Uh, is it just me or did this feel like a recap episode? I guess that's why it didn't air the usual time?

Weird.

Edit: I checked the original Chihayafuru series and seems like they also did a recap exactly on episode 16 from Season 1 as well.

I SWEAR TO GOD.... 'RECAP' EPISODES IN ANIME ARE THE MOST USELESS PIECE OF SHIT EVER.... SO USELESS AND ANNOYING T___T

CHIHAYAFURU WHYYYYYY T^T </3 WHYYYY I kind of had a feeling this would happen b/c there was once last season, but UGHH.. WE ARE WASTING TIMEE! T____T </3

If I wanted to recap my memories on this show, I would watch the whole show again.. but MY GOD! 9 episodes left and we still have the individual tournament to go through and I hoped deep down in my heart that we could see Chihaya become Queen! T___T </3

I could PRAYYY MY CRYING HEART OUT for a third season, but its not so often shows get a third season T___T //sobs

Recaps are a waste of time for anyone that is actually following the show regularly. I suppose it serves a purpose for those that might have missed a week or two here and there, but it's still brutal to deal wiAth.

I'm still trying to come to terms with how much losing the main characters do, especially Chihaya. It seems like every time there is a strong opponent or an important match comes along, she finds a way to lose it. Since this is a recap episode let me do some recapping of my own.

Chihaya has lost to the following people, starting with the most recent:
Megumi (National Team Tournament, semi-finals)
Amakasu (Regional Team Tournament, finals)
Yumi
Kanai
Shinobu
Herself (Disqualified during the first National Team Tournament in the very first game)

That's six crushing defeats in extremely important matches. Besides beating Sudo and Ririko, she has lost to every noteworthy opponent she has come into contact with thus far.

To top things off Nashida is like 0-3 now in team play when they needed him most, and hasn't beaten anyone good since Taichi in the 1v1 due to luck. All the while Taichi is like 0-100 in individual matches which makes no sense.

I've never watched a "sports" anime before, but it's boggling to see how often every main character loses. Even Arata drops tons of games but at least he has an excuse. Don't get me wrong here, I really enjoy the show. I'm just perplexed by a lot of the match outcomes.

They win and lose in a believable realistic amount. This isn't a shonen so the character's don't win every time. Chihaya is playing against class A players, these are people who are just as crazy good as her at the VERY LEAST, and many stronger, it makes sense she'd get smashed a lot. She's not a magically amazing player with super powers because of being the lead character, she's a normal human being up against people who are just as skilled and often times moreso.

The Queen on the other hand is amazing at the game. Chihaya is just another class A player - she's literally nobody special and the show has never treated her like a prodigy. She has the raw talent, but not the skill or game smarts that most other class A players have, which is what she's learning and working on even with her losses. The same goes for Taichi - he's not some Karuta prodigy, he's just a guy who is pretty good at it up against other guys who are pretty good to great at it.

Basically; Chihaya, Taichi, and even Arata are just "very good players". The thing is, so is EVERY SINGLE OTHER CLASS A AND B PLAYER. The only person truly above most other players, the only actual prodigy in the show, is the Queen and the guy's equivalent. You're not watching some shitty low-level beginner play against Chihaya, you're seeing two players of the highest caliber go against one another. Of course she loses a lot, she's barely good enough to be considered class A and she's up against people who easily would outrank her if it went any higher. She's like on the lower percentage of skill in the A class. The thing is, she's also got a shit ton of raw talent - and the more experience she gets and techniques she copies, the more that talent starts to show as skill and game knowledge. She's developing realistically instead of just "I'm the best!".

There are countless shonen where the main character loses key battles. The difference between those and this is that ALL of the main characters lose almost every single key match.

If I had to make a rough estimate of the main characters cumulative, individual win/loss ratio since they started high school—excluding Arata since he hasn't been playing—it would probably be somewhere around 1:3. That is even being optimistic about Taichi's placement in his secret tournaments.

I have absolutely no problem with main characters losing. Most of my all-time favorite characters lost some pretty heartbreaking battles, which in turn helped define and push them farther. But watching Chihaya lose every single time she faces someone good is getting old. She beat Sudo who is really competitive with the Queen, then proceeds to drop every single match. Nonsense.

Not enough money? -_- I call BS.

I don't know how studio Madhosue structures itself, but I'm betting they're just cutting corners by not paying their employees what they should, because this thing seemed to be planned well in advance. It costs money to even have a certain number of episodes they can air, which they have to pay, so I wouldn't be surprised if the reason why we get a crappy recap is because the people higher up can pocket more money while the people doing the actual work get paid in peanuts, thus not paid to draw/animate newer content around this time.

No one cares about how the female porker and the skeleton hooked up.

I'm having my doubts they will even cover all of the individual tournament this season.

But at the same time, I think we should be grateful that a season 2 was made so quickly, so I won't complain more.

Uggh, I was totally looking forward to this week's Chihayafuru. Instead of having this useless recap ep, I would have preferred that they didn't bother to air anything this week at all. That way I wouldn't have to waste my time on downloading a useless episode and it wouldn't have set me up for such disappointment in having my hopes up for some new Chihayafuru.

I watched the first 2 mins, realized it was a recap and just didn't bother to watch the rest.

Just wondering, yeah, they are at the climax but with all that happnes every episode a recap is needed to remember all that has happened, and i had a great time with all he quirks, jokes and intense parts of the series.
Just my idea as a fan of the series (and the manga)

It is the start of Golden Week so a bunch of shows may have recaps. Not sure Hetalia had an episode yesterday at all.

The start was quite funny at least! Poor Kanade and her three eyelashes, so funny the boys reaction when she had fake ones on! Poor Sumire's main contribution to the show so far, mascara...

Yes, the match is long over in the manga. I do wonder though, how far they will get as the match is over with book 15. 5 more books after that and we could get pretty far into them depending on how many episodes they take for the finals.

Is the Chihayafuru manga racing with the anime counterpart? It seems to me the only reason to make a recap episode (or several) is to give the manga a week or two to get back in the lead. One piece has a lot of filler and recap episodes, and those exist to give the manga time to get ahead a bit.

Other than that, there is no reason to make a recap episode. If they're low on budget and can't afford to make one more episode (-_-), then they should have set the episode count to 24 instead of 25. If I knew nothing about Chihayafuru, watching this recap episode would not tell me jack about the show, nor would it make me wish to watch episode 17. And if I missed like one week of the show, I'd read a summary of it online (which would be much more informative than this haphazard recap episode).

I think I just wrote this a few replies up but anyways... We are at the end of volume 14 of the manga. Volumes 15-20 are already out. So the manga is already far ahead and I would be surprised if they do 6 books in 9 episodes. Well, they could but the nationals team battle takes up book 15 and I'll be surprised if they just do one episode on that given that the previous match took more. Then individuals...

So as I wrote above I wonder if this was a Golden Week holiday filler recap episode.
