are not even sure actually ever planned to buy the discs in the first place. What I see is just that people watch it and deem the show not worth paying for the disc, and some of those people may indeed not have a lot of confidence with Okouchi (but that does not mean that all these people would not give him any chance to prove himself). I am in full sympathy with you that Valvrave is misunderstood but then I think we can also agree that this show indeed takes its chances and may have tried a bit too hard to surprise its viewers (and suffering backlash as a result).

This is definitely the super hardcore buyer audience turning out for this as evidenced by the guy that bought 14 discs alone.
Though I doubt he will end up keeping all 14 sets. Most likely he will just keep the extras he want to collect and sell all but 2 or 3 sets. Also, these days almost all limited edition sells vastly more than the regular edition unless it is some very mainstream titles (like One Piece) so I would say that those buying the limited edition of Madoka movies are indeed fans, but all "super hardcore buyer"? No, only some of them.

Looking good so far for Love Live, Ro-Kyu-Bu and Symphogear G, almost the same number again for the Ro-Kyu-Bu character CDs, sounds like most fans bought all 5 instead of just CDs for 1 or 2 characters. Dimension tripper sold terribly, granted it's average at best, but it should've sold a little bit better.

With if I go with the buyers are reasonable and discerning perspective (which at this point feels almost like playing devil's advocate I'm sad to say) I would suggest that they want the second half to wrap up and tie everything together since the first half kind of left us in the lurch and uncertain of the fate of favorite characters or anything really, which would make it tough to commit to a buy at this stage considering those episodes are largely setup, but we'll see once the second half is out. They plan to take feedback into account going into the second season after all.

Without going into any sort of spoilers I'm one of those people that don't like the split idea cour much and find it to be an artificial one especially concerning how that last scene played out almost like it was added to serve as a divider between what was happening with the major characters and the start of the second season to close things out.

Also that Madoka movie set is actually kind of a good deal if you're a huge Madoka fan because you're essentially getting two complete movies with extras which also double as a compilation boxset for the TV series for slightly less than the cost of two volumes of a TV series (4 only episodes only usually) when you add the discounts in. I'm starting to notice this boxset model a little bit more lately for first edition releases and can't help but wonder if it might be catching on.

As an aside I'm used to Sunrise mecha series causing people to fly off the handle and bring the torches and pitchforks as an almost involuntary reaction to their very existence so when I say Valvrave is far from a unique situation you ought to believe me. For whatever reason they can really bring the pure unadulterated hate in a bloody hurry and it still baffles me to this day as to why people get so completely bent out of shape (read the Gundam 00 movie thread if you ever get a chance as an example) about their stuff often very early on and over seemingly nothing at all. I know they tend to do things a little different from expectations and how most studios operate with their TV shows but still.

@Kaioshin_Sama: the 23% sale drop of Valvrave vol 2 from vol 1 is pretty normal so I'm not worry about the number too much. Vol 1 is getting to 8.5K combined sale right now. If you compare that number to other Sunrise's mecha or shows for that matter, that is at the low side. However, it's still head and shoulders above many shows from many other studios, just look at Majestic Prince. Some studios, such as Manglobe, have dreamed many years to reach the number Valvrave got. In addition. since it's a Sunrise's original show, the studio definitely ranks pretty high on the Production Committee. Thus, they keep more money from the sale of dics, not to mention revenue from Valvrave's OP (which is phenomenal), goes to the Committee as well.

I, too, think the show is misunderstood from the first impression. But I also think that many people are holding off on buying because the show is not done yet, and they want to see how the story goes before buying. Depending on how cour 2 performs, many fans will come out of the wood to buy the complete set from vol 1. A spectacular ending can easily add another 3K to every volume and push the average over 10K. Even with a lackluster ending, I'm optimistic that at least vol 1 will reach 10K .

1. I can't afford Vol. 2+ on release date so I'll buy it later when I have money. But later may come after the title has stopped ranking, so we don't see the sale.

2. I want to support the show but can only afford one volume - it's better than nothing!

3. I like the show, but not enough to buy the BDs. However vol. 1 comes with some awesome extra (artbox, drama cd, event ticket, etc) that's worth the cost. I'll just get vol. 1.

4. I started buying this show but then the new season started and I saw a lot of shows I liked better and needed to save up for.

5. I bought vol. 1 while the show was still airing. After vol. 1 came out the show went downhill and I decided to stop importing but it was too late to cancel vol. 1.

6. I was hit by a truck and died after vol. 1 came out so I couldn't buy more.

Some combination of them is likely to be part of the explanation behind sales drops.

Thanks for the reasonable hypothesis. No. 6 is pretty amusing :))

I think you should add Vol 1's discounts as one of the reasons too.
