I've been thinking about how Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are much more popular here in North America, and I'm curious about the shows which are more popular in Japan for whatever reasons. Anyone know?

Detective Conan, Sazae-San, One Piece, Naruto Shippuden, Toriko and Pokemon. I have a few Japanese friends (they live in japan) and they say that they watch these shows around dinner time.

I know the One Piece manga is insanely popular in Japan. I think it's volumes sell as much as the total of the next 5 or 6 combined.

I don't know anything else though.

The easiest pick One Piece.

In general excessively moe series.

I agree with MajinSaga, it it sad, more easily seen by people like me that have known and been exposed to anime since forever and we were and are able to easily see the changes.

Some moe is fine thou, Railgun, Suisei no Gargantia, or similar in which the series don't run too excessively and/or exclusively over moe.

The endless "if you don't like it so sorry" while true you don't need to act like little kids, its true, but that does not mean those of us that don't like it will shut up, dirty gaijin or not.

Sigh, I was more tolerant toward moe until I got to know directly many moe fans here in this very forum.

Anyway, for the question of this thread, not better example that One Piece, of course there are many more, Ranma was more popular overseas while sister anime Yawara was more more popular in Japan.

Ookiku Furikabute (Big Windup) flopped in the US, in Japan was very well received.

I remember seeing some poll in a Crunchyroll article that ranked the new spring anime in terms of popularity in Japan. Looks like Attack on Titan, Oreimo, Red Data Girl, Devil Survivor 2, and A certain scientific railgun S took the top 5.

Also, stuff like K-on, One Piece, and Sword Art Online are very popular.

You forgot Shin-chan.

This.
And people starting argument about moe should shut up and think again before they post. Those anime are more popular with otaku than the stuff that is popular in Western circles. Don't lump everything together.

Pretty sure Ghost in the Shell is a big deal in Japan and I believe Cowboy Bebop is liked a fair amount though maybe not as much as it is in the West. But I agree, it's a shame creativity and originality are shoved aside for stuff that sells.

On topic, I know for certain Evangelion is way bigger there than in the West, I mean they make products out of it like crazy.

Shaving just got more kawaii.

Of course it is. I'm not obsessing over underage girls shouting annoying shit in high pitched voices.

I don't have statistics, but I've always thought GiTS was pretty big in Japan? I mean something that has so many sequels/spin offs has to have some sort of popularity. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Guys, if an anime wins lots of award in Japan, can it be considered as popular ?

Well I would think so. It's not airing so we can't find the ratings but it does have a lot of movies and spin offs with that new one airing this year or whatever.

Possibly, but you could also consider the popular anime as the ones with the highest ratings. Which are usually the family oriented anime.

Nah, Kuraiiya is the opposite in that he fanboys rather then hates on other anime.

I'm also at a loss, I thought Ghost in the Shell was pretty beloved in Japan as well.

Then, FMA brotherhood is a confirm win lol. Both manga and anime.

And One piece , just the manga, the anime didnt win much compared to the manga.

Eureka seven anime won tons of awards in japan too.

I love these guys who come to the forums with less than a dozen completed anime on their list and profess their hatred for certain genres. It's incredibly hard to take them seriously, especially when they start calling people stupid, strictly due to how ironic it all is.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

Those kind of people show up every once in a while.

Judging from prior examples of this guy, it's evident that there's no use trying to reason with them, I don't even try to respond properly to them anymore.

They'll usually just make more and more threads about "moe is killing the industry", "Why is older anime better" or in some cases "Anime fans are stupid."

Funny thing is that a lot of them don't even watch the supposed "moe-shit" before passing judgment.

You don't need to eat shit to know it tastes bad.

And I have had the misfortune of watching such trash.

Name them.

btw, is this trash?

Come on, tell me how you don't have to watch them to know what they are.
Tell me you can judge it by it's cover.

Akiba is currently at GuP land here lately. It is been this way since November. The town is filled with Tamiya tank plastic model kits and Akiyama daki. I hope the trend will die already because I'm so sick of those military wota all over the place. They're making the town dangerous looking. Casual fans are intrigued with LoveLive, that demon king who works at Mcdonalds and those Titans for some reason.

If you really want to know, then you can check DVD-sales and TV-ratings. I think Gundam SEED was the most popular one in recent history and the usual TV-shows like One Piece, Conan, Shin-chan and Precure blow out otaku themed garbage out of the water.

Even if they get crap ratings, it has been shown that moe shows usually get higher DVD/BD sales.
I mean just look at the great sales of Girls Und Panzer.

sorry does it out sell gundam no that what i comapre year on year sales to

yes i said year on Year not just one run

only EVA comes close Yaer on year to Gundam

I'm not saying that moe outsells everything. Even though Gundam may sell a lot more in total compared to moe, moe anime still sells quite a bit.
Which would make the Japanese a fan of the moe culture.

im not disputing Moe sell well but in my eyes an anime needs to both sell well and get godd tv ratings [ if its a tv anime ] to be Called a sucess
the way that this web site hangs to home unit sales its like saying all anime should be OVA

TV anime Exists Tv Ratings matter example
most tv anime in the top 10 stay one air cuase of Tv ratings not DVD sales

I admit you do bring up a good point. Though if I may ask, why does moe not get good TV ratings but really well DVD/BD sales?
