This short movie was absolutely beautiful. The visuals and animation are amazing and the voice acting was done really well. I cried during the scene with Akizuki telling Yukino that he hates her and should've avoided her. God damn that scene was perfect, very emotional. Usually I don't like open endings but this one wasn't that bad at all! Overall, loved this movie. A masterpiece in my books, 10/10.

When I was looking at that first scene, of the first minute, where the rain was falling into the water, I thought "isn't this a live film, not an animation". Five seconds later, I instantly thought back, "Oh, I forgot! This is Makoto Shinkai here! His art is so beautiful, it looks too real...!!". So many stunning scenery that looked real, and other that were animated but definitely made the mundane into a masterpiece. Makoto Shinkai, forever the master-artist of anime! Just too much to compliment of this work...!!!

Hi, I just want to ask about the relationship between Yukari and the man who she spoke with through the phone. The translation was confusing.
You remember at around what time in the movie did that scene take place?

I guess, it has to be the scene around 16:20. He is most likely her former boyfriend, possibly a fellow teacher, as she is sorry for causing trouble after their break-up and he promises to talk to "the higher-ups" about her leaving.

Yeah definitely that one, it's kinda hint their relationship. Thks for the clarification.

That was just so not good. The plot and characters were terrible, shallow, and messy. I disliked Hanazawa Kana as the 27-year-old Yukino; she sounded much too young. Little to no development on their relationship was shown. The only saving graces were the music and art, which even then cannot make up for the lacking storyline. I didn't come into this movie with high expectations, and I guess I was right. Makoto Shinkai needs to work on his plot ideas, pronto.

Agreeeeeed. Total eye-candy with a disappointingly vapid plot. :/ Makoto needs someone to push his writing into more interesting places because it is annoying to see someone with so much potential falter like this...

Yes, I wish another kind of stories with his art.

In an interview he said his next storyline will be "new".
I hope so :/

Q: Most of your works have consisted of a ‘distant love’ theme. Have you given any thought into trying something a little different such as action or comedy?

A: I don't believe I am suited for comedy so I doubt I will give it a try any time soon. But the last film I did, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, was a sort of adventure themed film and that was personally a challenge. This time The Garden of Words is kind of a love story concept, but every time I create an anime, I try to challenge myself on a new theme and storyline so my next film will certainly be different and new again.

thanks for that :)

Q: On that same note, have you ever considered making an anime series, or are you content with films?

A: I am offered the chance sometimes to work with an anime series, and it is something I feel I should try and be a part of, but at the moment I do not feel like I am ready for it yet and that I have not done enough work. But I am really interested in doing an anime series one day.

I like movie ! It has the usual makoto shinka's VIBES or mood ..
The animation is perfect and also the music I like to focus on the piano background music .. there's no script in that scene just the piano instrumental and you can feel it's building up the scene in the movie .

Although I would want a better ending were they can meet and be an official couple ..
but it's ok this is makoto shinkai so I am expecting for this kind of ending ..

But I hope Makoto shinkai can get off of his COMFORT ZONE which is LOVE STORY WITH Heart warming and somewhat sad endind .. Because almost all of his films are always like that.. I just hope the next film he will produced is DIFFERENT from his previous works .

My score for this movie is 8 out os 10

Amazing visuals as can be expected from Shinkai. The story was a little bit shallow but that's to be expected due to the time. Kana Hanazawa did a wonderful job playing Yukari (and she's one of my most favorite people =)

It didn't hit home emotionally as much as 5cm/sec did but it was still worth the watch. The drama at the end also seemed a little forced but came off okay. I think I would have liked it more if it was a little more fleshed out.
-Nothing can stay unchanged. Even so, can you still keep on loving this place?

The animation is very good and the story is nice. But when it comes to have a love story and there's a huge gap of ages.. I'm very biased. Especially that Yukino is a teacher.

I'll rate this anime as 8.5/10.. :)

Welp, Makoto is amazing!
I just felt the same atmosphere as 5 centimeters per second but with even better Scenarios. The story wasnt as good as byousoku's one but, I still gave a 10/10 because of the design.

He just combined my 3 favorite things: Rain, Romance and Slice of Life, with Makoto Shinkai's magic...

Simply amazing.

As I was enjoying the film I was like "This reminds me of Shinkai. Love the style". Was not surprised when I saw his name plastered on the end credits.

I loved the movie, I felt like their love was genuine and the themes and symbolism throughout the film were amazing. The setpiece were spot on. The rain and animation overall was so good throughout the film.

The embrace scene was probably the most powerful one i have seen in anime whether you like the film or not.

I've come to like Makoto a lot over the years because his works almost always have a hopeful ending even if it seems depressing at first glance.

5c/m is actually my least favorite. Full sad/bittersweet is too cliche.

You conveniently left out the "almost" in "almost always".

I enjoyed this movie greatly. Ignoring the phenomenal art, I thought the story/romance was fairly well done. It wasn't developed as well as it might have been in a 24 episode series... but this was a 45 minute movie. Relative to its length, it was pretty great and definitely worth a watch.

9/10.

you said shinkai movies almost always have a hopeful ending even if it seems depressing at first glance,
the same applies to 5cm

Overall its a 8/10 for me.. they could've elaborate a little more elements from the plot and add a little bit to the character development - making this movie about an hour long. My score would've went up in the 9's or even a 10/10 if the plot was better.

The visuals.. probably the best I've seen in any 2-D work, ever. I was amazed from start to finish. The OST was simple, some piano here and there, but it did the job. The ending was not bad but the "both sobbing crazily into each other arms" was a bit too much. But yeah, the visuals.. I still can't believe the epic art I've witnessed.

There're so many little things that The Garden of Words did poorly, which, if fixed, would benefit the movie greatly in a positive way. The story simply needed to have a bit more uniqueness to it (though the whole teacher-student conflict could be a reference towards Japanese culture taboos - not that other cultures endorse it), and the ending simply needed a better ring to it, perhaps a better scripted part.

As bittersweet as the story is, the movie also lacked emotions. The climax was beautiful however, with every scenery around it worthy. I love rain personally, but this was just awkward in how it was used in the story. Dunno, maybe I find the story a bit too hard to relate to, and that would probably sum up the gist of it. Animation is top-notched, but I question why they couldn't make nature more.. wholesome with the story. I mean, nature was there without any regards to how Yukari's portrayal would look. If there was a scene when nature looks as if one with Yukari, that'd be a much more lively portrayal of nature, or something. The movie simply requires some polishing, otherwise I really liked the concept.

just got my copy of the bluray today

comes with english subtitles, that go ALL the way to the end, and the letter is also translated,
it also comes with the soundtrack.
theres trailers for all of his previous films in HD as per usual on shinkai blurays
theres some interviews, but they arent subbed, and theres some storyboards of the entire movie, but they also arent subbed sadly.

also, doesnt come with his other short film 'Dareka no Manazashi' which i was expecting, but other than that.
looks bloody amazing, as im sure anyone who has seen it can attest to, and the audio is fantastic.

My Bluray also arrived today. Absolutely gorgeous! Beautiful sound! And unlike many here, I totally felt the emotions of the story.

This one had not one but two points where I thought they'd actually get together, OMG! When she ran after him... but that was not to be. And ... and then in the end in the snow, I was so hoping she would be there... but there is hope at the end! More hope than in many of his other works.

It is another masterpiece in my opinion, visually perfect, emotional along his unrequited love theme which I think is what he does best, wonderful soundtrack, Kana Hanazawa's voice work was more serious than usual which I loved. Irino who I enjoyed as Tsubaki in Nazo no Kanojo did a great job here as well.

The sounds of the rain and the trains in 5.1 were so environmental! As someone who has lived in Tokyo and loved it with its gardens, this was a very special movie for me.

Would love a sequel, or even a "One more Time" like novel to come after with even just a little epilogue, a few more letters... but that is what he does so well. He leaves you reaching, wanting, hoping that they get together...

Love the commentary too. Always love seeing Kana and Irino was interesting, Makoto is always great to hear and see.

you speak Japanese?
wish i could understand those interviews, they looked incredibly interesting.
to be honest, i also enjoyed the preview on the disc for all his other works in one 9 minute clip, it really shows you how far hes come from VOADS, and considering every movie he has made has been so great, it was wonderful to see each ones trailer followed by the next.

there was a lot of talk about it for a while, of who would be an adequate replacement for miyazaki once he retires, i personally think shinkai has the ability to fill that role and then some. ghibli movies have their own amazing charm, but shinkai does a different style of movie that i dont think anyone can compare to.

Yes, for me the english subs are a bonus so I can beg my wife to watch it with me but I import stuff without subs all the time and much prefer watching without them as it ruins the visuals and the translations tend to take too many liberties IMO when a more direct translation is often possible.

The interviews are usually easier to understand than the script dialogue as they are speaking normally.

I love his work, though I was not as fond of his previous work, Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Below which seemed like a departure from himself, an attempt to be more of a Ghibli style. I prefer Shinkai Makoto's own style which this was obviously but with some hope at the end so not quite as happy an ending as in The Place Promised in Our Early Days but not as sad as 5cm. It seems I am not alone in preferring this style as Lost Voices sold worse than 5cm and Kotonohononiwa has already outsold it in just the first week.

I think this one has the best animation yet. The full length storyboard version is interesting too.

agreed, visually this was easily the best, but i personally prefer the soft melancholic sort of visuals from 5cm per second, only just though, some of those scenes in KNN were absolutely breathtaking, especially the opening shots and the aerial view of the city.

Yeah, would have been nice if they'd included Dareka in its entirety at the end of the filmography bonus but ... didn't appear at all! Perhaps it will appear on a collection of shorts or something? I will have to look for it in the usual anime film festivals around here.

I am torn between b5cm and knn being my favorite. I will have to watch knn a few more times first. Even kmynb/ppioed... it is tough to choose a favorite! Easy to choose Lost Voices as my least favorite though. I love Hoshi no Koe but the animation style CGI etc. makes it not my favorite.

Hehe, I guess it wouldn't be bad at all to see a remake of "Hoshi no Koe" with updated visuals and maybe an extended plot. Ahh, unfortunately, it is probably not going to happen :)

that would be pretty awesome, but i reckon it would take away from the charm, since he pretty much made that movie by himself.
