And this place was one of my biggest procrastinating distractions from school and other stuff in my personal life.... So in a weird way the ban actually helped me. I came back late last year.....mostly because I'm so damn bored at my job and I'm even MORE addicted to the internet than I ever was before. |

Where as the other type, well, I'd be nice build some friendships with anime fans. But not unless they can handle their favorite animes being criticized. As well as offering rational critiques them selves. Heck I criticize my favorite animes myself. True man,none anime is perfect.People shouldn't be so serious about it. |

| Here's the thing. 3 people are in an anime club, watching the same anime, and afterwards there is expected to be a discussion. The first episode isn't even through yet when one of them, from here forth known as John, rolls his eyes and exclaims, "I can't take this any more. The characters are cliche archetypes, the plot is contrived. I can't believe the motivations of any of these characters. It feels as if they are caricature puppets and the director is pulling the strings. The second person, a woman that shall be known as Mary, has a glint in her eyes, "What are you, a critic? Just watch and enjoy the anime." John replies, "I simply can't enjoy an anime that's this badly made. At this point the third person, Sam, seeks mediation. "John, I know what you mean, but despite its flaws, the series seem to be fun, so there is an enjoyment factor. I like it." "That's surprising," says John, "So what do you like about it specifically?" "Well, I just enjoy it. I like the anime. You know when you rate an anime there is the plot, the characters, etc., and then there is how much you enjoy --" "You can't just like the anime," John interjects. Sam appears miffed. "Of course I can! It's just my opinion. Everyone has them." "I understand that it's an opinion," replies John, "but even opinion is informed by something you perceive. It's the plot, the characters, etc., that cause you to enjoy something. They're not separate. Rating an anime based on enjoyment is like tautology, like saying 'I like it because I like it'. That's not a real reason." Mary, who seems left out of the conversation, finds this opportunity to jump in. "You seem to be pretty critical when it comes to anime, John. Why do you still watch anime when you hate it so much? When you rate something you watch so lowly, you're just wasting your life." John replies, "Well, Mary, it's not that I hate anime, but that I like anime, and because I like anime so much I rate it lower." Mary cuts in, "That makes no logical sense." "It makes perfect sense.When I watch something, I'm engaged with the medium. The creators of the show attempt to capture my imagination, and they do it by creating this story and all the details -- these details are not just random. The world that they create, the trees, the lakes, the mansions, the knights, the superpowers, they all draw me into this cohesive world. So if the characters' actions do not make sense, then that's the authors failing to engage --" "You're just trying to put everyone in your shoes. Not every character thinks the way y--" "Listen." John continues, "Of course fictional characters have their own personalities, intelligence, wisdom, and all that. And I know that the fictional universe doesn't operate on the same physics as the real world. But it must be believable through consistency. A wily, calculating character must stay in character, he can't just, for example, all of a sudden forget all about the bad guys. It goes against his very character. And if he does, then the rest of the fictional world should acknowledge that it happens, and the author should eventually divulge a good reason for the occurrence. "I rate anime, not objectively, but I take into account all the aspects of the fictional world, and because I'm constantly thinking while I'm watching it, because I am critical when I see a flaw --but I also recognize when anime is done right-- that shows that I like anime. I rate using the entire scale, because if you don't know what you don't like, how can you possibly know what you do like? But I digress..." John turns to Sam and persists, "What did you like about the show so much that you were willing to give it a 10, the maxim score?" Sam replies, "Like I said, I enjoyed it. It's my opinion. Take it or leave it. You have your opinions, I have mine. You choose to rate anime based on all these factors, I rate based on how much I emotionally enjoy it. That's it. Emotion isn't logical." John retorts, "So since you rely wholly on emotion, you don't actually know why you like anime? You don't know what caused you to enjoy it? Isn't your opinion a bit random, then, it's like saying, 'I like chocolate but I don't know why.'" At this point, Sam is a bit flustered. He genuinely likes anime, but outside of English class in school, he has never applied critical thinking to anything that he does. The anime characters have emotions, so he emphasizes with their plight. To follow a story is to emphasize with its characters, so he doesn't question it. He takes a moment to think about how to retaliate. "So John, you don't get this, do you? I don't need to express how much I like something to like it. I don't talk about how much I like chocolate, I just enjoy it. And besides, you're just judging anime according to your own subjective standards. Just because you think the characters are unrealistic doesn't mean that they actually are. I'm pretty sure the authors know more about their characters than you do, so let the authors tell it how they want. It's not like you're a pro reviewer or some shit." John smirks, "Of course my criticisms are subjective, I never said otherwise. But at least I can describe somewhat what it is that I don't like about something. If you can't put to words why something is better, then how do you even know whether your opinions mean anything? It could just be your mood at the time, not the actual show. Opinions that cannot be defended by reasoning are meaningless. I'm not saying that it discredits your feelings as a person, but that if you can't conceive why you like something, it's odd to even logically conclude that you like it. You should rather say that you feel good watching it, because you don't actually have a defensible position about why the anime is good." Mary, once again with her excellent timing, says, "Everyone is equal, y'know. Respect goes both ways. You can't say that your opinions is better than anyone else' opinions." John sighs, "No Mary, not all opinions are equal. For example, if you opine that the world was created in 6,000 years, we have good scientific evidence that it is not -- built atop the same principles that your mother's doctor use to give her a mammogram. An opinion that is not supported by reasoning is worth less. Sam chimes in, "Yeah. My opinions are as worthy as yours. What are you, some kind of an elitist? You think you're better as a person just because you like certain anime and I don't? Besides, now you think liking anime is the same thing as believing in Creationism. How low can you fall?" "What? Look. It was an analogy to show that opinions must be supported by reason. And I don't think I'm a better person because I like different anime or anything like that, it's just that my opinions are worth more because I'm not offended by thought -- because I engage the medium with both my mind and my emotions. Because I respect the authors enough to hold them to contradicting or inconsistent concepts. As someone that doesn't watch anime critically, I think it's fair to say you aren't engaged in it as much as I am, and you don't respect the integrity of the art form."
