Those are some nice shades..

They actually used some decent OST imo this episode during scenes like this:

So many fourth walls. Oh and that scene with the carrying like princess/heaven or whatever was kinda amusing I guess.

Learnt about dinosaurs. And they say anime isn't educational.
Since there was a 'break' from episode 2, really did enjoy this episode!

Fantastic episode. It was well worth the two week wait. By the way, either
yesterday or today was Botan's 17th birthday, her voice actress, I mean. For
some reason, the blood and the dead bodies made me think of Elfen Lied. I
may be reaching here, but I wonder whether they ran into some problems
getting the episode accepted for broadcast. It is one thing to have blood and
decapitation in Gantz. It is very different to be shocked right in the middle of
an anime where you expect to see nothing but cute girls doing cute things.
Anyways, happy 17th birthday, Botan! ( 相内沙英 / Sae Aiuchi )

Here is a message posted on Facebook from Sae to all of her fans:

This episode was way better than the last two, although Natsuki is still kind of annoying, but she's tolerable.

I loved how heart flower petals were flying around when Botan carried Karin up the stairs. Some discipline. xD

WAIT. Botan's voice actress is 17?! That's awesome, happy birthday!!

The opposite for me, this is the only episode that made laugh....

I don't think the show is bad at all it just the voices are kinda bad as expected from new seiyuus.

Or maybe the show is too clique having 5 girls doing random things in a room...

Botan was teaching Sakura some self-defence techniques. At 04:45 there was that
scene where Botan described how she could twist a person's hand and make them
expand and burst. Then there was a black-and-white scene showing the pixelated
outline of a man, and you could hear him grunting just before his body exploded.
The voice actor that they used was the director, Hikaru Sato (佐藤光). This is a
piece of trivia that they tweeted just as the episode finished airing. Here is what
the tweet said:

【今日の小ネタ】
牡丹に爆散される男の声は佐藤監督です!

This is one of those show that you want to like but there is just something missing. Maybe it is the mono-tonality of the voice actresses, maybe it is trying too hard to be strange, or maybe it is that the MC just doesn't work as the "straight person", (or maybe I have just seen too many of these types of shows), I am not sure what it is exactly but something about this show just isn't clicking for me.

I find it interesting that so many people are still saying that this show is unfunny (though they're still watching?).

I mean, sure, it isn't really laugh out loud funny or anything, but it's at least chuckle-worthy (for me). Besides, only very rarely (4 times to be exact) has a comedy actually made me laugh out loud (that seems like a very high standard to hold every single comedy show to). So as long as it can stay lighthearted and not dip into "not funny at all" territory, then this show will be just fine in my book.

As for the episode, I thought it was much better than the previous two. Hopefully there won't be any more unexpected breaks.

I decided to start re-watching Kitakubu from the very start of Episode 1 up to
the end of Episode 3. I believe that it can be entertaining, but you have to get
"tuned in" to it. It gets a little better after seeing it a second or third time.

Beyond that, I think that Kitakubu is actually breaking some new ground. There
are a number of elements that I have never seen before, or else am only seeing
very recently. Keep in mind that I am talking about a series that is of the genres
"cute girls doing cute things", "random school club" and "slice of life".

Anyways, here is my list:

- Human body sound from a girl (Botan in her bedroom). It might have been a
stomach growl since she was hungry.
- Blood due to an injury. This is brand-new. Normally, we only see blood coming
from the nose due to sexual excitement. The normal "code" for an injury to the
head is a big bump on the head. Otherwise, it is a giant bandage.
- Dead bodies or even references to characters being dead. That is what those
white signs said. Up to now, death has been a taboo subject.
- "mini-ecchi". I don't know a better phrase for this. Kitakubu is not ecchi. On
the other hand, it is not not ecchi. You have to look very, very closely and
make extensive use of the pause and rewind features. This is the first time
that I have seen a series that is in-between the traditional categories.
- Variation of school uniform skirt lengths. In fact, I noticed two other anime
series right now that have variable skirts lengths. Watamote does and so does
Love Lab. Aren't uniforms supposed to be uniform?
- Also, some girls wear a long tie and some girls wear a bow. Is this some kind
of option? Or does it signify something?
- There is no noticeable variation in the girls' bra cup sizes. In every other anime
series, you have A-cup characters and F-cup characters and nothing in between.

So, despite some negative things that can be said about it, I now am starting to
feel that Kitakubu is breaking new ground, has an unmistakeable freshness, and
is aggressively pushing in directions that have previously been out of bounds.
So now I am starting to feel a bit more interested to see what other surprises
they have in store. Let's give up the expectation that we will be rolling on the
floor laughing. Also, Natsuki is not going to tone down her "tsukkomi" retorts
any sooner than she is going to trim her ahoge*. Just cover your ears right after
every "boke" remark.

* ahoge = hair antenna

Hum, I'm liking the show so far, and I laugh while watching it more than I should, but I don't think you're right here.

Yuyushiki, last season, had quite a lot of talks about death. In Aiura, also last season, girls wore both ties and bows. Stomachs growling is actually quite commonly used to make a girl feel embarrassed.

I didn't notice much ecchi-ness from the show. I'll try to pay more attention to that.

And yeah, those different skirts always bug me. Yua's skirt from Chaos;Head made me cringe every time she appeared.

I think you might be missing the point a little bit. The idea behind this show is to subvert anime tropes in a clever way. For instance, the stairs part probably references a training scene in a standard shounen anime and how those can be overly dramatic at times.

This show is a lot more clever than people give it credit for. It has a binary weakness that holds it back a bit. The first is that the art not elite. If this show had GJ-bu or To Love-Ru Darkness character designs, that would be a big upgrade to the show. The second factor is that the voice acting isn't great. Sometimes an all rookie VA cast works (Seitokai no Ichizon first season) but this performance isn't as strong. This show could really use a HanaKana or Yui Ogura, or maybe both.

All in all, I still like this show. This show has started to grow on me and I could see that becoming more and more the case as time moves on. The first three episodes have impressed me overall.

Hi Tulicloure. Thank you for your Post #41. I accept all of your comments with
gratitude. Clearly I have a lot of work to do:

- Re-watch all of Yuyushiki, in particular to pick out the death references. It really
surprises me to hear you mention that. Yuyushiki is of particular interest because
it also falls clearly into the same sub-genre of GIRLS+CLUB+SOL.

- I had never heard of Aiura. I quickly checked on Wikipedia and it appear to be
interesting and relevant. I'll have a look at some episodes.

- I can think of a "stomach growling" scene in one episode of Marimite. On the
other hand, it was 100% clear that it was Yumi's STOMACH that was growling,
and the sound was not coming from some other source. While I was listening
to the sound that Botan emitted, the origin of the sound was in doubt. So I am
very interested in more information that anybody can offer on that issue.

- Your mention of Yua's skirt in Chaos;Head is interesting, since that disproves
my theory that we never saw non-uniform skirt lengths up until now. But now
that I think about it, in Episode 1 of Ghost Hunt, one student was wearing her
skirt below her knees. Apart from those examples, I have watched many, many
anime series and it has always been the case that all school uniform skirts have
the same length. So when I see Watamote, Love Lab and Kitakubu all with
varying skirt lengths, it is surprising. I wonder if anyone can provide information
about the actual situation in schools in Japan.

- I will list some of the "mini-Ecchi" scenes in Kitakubu, just so you can see what
I mean.

There were quite a lot of them, actually. The girls would jokingly say that they were dying from one or other cause (now that I think about it, Aiura also had one or two of those), have conversations about how each of them would react if the others died, and little scenes like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJaOJ0PuZUo

- I had never heard of Aiura. I quickly checked on Wikipedia and it appear to be

Yeah, do check it! The animation is quite nice to watch, and even if you don't like it, it's just ~5 minutes per episode.

Oh, I guess I'll have to rewatch that part then. Didn't she say something like "I guess it's already lunch time" right after it?

Right. Botan was in her bedroom, practicing her martial arts with the
big punching bag. Then at 15:25 we heard that sound. Right after
that, my subtitles showed that Botan said, "I guess it's lunchtime."

In Japanese, what she said was
そろそろおひるが。
Sorosoro o hiruga.
which means something like, "Have lunch soon."

I am going to watch the official tweets and see if they announce what
that sound actually was.

out of 3 series about cute girls doing cute things (other are Stella and Love Lab, not counting Tamayura as it works in a bit different way) this one is the weakest.
It has some great moments and jokes, along with nice characters interactions.
On the other side they can be irritating or start to reuse jokes too often (ending sequence for example) so far it's not as bad as Yuyushiki, but there is still some time for it. I hope it won't happen thou.

I agree that VA is kind of lacking, same with art but well... can't do much about it and it doesn't ruin the show so far.

The five main voice actresses are really young. Natsuki's is 15 and Botan's
is barely 17. The other three are presumably also very young since no
Japanese Wikipedia pages have been created for them. I am curious why
the producers hired such young performers. Personally, I find it impossible
to criticize the vocal performances when these people are not adults yet.

Natsuki Sendou
voice actress: 木戸衣吹
生年月日 1997年11月14日(15歳)
Age 15

Karin Touno
voice actress: 結名美月
no Japanese Wiki page exists
age not known

Sakura Doumyouji

Botan Oohagi
voice actress: 相内沙英

Age 17

Kurea Kononoe

The voice actress for the white seal is 21. Her name is 市道真央 and she
has been very successful as a gravure idol. Search Google Images and
you can see some very nice photos of her. They are in good taste too.

Maybe because they didn't have enough of money to hire someone more experienced? Visual side points to it also.

Still Sakura is one character I find hard to listen to (at least from time to time). Rest is around being decent, with some ups and downs along the road.
Yet if they are starting... well great for them, with some training they might develop way better in the future :)

I guess this is just another example of how odd I am. I don't have a problem with the voice actresses at all. They seem fine to me.

I saw an Higurashi no Naku Koro ni reference in this episode. Just me?

Here are some things that I have noticed after re-watching Episode 3
several times:

02:23 Natsuki's ahoge flexed due to the supersonic pop bottle cap flying
by and embedding itself in the ceiling. You can also see her ahoge bend
as she walks through a door near the end of the closing credits.
03:42 Sakura's faxed curry poop pile.
07:57 After reading Botan's †INNOCENT DAYS† diary, Sakura lying on floor
surrounded by big pool of blood. But she wasn't dead.
08:55 After reading Botan's †INNOCENT DAYS† diary, Natsuki lying on floor
surrounded by big pool of blood. But she wasn't dead.
10:10 Natsuki and Sakura are apparently dead, both wearing white signs
saying "dead body".
10:57 The scroll on the wall says 金環日食 which is pronounced Kinkan
nisshoku. By itself, 日食 (nisshoku) means "solar eclipse". 金環日食 is an
"annular solar eclipse", which happens when the moon is a bit farther from
the earth than usual so that the sun is not completely blocked out. 金環
means "gold ring". Alternatively, the phrase can be written as 全環日食.
One of these eclipses was actually visible in Tokyo, Japan on May 21, 2012:

12:40 Karin is challenged to climb a flight of stairs by herself. There are no
effective handrails. I myself would be afraid in that situation.
13:50-13:52 You can very subtly but clearly see Karin's white... Non-ecchi
anime series don't show that. Ecchi animes don't show that either since it
is not exciting enough. At least, it would not be subtle. This is intermediate.
15:24 We hear a sound while Botan is exercising with the punching bag in
her bedroom. That sound might be a rumbling in her stomach, but it might
not. One clue might be that her legs are wide open at that moment.

Your mention of Yua's skirt in Chaos;Head is interesting, since that disproves
my theory that we never saw non-uniform skirt lengths up until now. But now
that I think about it, in Episode 1 of Ghost Hunt, one student was wearing her
skirt below her knees. Apart from those examples, I have watched many, many
anime series and it has always been the case that all school uniform skirts have
the same length. So when I see Watamote, Love Lab and Kitakubu all with
varying skirt lengths, it is surprising.

A few anime I can think off the top of my head is Saki and Saki Achiga-hen.

I wonder if anyone can provide information
about the actual situation in schools in Japan.

In Japan, the school skirts are not as short as we can see in many anime.
There are actually rules of how short a girl's skirt can be at school.
Outside of the school premises, it doesn't stop some girls from rolling their skirts up at the waist to make it "look" shorter.
