it was an okay movie overall. The background history to this is actually quite interesting and its worth reading up on. Makes you appreciate the movie a little more. Ishiguro directed this just after Tytania, after a break of 13 years since his last project. It seems his direction skills got a bit rusty, or it may be that the budget was too low.

Not that the movie was bad, its just hard to believe that this was directed by the same guy who did Lotgh, especially overture to a new war, one of (in my opinion) best directed animated movies I've ever seen.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

The story was fine but too idealistic in a colonial context. I admit that I was a bit disappointed about the chosen point-of-view (two fictional characters whose life is changed by the dam construction) but it added a bit to the movie.

The rest was very flat, bare bones.

Enjoyment: 3.5/5 Glad I learned something.
Score: 5/10
